I bet everyone from young to old seems to be into social networking these days, most prominently facebook for that matter. Wouldn't deem or categorize something called Facebook as mortal sin or drop in employee output as the stimulus states, but would look at it as more of a refreshment or a break away from mundane duty or regular work. Am quite sure most organizations have other means of measuring employee inefficiency rather than poor old Zuckerbeg bearing the brunt. Wonder why would most organizations both big and small use facebook as an advertising medium these days ???

Certain amount of personal work during office hours cannot be avoided. One takes time off to go to the bank or hospital or attend to things that compulsorily requuire personal presense. However, attending things such as personal email and personal web based activity like social networking is unethical during office hours when you are contracted legally to attend to the organization's work. Why not do office work during office hours. That way you can do personal work during your time instead of the other way around. Not much sense in looking at social networking between 8am and 5pm only to sit in the office after 5pm to do office work!!! Companies should firewall such sites.

I support because the social media being very addictive and those business which are working on a 9 to 5 model might get the valuable work hours lost, hence these sites if not relevant to the business directly should definitely be out of picture.

I think Organizations should stop this right now, even in my workplace people will be using their social networking accounts all the time, its been very difficult to handle my team members, even after warning them for so many times they are doing the same, may be lately social networking is becoming very addictive and then can't stay out of it and concentrate on one thing, and if asked they'll say just to relax for a while we use them and in a country like India where people work in the first place very less and now to add to the woes social networking sites like facebook and others are hampering productivity like anything.

Don't blame FB. If you block it, then people find some another thing for TP. No one can work continuously so there should be some entertainment at work place also & if it is in the form of social websites then please accept it. & fix the time limit for that.

As a networking site, FB has become a landmark in cyberspace. It involves lots of information posted by many organizations. Thus employees pouring through FB should not be curbed but rather taken as a possible source for information - people from Purchase, HR, Marketing etc. benefit a great deal from FB. Rather they should also focus on any social networking site.

IN THAT CASE WHAT WOULD YOU DO MR KANDADAI - YOU ARE ALL OVER TOO STEP THE WHOLE DAY IN ALMOST ALL DEBATES/IDEATES ETC, BE IT 9 TO 5 OR 5 TO 9. WE MUST GENUINELY PREACH WHAT WE PRACTICE. SORRY IF I AM BEING IMPOLITE, BUT THE TRUTH IS ONE CANNOT AVOID PEEPING INTO SUCH SITES EVEN IN OFFICE AND THE TRUTH IS KNOWN TO ALL POLICY MAKERS,WHISTLE BLOWERS. CERTAIN AMOUNT OF LIBERTY IS HEALTHY AND PRODUCTIVE.

If your team members would rather spend time on FB than in project work, it means that project work has become less appealing. Change is called for either in leadership or in management style. If they didn't have FB, they would be taking coffee breaks.

I do not see why the organizations should worry, because the time that used to get spent in coffee breaks is now being spent online. Employees are human beings, not machines. We cannot measure productivity like this :"Facebook cost us $ 4 billion annually" and so on. Can anyone measure how much it has saved for the organizations, by providing the employees a suitable platform for self expression , thereby increasing their work efficiency ? The corporate world will continue to be ruled by rogues who can count losses and not the gains. They do not like the employees to be happy.

It must be surprising for many who see me support both the ideas. as I put my thoughts on the other side of it, It is definitely great medium for many like me as a tool to reach and explore the great talent. The so called global village is shrinking by the day as you catch up with some one remote part of Argentina or even Vietnam to clinch a business deal, had this media is not turned out to be an evolution. The need should be to identify where it is required and where it is not and How much. The organizational policy should define well enough for the benefit of all. If it is not relevant to the business and just a mere waste of time, A big "NO" to this medium in the office premises. Those who feel to be connected on the Social media can do so in their personal / Leisure time.

Dear Darshana, Don,t you think that they are learning something new being on social networking sites. So many times these contacts lead to business contacts enhancing the business for the organisation, we need to evolve ways to derive benefits from these sites these are new challenges and opportunities simultaneously, so instead of stopping it altogether we should look at other ways to live with it, because banning it only boomerang and employees will adopt unethical ways to connect.

but no one cares about the hours they spend busting their heads in the cabin....so in my opinion...facebook surfing , that too for an hour for some social indulgence which is everyone's necessity , is nothing comparable to the 8-12 hours of work they devote for services they are offering

I don't think there is any problem here, just people relax while they are connecting with their friends on social networking sites, and I have to say that it is evolution of technology and humans using these technologies making to connect with people all over the world and sharing something which is relevant according to them, and today we can't take people out of these social networking habit, it is very difficult, it is how they have started living, they depend on these sites a lot for many things. So, organizations need to understand these things and work something around it than banning it altogether which will have an impact in due course of time...
