Hi Ganesh.. So you have asked same question twice. Redandancy reduces the interest level. Biofule is good but tell me staright that can you use biofuel the same way we use fossil fuels? Do we actually have a concrete option?

It is a good option, but will face a problem in coming future due to unwillingness of Govt.

Yes bio fuels are good alternatives of non-renewable sources of fuel. Today demand for power is increasing exponentially and there is need to look for alternative sources of energy. Gobar gas may be a good option as it provide cheap gas as well as manure for agriculture.

@padmaja: we surely can use the Biofuels the way we use the Fossil Fuel. With a minimal setting and tuning of the engine one can use certain preparation of Bio fuel directly.

@ganesh: It can be a substitute, but India being highly populate we can't compare ourselves with west. We have land limitation for cultivating the plants. Again the issues of foodgrains is persistant. Ethanol is a great source from the sugar industries but what it has multiple usages.

Again the commercial viability of bio fuel at present is a question.

Rather than finding a biofuel substitute to fossil can we have an alternate energy source is a question. The way automobile manufacturers are moving towards battery and H2O as a source for a vehicle.

Yes, I do think that biofuels are of great use since taking into account the current oil prices, they may contribute to a greater extent to the overall economy of India. Also we have to note that a lot of biomass that is produced in agriculture can be utilised.

Yes it is an alternative to fossil fuels, but we do not have much resources for biofuels so how the govt encourges the public to prefer that...

Biofuels are the best way of reducing our emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases responsible for global climate change. As with fossil fuels, burning biodiesel or ethanol to drive an engine or generate electricity releases carbon into the atmosphere. Unlike with fossil fuels, however, growing the plants from which biofuels are made takes carbon from the air, so overall the process is carbon neutral. This means policies to increase the use of biofuels could greatly reduce overall levels of carbon emissions, and so be a major part of tackling global climate change. They can also help improve local air quality as mixing ethanol with fossil fuels helps meet clean air standards.

This question should be modified as " Are biofuels a better alternative to fossil fuels for India? No doubt demand for energy is increasing exponentially, pollution is spreading at a faster rate. But can anybody insure that biofuels will be able to cope up with this increasing energy demand? Do we have the feedstock for biofuels? Do we have land for feed stocks to grow? Do we have the commercialised processes/technologies to make these fuels at the same competitive rate as the fuels derived from fossil fuels? Gobar gas e.g. contains about 40-45% Carbon di oxide which is major green house gas & its removal is a big challenge. India should concentrate more on solar energy utilization which can reduce a bit of our dependence on fossil fuels.

It is true that bio fuels can not be a better alternative to fossil fuels. But India's expanding economy and strong growth expected in the coming years will require additional energy to meet the existing demand. We need to adopt measures to conserve the scarce fossil fuels available in view of their strategic importance to our country.Besides the use of fossil fuels is not sustainable and is leading to environmental problems, especially the CO2 emission and climate change.Hence in India we are talking and discussing the importance of using renewable energy sources. Thanks for the referral Ms.Padmaja.

No, because to generate the most common types of biofuels, viz., biodiesel and ethanol requires enormous amounts of land, which is not available in India. For example, 1 hectare of land will yield about 1.6 KL of diesel per annum, from a typical jatropha plantation. Diversion of land for growing crops meant for biofuels will affect food production.

Padmaja I partially agree with you since fossil fuel is well established it really does not mean that we should not look into the other alternatives like bio fuels.

Some of my observations on this is:-

  • Bio-fuels can not meet our large requirements(production is not possible)
  • Environmentally friendly but cause a concern for poverty (using e.g maize, sugarcane, vegetable oil etc).
  • Certain equipment can use directly others need modification(may not be cost effective at-times).
  • It can be effectively used as a substitute to a possible extent.(to meet the depletion of fossil fuel)
  • Advantage is that storage & transportation is much easier because of its volatile property.
  • May be very useful in snow-bound Himalayan areas' operation.

Bio Fuel is still a dream. May b it has got many advantages as for carbon-monoxide is concern but when is the biggest question mark

Bio fuels could not be alternative to fossil Fuels . limitation factor is there and it is not todays birth ,govt has tried to support ,but i think it dosent work. It has never catched the operations/application in usage. in my openion ethnol may not be safe for engines .

I wish put one note that  I have a product That reduces ur co 2by 30% ,More o2 by 55% more hydrocarbons by 50%,Acid Nil , suplher free ,heating free applies to Petrol diesel coal (ATF) singly  increase efficiency by 30 to 60 % Ultimate amazing performance on engine .no chance to damage engines . Could reduce Fuel price by Rs 15 to 20 PL . all are practical road and real application results . Could save Rs 5,00,000 cr directly and indirectly 2,3 times more in economy . Its real . It is miracle . PMo Indiia like to suppport , could not talk about other ministries . It has been made& happened . It is under patent process . every performance is success and supportive.  It is success story at Nature ,financials and technical  levels .
