The heart of a fuel cell is the catalyst which accelerates the hydrogen splitting process. Presently, the best catalyst available is Platinum, which is a very costly material. There is a lot of research happening to find new catalyst for fuel cells, but we are still to find a replacement to platinum. Secondly the membrane (proton exchange membrane) is also necessary for the fuel cell to work. The membranes we use today are not the most efficient ones and are made up of materials that degrade too soon. Again research to find better PEM is on. Thirdly, the issue of storage of hydrogen.
