It is seen that recession  is not there anymore on people's word list at the moment, but six months ago the situation was totally different and everybody was talking about recession, and now with World getting back on its feet after all the meltdown, it is seen that shopping districts and malls are bursting at the seams once again during the festive season. But, consumers are not splurging at the moment and are forcing marketers to offer more value for their money.

And with the festive season that is there in the country, what do you think guys Are consumers back on spending spree again? I think than anybody else a normal consumer will have a better perspective in this regard, so what are your views people.

According to me yes they are back on spending spree after all the meltdown that we all saw, but then the trend has changed as  consumers are spending more on necessities than lifestyle. And to me the trend is surprising, considering a clear improvement in the economy’s growth prospects in the current financial year that started April. The first fiscal quarter saw the national income grow by 6.1%, after two quarters of subdued growth.

There is increase in car sales, many industries are doing good at the moment, and an earlier than expected recovery of global economy are pointing towards a further improvement in the situation.  But then soaring food prices is not helping the cause. Latest consumption data clearly shows a change in consumer mindset, which is inclined more towards savings.

I agree with Shailena that the consumers have become conscious and are not on a spending spree. But on a deeper thought, I guess it's got more to with being CAUTIOUS than Conscious. People have seen the world economy reeling and many of them have also been through layoffs and paycuts. So people are not so sure that whether the world is out of recession or not. Add to that, the price-value continuum that people resorted to during the slowdown which saw more value being offered at reduced prices. Consumers have found new ways of reducing expenditure. The future of luxury goods are more at threat if people continue to refrain from spending ostensibly.

The recent rise in food prices and the weal monsoons (which again means price rise of basic commodities) is not helping either. So, I think it will take some time before the market really goes gung ho about spending. The Diwali celebration is expected to give a boost to consumer spending.

Yes definitely there are positive signs that things are getting back to normal, but Retailers need to be careful and have to be very calculative in terms of pricing and deals as still customer is doubled minded while spending.Things of basic necessity will be given 1st priority......Mantra for success for retailers should be low margins and volume sale.

I don't think so that consumers are at full force with their spending spree as it was earlier, people are still cautious and are very careful where they are really spending they really want a good ROI in that sense and are very careful when it comes to spending, people haven't forgot the stressful days that they just went through with and i don't believe they are back again spending like in the past, still some time to go for that to happen.
