IT IS BENEFICIAL BECAUSE IT CAN BE USED TO IDENTIFY ANY CITIZEN ANYWHERE IN INDIA OR EVEN IN THE WORLD ON THE BASIS OF THIS UID.

It is good as identification proof.. But it is not compulsory!! If everyone does not have one then how can it be useful.. Plus the procedure is not clear.. People who had participated in Nov 2010 camp to get UID still so not have one. How can it benefit then!!

Today if you go for getting any certificates such as Income Certificates, Caste certificates.... the first and only required document which is put on the notice board of the office is AADHAAR UID... if people dont have that they are required to give minimum 2 to 3 documents such as id proof, address proof, affidavit etc....

It is good bcoz we people are require to provide identity proof for many of things like loan approval; taking any new telephone connection and so on...for which it is not necessary that everyone will be having the identity proof specially on rural areas...With the launch of UID we all will be having a common and Universal ID proff to be used in India...

i must first thank arti gupta for referring this to me. since we don't fully understand the concept, we tend to feel that this is another wasteful exercise. firstly, the AADHAAR number is the "foundation" - it is for the user to make use of the database - and let me assure you people that the uses it can be put to are limited by our imagintion only. next is the issue of its not being compulsory. today that may be true - but lets say that in future you could get your sim cards, passports, driving licenses, ration cards, etc etc only if you had an UID number !! add to this the fact that your voter id would be linked to your UID no and you would need it to open bank accounts !!! but let me also put it this way - in future, if you have an aadhaar no - YOU MAY NEED NO OTHER DOCUMENT (& NIL self attested PHOTOCOPIES) for getting sim cards, bank accounts etc etc.

may i inform this learned gathering that the world is here studying this very brave UNIQUE effort because they would like to replicate our efforts in their own countries. this is likely to be ten times larger than the largest biometric database anywhere in the world.

in my own small way i do a little for the AADHAAR project myself, and felt i need to contribute. i may be able to help clarify some of the queries which are welcome.

It is a good one like the Social Security Number in US. This helps us in many ways and will be terror to terrorists.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique number which the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will issue for all residents. The number will be stored in a centralised database and linked to the basic demographics and biometric information – photograph, ten fingerprints and iris

Dear Brigadier Chadha,

Thanks for your appreciation. I am in full support behind the UID due to its immense utility, but totally against the move of creating a hugely staffed organization of the UID AUTHORITY without slashing even a single post out of the existing departments of Census or the Election Commission. Naturally such an organization would spend hundreds of crores of revenue, as taxpayers money, on yearly basis on its establishments and infrastructure on the pretext of UID functions. Needless to mention all the basic data of the citizens of India is always ready with the Government through the Department of Census, the Election Commission of India, and the Departments of Civil/Food Supplies/ public distribution of the States concerned. NATURALLY, there will be clear and unnecessary duplication or triplication of work with all such departments, besides the organization of the UID. There work may also be increased by unnecessary frequent intervention by the UID AUTHORITY in the functioning of those departments to call for several types of information from them also.

In fact creation of such type of new posts with vast powers is usually at the behest of the top bureaucrats at the verge of retirement, keeping in mind their own retirements and to grab the opportunity to continue enjoying power and facilities, besides keeping with them their own touts, even after their superannuation. People with vast powers usually find themselves worthless after they are superannuated and can't resist regaining power by using any trick.

They prepare such a foolproof proposal that their bureaucrat brethren also see their own advantage in getting approved such proposals when they foresee more promotional opportunities for them through the proposed organization when they are stagnated at certain position in their own organization. So, birds of a feather try to flock together. For the vested interests, this is a very foolproof and safe way of indirect corruption without attracting even the sligtest attention of public or media.

Creating more and more authorities just indicates that the Ministries and the Departments of the Government are just getting rid of their genuine duties and responsibilities by creating additional posts to reappoint their retired henchmen in the name of authorities and still getting their salaries without doing any job in the existing ministries and the departments. Posting of Nandan Nilekani at the initial stage is just an eyewash not to attract criticism of the public and media. Thereafter the post is likely to be reserved only for the retired touts of the politicians, as is hapening with the post of the Telecome Authority of India at present through which only retired CMDs of the MTNL or the BSNL, responsible for leading the PSUs more towards bankruptsy, find an easy route of extention of their service for about 5 years even after their date of superannuation, even after handling their earlier jobs inefficiently.

The question arises, what for the ministries and departments of the Government of India exist if an army of authorities are to be created in addition just to create more burden of heavy expenditure for the new organizations of such authorities on the pockets of the tax-payers?

If the Ministry of Home desires to create the Unique Identification Authority of India, what uniqueness of the function it sees that it cannot do its own duties and responsibilities, when Census Authorities have collected and stored complete data of the members of each of the families of India, which it can use for the purpose of identification of the residents of India?

A question can arise, can, in that case, the Census Department not be delegated the functions of the Identification Authority, and why such a new authority on the heads of the Indian public?

dear mr dhingra sir, value your observations. i am really not competent to comment on the ways of governance - and which way the project will go in future. my comments, primarily regarding the usefulness, were to suggest that there is tremendous scope if we were to decide to benefit from the project. it may actually be a case wherein a lot of deadwood can be removed if we have the will to do so. how much we will derive is always questionable. my confidence flows out of the fact that i have personally seen some of our weaker sections benefitted. with warm regards, sunil

Dear Brigadier Chadha,

While I thank you for referring the post to me and your clarifications posted here. Of course, your views are appreciable. BUT, you would like to agree that your views are about the unique indenty only, NOT on the AUTHORITY that is likely to create a very heavy burden of expenditure of permanent nature on the pockets of the taxpayers, while the job of identification can well be delegated to one of the authorities posted in the Census Departments of India, the work of which remains ngligible when no elections are there in the country.

So, it is not understood, why the Government of India is bent upon creating Authorities after Authorities? Can the Government of India assure that the post would necessarily go to the IT experts on merit basis and that too from open market, even after the tenure of Mr. Nilekani, and would never go to the retired henchmen of the politicians in future?

Instead of having 5-8 cards such as Pan, DL, Voter Id, Address Proof, Aadhaar, Ration etc. it would be better if we come up with an UNIVERSAL ID CARD which could be updated based on the requirement of a citizen
On a whole Qualification is meant for the entry/eligibility for the placement but There is Something called "Personality & Skill" which is highly required in the corporate world. The same would be preferred to maintain the position in a company.
