today -what matters is the external representation of facts, events, appearance of people.. where do we have the time to look into the person- the inward self.. do we do that ourselves? we have long lost that habit of looking deep inside of ourselves, so appearance mater, people who talk more have brains- so thats how the corporate world sees and percieves, the sad aspect of working life

The debate is strange, from where i stand... suppose any one of us goes to the super market...two kind of cheese is there one properly packed, well marketed & defined AND the other one is just kept without much of this bragging though the latter one is fresh, 85% of the busy buyers will choose the first one & will be happy with it..as they have never tasted the later one..SO WHAT TO DO...I beleive both aesthetics & reach or skill is important...

Even in IT and Research role the employees will be in contact with clients and other financially important people, so even in those jobs appearance will matter - just imagine, who will you trust most to do a job for you when you take the first look at them? a person who take care of her/him -self or one who doesn't?

Dear Subhasini, In my experience I have seen that Good appearnce with skill would definitely lead to success.Skill alone will not work in sometimes in some cases.Whereas good apperance with skill will always meet success in any attempt and in any event Though Good appearnce with no amount of skill will keep the opponent to be happy in receiving. after your convincing reply that Skill can be attained after the entry though it is not existing at the initial stages will keep him to consider you.Any how good appearance with skill will always keep you to success.

We may not be able to generalise whether the decision on recruitment is based on either skill or appearance, even assuming only these two are the parameters for selection. It mainly depends upon the job content. for ex) the job involves moving with human beings requires predominantly appearance than skill, whereas job involved with machines, equipments etc., with lesser interaction with human beings skill makes more sense.

skill for sure. a person cannot built his career with just appearence.. if we a pay aprice for a food, taste should matter more than the the eye appeal. though appearence is also necessary but it doesnot lasts long.but attitude does matters all the time..

appearance vs skill is not a correct discussion at all, if anybody can take a chance when they are hospitalised / any emergencies for good looking peoples, alike skill is a matter, the appearance stands for short time. if any company is agreed any big mistakes, losses behalf of the good looking persons no one will do that. so skill is always a leader. but some of the organisations looking for good looking persons, that's totally a wrong things....

Tough, not stating the Job - answering is wrong, I feel. If its front office, public relations, modeling etc- how can we say skill? its appearance 90% first. If its IT, Research etc its SKill and skill only. So, one cannot conclude by having topics of this un conlcusive nature, modify the title/topic and debate

It is very situational. Both are important, depending on the KRAs being defined for the said individual. If the job is marketing or any job which is client facing then Appearance+skill is important. But otherwise it is skill. one cannot separate both, nor look at any one of them in isolation. The best bet is a combination of both.If we take a decision only on appearance and wait for the skill to surface at a latter time, the probability is 50-50.But having tested him and found his skill to be good, then its worth taking a risk even if the appearance is not satisfying. Because appearance is very relative. But if you feel the person is not suitable in terms of skill sets, but only good in appearance, we cannot take a risk.

I agree with that. Your resume will get you in to a job interview, but it is your appearance in the interview that will give you the job - no matter if your appearance is required in the job or not. This also applies in professional life. You can be so skilled, but in the end it will be the people with the best appearance and subsequent skills that will win the day.

Both are necessary. Skill alonemay get the job done but appearance has its own relevance - it tells others that you are taking your job seriously and with due respect. It also makes it easy for others to work with you if you took your appearance seriously.
