Flying is an extreme luxury. So my first question is: Does such a luxury have to be run by the government? I don't think so. The private sector is doing it very well. The government should just take care of the ministry and the airports - for security and other issues. Can you imagine software engineers going on a strike? If they do not like the working conditions at an organization, they leave and go to another. Pretty soon, the org. understands that it will lose talent and takes measures to improve working conditions. If it doesn't, they WON'T be competitive. If the pilots do not like Air India, they can leave, right? Are they jailed there? If they are not qualified or they cannot get jobs at private airlines, well, they should be grateful that they have a job and they should adjust with the working conditions. Yes, pilots earn a lot of money because they risk their lives. So do the soldiers of our Armed Forces. The pilots risk their lives (and those of the passengers) for their own pockets and for the glamour of the job. OUR SOLDIERS RISK THEIR LIVES FOR THE SECURITY OF OUR COUNTRY. DO OUR SOLDIERS GET PAID LIKE THE PILOTS? Does that mean that our soldiers should go on strike now? Take a little time to imagine such a situation.

It is difficult to disagree with the striking commercial pilots' demands. The Central Conciliation Machinery has failed to defuse the crisis and save the situation. It lacks fire fighting skill to move with speed to administer the required life saving medicine inspite of two notices showing the symptom and shape of things to come had been brought to their notice. Now the I.D.(Ammendment) Act,2010 has empowered them to act as Conciliation Officer in respect of all the Navaratna industries which includes public sector steel plants under the SAIL,NALCO & NTPC.Will they save these money spinning central units in the event of such strike? I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT ALL EMPLOYERS THINK ABOUT THEIR INCOME IN NETT THE AI PILOTS ARE ASKING FOR MORE MONEY THAN THE FOREIGN PILOTS SO IF I AM THE EMPLOYER DEFINITELY I WOULD THINK ABOUT THE LOSS AND PROFIT.WELL FINE IF THE AI PILOTS CONTINUE THEIR STRIKE LET THEM THEY SHALL BE REPLACED BY THE FOREIGN PILOTS AT A MUCH CHEAPER RATE

we understand that there is some genuine demand but strike is not a right solution. they should follow Japan style of non-cooperation. Japanies simply used to tied one black strip on their hand to protest but does not stop working. and we all know this type of attitude makes them distinct from other and make positive/ constructive strike. which is benificial for both.

Infact AI Pilots demands are genuine when compared to Pilots of other airways pilots.Their life is at the edge of death and life. But It is not the way to stop the entire productivity of India by wasting so many hours. They should resolve their grievances through some amicable solution through Negotiations with the govt.

It is a high time to privatise our national carrier, which will bring in decipline among the management and emlpoyees.Govt is continuesly pumping tax payers money to protect this airline.Inspite of injucting so much of money they are still not able to turn around. They were the number one carrier in the world with lucrative route which used to give them lot of revenue. But few babu's sold these lucrative route to other global carrier for free of cost and made guge money as bribe... This is one more scam which can be aaded into the great UPA regim...

Of course it is embarrassing, but it is necessity for this world. It is not reflects the weak governance, but it shows the right to work and right to claim. In Tamilnadu, we can get rice fr Rs.1 Rupee but for making a Sambar, we have to invest Rs.50. That is all Politics, but our Indian black money overflows the Swiss bank. Don't blame on others, you face your area Politicians with your available strength.

This is as a result of weak governance. I feel pity for the Government they are not in a position to handle there own house how can they handle the strike? It is India after all. You can buy Tiger Milk by paying money. God save the Country.

Of course this is embarassing but given the whole picture we should'nt be surprised. These Management shuffles, employee apathy and constant strikes have reduced our national airlines to a pitiful shadow of what it's potential actually is. Each side (management & employees) has enough of grievances to placate the other. Unless there is a definute will to break this deadlock - we will have to endure more of this

In India employees go on strike for getting their demands accepted by their management. The Managements are not proactive here. They try to watch and see the impact and reacts later on once the situation going out of their hands. People are the ultimate sufferers, nobody cares him ofcourse. The culture of striking for getting their demands is not a correct practice in a developing country like India. I am against strikes though I am a Govt. employee. People are the ultimate bosses in a democracy, u cant put your master to troubles. But the position of a master in Indian democracy is so weak. His representatives and his servants teaches him a lesson every time. So sad.

I think govt. should held responsible for this conflict, as pilot / co-pilot/ & other crew members have every right to fight for their payment hike. & on the other hand these people should also consider the problem of the travellers/ customers. Thanks for referral, Kavitha.

The debate is getting much larger than we imagined. Why this state of affairs? The management has failed to handle the situation. The pilots would have given notices as per the norms in advance, before getting on to the striking mode! Where the Management silent then? The Management waited till the extreme to happen? They thought once the passengers are troubled, the pilots would be viewed as villains, and the matter will attract public ire, and the status quo would be maintained. Whatever said and done, this kind of strike should be avoided. For their internal issues, passengers should not be troubled like this!

Kavitha ji, Who should have understanding with whom is the first question. It was not the pilots decision to merge two airlines while the people who design-planned the merger are not answerable to anyone. Most of these people can order an aircraft from A,B,C beneficiary if they ever want to travel so the interruption is for people who are never interested in making anything except making more money their subject while the worst misery is for those who worked hard to earn it and have to continually suffer at others whims. At best it is the last classes money going down the drain thanks to the self proclaimed responsible " ENTRUSTEES". Ours can be termed a country where even a single individual can take the entire country for a ride to benefit a select few.

I dont think so, the employees are right in their way, they had given 2 notices prior to going on stike. Their demand is also justifyable. When they are doing the same work then why should there be disparity in salary structure for Indian pilots and foreign pilots. Infact the management of Air India including the Civil Aviation Minister should be ashamed for what they have done to the airline. They have conned it by giving away all the lucarative routes to the private guys and kept the left overs for AI. Most of this happened in the past 4-5 years. God knows how much bribe has exchanged hands. When they were looting AI by free flights to the kith and kin of VIPs and when they were giving away lucarative routes to other players no one bothered about the loss to the company exchequere, only when its employees demand pay on parity they talk about the additional expense ontheir Balance Sheets.
