I received a couple of follow up questions on the topic of ERP and Companies Success,   as well as a question regarding whether Best of breed is about to make a comeback, in particular inside the core ERP domain. So instead of getting deeper in talkback land, I figured to write about this interview which I came across while reading a magazine. This interview with E R Batliwala, CIO of Tata power gives a lot of incite on Tata powers success mantra with ERP application……. I was also told that my posts are too long to read, so I will try to go shorter……….   There is no doubt that ERP, which was a key differentiator for companies 10 years ago has become more context for some of the companies to...

As an aviation buff, I was interested to learn more about Boeing. But when i came across this article, I found myself sucked into some excellent reading about Boeing..I can't help but can think about that my choice of putting boeing as the best is a right decision.  Boeing has pulled off a turnaround in the past five years. The company has streamlined production, bought a profitable military-aircraft business and clarified its famously unreadable accounting statements. If we go by the news then 5 years back boeing was in immense trouble with having to close  two of their production lines to save operation cost. But now the scenario has completely changed.  The company’s military-aircraft bu...

It’s no secret that an ERP implementation gone wrong can lead to serious problems for any business. Cost overruns, an inability to meet client requirements and, in the worst case, - damage to client relationships, are just some of the negative side effects caused by a poorly deployed ERP system. I’ve seen several companies invest significant resources in various ERP implementations that have failed to takeoff. One of the fundamental reasons for this that I see time and again is a lack of user acceptance. For the most part, the problem isn’t the ERP software itself the potentially leading cause of a failed implementation is limited user adoption – the failure to win over the people tasked wi...

SAP ERP - The Great Equalizer Before introduction of advertisement in the market unusual products did not find its way to the market. A person might see a product carried out by the foreigner and he wants to inquire the origin of the maker to order a similar product. But he could not contact the particular person because of lack of resources. so it was found that there is a need for a high end technology which blances the supplier consumer relationship. Finally the question raised was, what did we do without them? The question is no longer, where can I get the information I need? The question is now, what do I do with all the information I have? The article liked gives a solution to this pr...

Software's Future: Melding the Web and the Desktop While desktop software still dominates, the web has given rise to a new breed of application -- exemplified by products like Google Docs, the company's online word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software Salesforce.com's enterprise sales-support products -- that runs within a web browser. and many more........... These webtop applications use the local computer only to run the web browser and a few basic extensions (like Adobe's Flash Player) and use the processing power and storage of banks of computers accessed remotely over the Internet. But as this drive toward hybrid desktop/webtop software illustrates, there are limits to bot...

If your small business does not have a web site, you are probably losing more customers than you realize. And if your small business has a web site that was designed by 'a friend' you may be doing more harm than good to the reputation of your company. A well-designed small business web site should: look good, be easy to navigate, and be designed to be easily found in the search engines. To create an effective web presence requires a solutions-based approach with clear ideas about what you want to accomplish and who the audience is you are targeting. The right elements have to be present; a well orchestrated website design with cohesive branding solid technical acumen clearly defined objecti...

Like American Century, many companies today are looking to create competitive advantages by analyzing their business metrics. To support this mission, organizations are investing millions in implementing ERP solutions that often include reporting and analytical tools. In fact, a recent TDWI survey reported that 45 percent of the companies who deployed an ERP solution plan to use in-house resources to build an OLAP system and 56 percent plan on using the internal reporting and analytical tools provided in the solution. Then, do companies such as American Century really need a data warehouse tool set? The answer is yes—despite some common misconceptions such as those listed below... Informati...

I think Indians in general are very patriotic and passionate of being Indians and they are more emotional towards that compared to other countries in the world. That kind of culture has been in existent for so many centuries. I reckon this passionate and high commitment (like the Japanese had just after World War 2 until the late nineties) is a clear competitive advantage that the Indian leaders are making use of along with the high level economic policy changes. This kind of thirst for development for a country as a whole with the top level support and dedication rises the Indian business. Other than that I think there is no significant difference in the leadership style which could drive ...

One of the best ways to get exposure and experience is to relocate to a country. You can attend HR conferences or association/news articles initially to get started. But, I strongly encourage on-the-ground experience. In the current market...
