As such there is so much happening in retail sector with more FDI investments flowing into the country it is expected to grow very fast. It is said that India’s $250-billion food and agri-sector is expected to double in the next 10 years, so keeping in mind the Normal logistics and the cold chain maintenance for all the products will grow the cold strorage for a range of products is very much necessary for the big retail outlets that are yet to come, so What do you think are cold chain logistics a hot business property right now.......

According to me yes, because there is increase in the FDI investments in the country and there is so much happening in the retail sector in both organized and unorganized and for all of them they are going to need cold storage and its logistics and warehouse management. With wal-mart, Target and Tesco coming into the country in a big way, the requirement just increases readily for these storage and logistics facility, so yes investing in this business is a sure profit making one....

Hi Guys

Cold Chain Logistics is must for any retailer who want sto succed in there business.

Cold chains are essential for storage and distribution of perishable goods and temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals and biological preparations and forms an integral part of their supply chain. The present cold storage capacity in the India is grossly inadequate and with a positive future outlook for the agro, food processing, retail and pharmaceutical industry there is an urgent need to scale up and develop integrated cold chain facilities across the India.

Key Compoment needed:

- Cold Storage unit

- Refrigerated Transport Vehicle

- Village Refrigerators

- Cold Chain Containers

Key Target Market for Cold Chain is:

- Milk & Milk Products

- Fruits & Vegatables

- Meat & Meat Products

- Packed Foods

- Beverages

- Biologicals

There is an urgent need to build the integrated cold chain functions across the State in order to provide advanced environment controlled warehousing and transport solutions, right form the farm till end use consumption. It will assist in storage of significant quantity of commodities to enable uninterrupted supply throughout the year.

Based on above points, the investment needed is use for developing cold end to end chain. Yes it the way foward in the logistics space. But the question whether it is hot business at the moment. Then my answer is "No" due to the business climate in the current year.

Cold chains are definitely required..but NOW...well am not sure.

Though utility and importance of cold chains can be realised and it has already started yielding results as far as exports are concerned. For the domestic markets, the infrastructure has still a long way to go. Cold chain alone is not going to address the problem.

Creating awareness to the producers/ farmers about the benefits of using a cold chain by way of reduced wastage and increased incomes- Maintaining a cold chain right after harvest till consumption- Convincing the consumer to pay a higher price for the mark ups resulted by using a cold chain: All these have to be done simultaneously to make the cold chains financially viable.

Mr.Sudarsan i agree with you.Seeing the growth of retail sector in the indian market i can safely say that yes there will be huge demand for cold chain logistics and storage of these things will definitely increase.

But how should one go about this if we take into account the recession period which is going on, can we presume that retail sector won't be affected by it.

If one were to look at the statistics of waste of farm produce (almost 25%) in India due to lack of proper cool chain, then it looks like there is big business in the cold chain logistics. However the problem arises because having cold logistics doesnt necessarily lead to profits for the users of this service. Therein lies the problem.

Cold chain logistics is affordable and very effective, when used for transportation, storage and retail operation of high value produce like Apples, mangoes, grapes, strawberries etc. For large number of other produces likes vegetables and fruits, it doesnt make economic sense to use cool chain.

However given the size of the country and the increasing demand for quality and fresh farm at retail end, cold chain logistics is a very good business today.

cold chain logistics management is a growing and inportant part of supply chain and investment in this sector is bound to fetch good returns to the investor. With distribution of critically important items like vacine & life saving drugs, frozen foods like dairy, sea food poultry & meat products this sector is set on a growtth trajectory.

Very much . Its a hot property to study . All  FDI  start a business to look into profits . Food is the best business  to get a quick ROI . i Would not comment on this as I am a part of this group. The consumer behaviour in India is changing as well as his attitudes if we are specifically speaking about India .Every body needs food ebven if there is a credit crunch and people tend to buy food . Cold strorage or storing food in tyhe supply chain is the key operational area in this business - Ramesh Panavalli Walmart ASDA uk

Cold chain logistics is a much required need of Indian Industry.

The common man would surely feel and understand its need in the retail sector. However it is becoming an integral part of the Pharma sector where a lot of temperature sensitive drugs and devices need to be stored. The clinical research sector is another upcoming sector in India where cold chain plays a very crucial role for the samples and aso the tests conducted. The other areas wher cold chain can be effective are in floriculture sector. India is one of the largest producers of flowers, but has not reaped the benefits of  production capacity. n effective cold chain rightly utilised will increse the efficiency and effectiveness of a number of industries in India

Also just do simple mathematics. How many cold chain warehouses are their in India in other than port areas where fish is in abundance. You will find very less. to make things further simpler, just see the no. of cold chain warehouses in Punjab , the food bowl of india which will cater to a chunk of fresh material to these retail chains. Virtually none....so you can well imagine the dire requirement of these cold chains. The way retailers are making time bound plans for launching their retail chains are any players seriously thinking on Logistics park. Now this is the gap one can capitalise on. Cold chains are actually a hot preposition.

Yes i agree with shailena that the investment is very high, But then the  risk-reward is also  very high. A good support from professional investors like venture capitalists is a must for this type of business. This is capital intensive, but it is a very promising business for the future, Most of the investment banks are ready to invest in the logistics industry as there is great future in it...

I totally oppose with you . I hope you understand the importance  of waste . Because of the lack of cold storage there is millions of $ being wasted on a day to day basis . Waste would then be sent to landfill where I am not sure  India pays taxes or not but in UK we pay taxes / tonne . Sending this waste would also  increase our carbon foot print  thus increasing the climate hazards & the going against the enviorenment agenda .

I guess not because until and unless there is clear picture of all these big retail players coming, to go for it is not possible, And  entrepreneurs have to overcome several problems in this business. First, this is a capital intensive industry.  Investment in a cold chain could run from  hundreds of crores to  thousands of crores.  So this makes it less feasible for small and medium entrepreneurs to build big capacities of warehouses. For a normal person as me to go for it is very difficult.....
