Since Google first introduced Gmail back in 2004, it's regularly updated the web-based email service with new features: increased storage space, a web-based mobile app, Google Chat and numerous interface tweaks among them. To catch up, Microsoft introduced the Windows Live Hotmail "Wave 4" update  last May, and Yahoo promises a significant Yahoo Mail update is in the works, too. Now, it's Aol's turn.

Aol's President of Consumer Applications, the company lost its way not just with email. But after more than a year in development AOL is ready to take the lid off "Project Phoenix," which launches today. Will AOL be able to resurrect their Email??

Despite having helped introduce email to the masses in the 1990s remember when having that @aol.com domain seemed downright default mail?  AOL now has a meager 30.8 million email users, at least compared with Microsoft (361 million global users), Yahoo (273 million), and Google  (193 million). And now even Facebook coming with emailing options I think its all too late for AOL to resurrect their email strategy with Project phoenix...

There could be a good possibility for AOL to make a comeback but they'll have to be even better than the others. They'll have to be very innovative and creative to make a successful comeback and be bigger than the others. It will take alot for AOL to get ahead or even compete.

I will not say AOL is not completely dead here. They were the foremost in this email technology somehow they lost their way with Hotmail and Yahoomail and gmail and now even Facebook is entering the scene, so people know the importance of email, and AOL is heading in the right direction resurrecting their email with project phoenix, and change is good. So, it will help to gain more user base for their email.

It may be difficult for AOL to build its customer base back to its previous levels. This is on account of the well entrenched customer base of the other competitors like Gmail, yahoo, hotmail.....

The full AOL Project Phoenix release will come next year, but at the moment it is in a limited beta phase. It appears to look a lot like Gmail's interface, with a few extra bells and whistles. There's a "quick bar" at the top for sending short e-mails, instant messages (which pop up in very Google Chat-like windows), and text messages.

Hence, if the changes in the email product by AOL is not significant as compared to other competitors, it may be difficult for AOL to build its customer base over a period of time.

Thanks for the referral, Puja....
