Telecom major Bharti Airtel yesterday launched ‘Airtel Talkies’, for offering exclusive content from upcoming movie releases to its subscribers which brings original movie content, dialogues, storyline and song clips before the release of the movie, Airtel said in a statement. Airtel users can subscribe to Airtel Talkies at Rs 30 per month for four movies with 30 days validity, or Rs 10 per week for one movie with seven days validity.

The format of cinema on Airtel Talkies comprises a 15-minute narrative, where songs and dialogues are connected together by a ‘Sutradhar’ to provide a complete experience of the movie. Airtel Talkies would offer both upcoming releases and all-time classic movies in five languages — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

So users, Will this help in increasing the business of the movie?

I think this move will definitely increase movie content on the move for many people as many find it hard to find time to watch TV at home, so this is a right move from telecom network providers since it will create interests among the viewers by the snaps and trailer of the movie and give the viewers, a good idea of what the movie is all about. This will help the viewers to decide whether they would like to go for the movie or not & certainly will increase in generating more business for the movie..

I guess the question I would ask is:

"What when you are watching this amazing film that you had missed and you find your boss behind your shoulders watching you watching the film...what would you think would be the end of this scene?"

Catastrophe!... correct

All these VAs is fine but to what extent would they be successful and with what audience is my question. If they are targetting it at the youth who is yet studying then it makes a lot of sense. But if they have included the yuppy exec from IT, Call Centre or even your other verticals, I find it a little farfetched in terms of usage and its allowance in office premises!!

I agee with you, but hope that this will not result in further reduced productivity of mobile users. Just think when will they have time to hear to the cinedialogues or view trailers in mobiles. Allrady, people are becoming sick of unwanted calls and SMS from telemarketing people. While it is usefull for selecting the movies and also enjoying new songs, music and good dialogues some times, How many people will go for it and how many will get disturbed by it and how much productiivity improvement or loss will be there on account of it. Many of our advertising methods are not good for the country as well as for the companies. Take for example: how much money India Today/ Readers Digest spends on printed matter, postage , emails, follow up phone calls etc for advertising their sales through offers, lottery to make 4 to 5 people rich. probaly 7 out of 10 through the materials straight to the garbage bin and get disturbed suffer productivity loss and healthe problems because of unwanted diturbance. Of course such schemes are generating employment for quite a few. That is ofciurse and additional benifit and thus distributes money to the need even though it doesnot generate an essential product or service of daily life. Government is thus saved of providing unemployment allowance (thers is no suvh scheme in india at present) to the unemplyed people and therefore such things should be encouraged till such time there is sufficient productive employment opportunity becomes available in this country.

In an industry with nearly 500 million subscribers and every service provider extending similar benefits, plus a price war that does not seem to have an end, what do you differentiate your offering on? Movies on demand, songs on demand, product reviews on demand, navigation on demand ... one is likely to see more and more of these. Will it increase business? It is hard to tell. When you provide snippets from a movie, it is a double-edged sword. It may work or it may fail. Either way, word is likely to spread like wild fire to friends and relatives. Hence there is an element of risk built into the model. If it succeeds, it may exceed all expectations. If it fails, the producer may start wondering why it was made available in the first place.

I agree with namrata, this product is going to bring more business to movies. Most of the people in urban centers are so busy with work that they find time to watch TV and specifically certain programs which provide details of a movie after it is released. Rather this product will help in decision making process of the consumer. Watch this space closely because after sometime, movies may be simultaneously released on DTH along with theatres so as to capture maximum revenue within first two weeks of movie release.

How many of us watch movies on mobile? hardly any? Movies are better enjoyed in Multiplexes and televisions...I guess this would fall flat on its face..Where is the market research report of movie viewers on mobiles...?Bharti Airtel...needs to be proactive not optimist

Hey Namrata. Good initiation and refer too. "Airtel Talkies" is certainly a new, active, customer-oriented, market friendly concept initiated by Bharti but movies to gain business out of this looks to be a great NO. This would be just another platform thru which the movies would be promoted, and nothing more than that. Surely, there's a winner in the whole episode and that's Bharti all the way. To earn from VAS has been the call most telecom players have been taking and this is just an addition to their business plan.

I think movies are already getting a lot of exposure through promos on TV, the internet...appearances on talk shows/ reality shows, online n sms contests etc...so i don't know how much more these promos on mobile fones are going to contribute to the movie's business...a movie's performance eventually depends on how good it is..and promos are only meant to attract the intial audience...who i guess will go with or without the mobile promo..
