I think 3G is better It offers downloads of up to 70 Mbps as compared to the 15 Mbps that 3G provides. Mobile WiMax offers download speeds of around 20 Mbps.

I THINK THE FIXED VERSION 802.16d had matured completely now,and very very proven solutions exits for the same.

Mobile wimax 802.16e is still to become completely stable and deployed extensively.

But i definitely think it is better especially when i comes to broadband and telecom backhaul applications.

In fact Wimax is 3.5 G wireless technology as far as i know.

It all depends on wimax leaders like  intel and their chipsets and how aggressively they push it forwad....

I agree with rehman that wimax is better than 3G because a home WiMAX network connection is no different than a current WiFi connection, only faster and operable over larger distances. With  Intel integrating WiMax chipsets into notebook PCs next year, and handheld PC and mobile phone makers expecting to follow suit, people will simply upgrade to WiMAX very easily.  In addition, unless the mobile operators drastically reduce the cost of 3G, WiMAX will blow it out of the water.

My personal opinion is that WiMAX (or some equivalent, such as Korea's WiBro)  will become the main carrier of large data files, with 3G only being used when the user is outside of a WiMAX hotspot.

Please read my posting on '3g has Limitations' else where in this space.  With high data rate multi-media services and internet data telephony, the distinguishing factors between Mobile and Fixed networks will reduce to the type of end link.

In other words the wireless portion will become smaller and smaller reducing to a low reach end link,  leaving the network topology predominantly wired.  Therefore, the coverage cpability and features of the last link become the critical factors.

Unwired local network with Limited Mobility that can be provided with FTTH and WiMax will be the ideal network topology for Multi-media business in wired network.

3G based on W-CDMA is good technology for high data rate  multi-media service in Mobile network. However, the network will be prohibitively expensive to support and sustain  a viable multi-media data business over Mobile network.

The better option will be to develop and adopt identical network topology for both Wired and Wireless multi media business as mentioned above, using OF in back bone and WiMax in the last mile / end link.

It is a fast moving technology.  In India, it is being adopted even as it is simultaneously being implemented in advanced countries like the US, Japan and Korea.

WiMax is predominantly used for fixed services, but it is moving over to mobile.

I think Wimax is better as it makes huge sense for companies as it enables them to provide cheaper mobile internet and broadband services, in turn, increasing the internet penetration.
