According to a latest report, firing off e-mails and cueing up video conferences speeds up work manifold, but also is damaging trust. High-tech communication cuts down the personal interaction needed to build trust, a key ingredient in getting workers to pull together and carry their share of the load.

Technology has made us much more efficient, but much less effective. Something is being gained, but something is being lost. The something gained is time and the something lost is the quality of relationships. Relationships that build trust are critical when employees work together on projects. Collaborative projects suffer when workers doubt their colleague's sincerity, creating a sense of injustice that leads them to shirk their own responsibilities. Businesses should balance use of e-mail with face-to-face meetings to recharge relationships and the trust they instil.

So users, are e-mails damaging relationships in business?

The trust needed to build teamwork wanes when projects are managed by way of detached, high-tech means rather than personal interaction. Businesses need to re-examine their use of high-tech communication, which has grown over the last two decades because more companies are spread out geographically rather than under the same roof.

not at all because today business is grow up very fast and e-mail play vary imp role in and even not only for business for other things like study and more e-mail play very important role

And you can think in opposite way it increases the communication between the people because in a meeting the business man meet once in a month hardly but by internet (e-mail ) they are connected every time

I agree with Sasi completely on this. A good teamwork is always based on trust. Mistrust is derailment of teamwork hence any project.

You are right upto some extent Me.Sasi Dash.

Business to become more success face to face interaction with confidence building measures and building good relationship with the customers are very important. This does not mean everybody is against e-mails. we are discussing about the impact.

Thanks Sashi.

YES it damages the business relations and also  it restrict in developing new business relations. This is an interesting statistics that  Video conferences has reduced nos. of passenger of air lines and that has affected air line business too.We are loosing the personal touch in business by this modern new way of communications.  You may be surprise that  our leading export oriented Diamond Business is being carried out by personal touch and with trust only and no such e mail services or video conference are helpful in business.

I am not in against of such modern way of communications but some times I thinks that I may be more comfortable by  meeting person while performing the business. Both the things, modern communication with personal touch is an effective  product mix for an effective business.

Purely on a relationship level, e-mails cause more damage than good.

They are so easy to tyope and send with minimum effort - there are no opportunities to retrospect, have second thoughts, edit the draft etc - thay they are sent without the calming effect of reflection.

E mail is a tool. effectiveness depends on how one uses it. Technology advantage is it cuts across space and time and puts all of us in virtual reality. May be a bold and new language emerge to set the equation right between the individuals in virtual space which is as good as meeting in person.

How can the use of emails damage relationships in business? An absurd idea! It helps communication easier and faster. If it suits both parties, I don't see any harm in using technology as a medium to connect and be in touch. Nowadays, people are so busy and so mobile that it eventually helps in communication, and also saves times in commuting.

Hi... First thing that E-mail is a coomunication tool... Not a communication... It all depends how you use. Even over talking on a project and multiple discussion can eat a lot of time and some time results as an argument.

Any Smart project manager or coordinator will use personal communication or meeting to brief up the things and then mail to communicate details. This works same in marketing as well. I have interactions with 20-50 clients average in any working day. I use to communicate on call then follow up on mail. This boosts my productivity. So Identifying need is first objective and then communication medium and effectiveness comes into picture.

This is what I believe....

Thanks for invite Sasi,

Email is a tool and an effective and  convenient one to speed up information exchange. It never was meant to replace personal interactions as and when mandated by situations.

Misuse or over use of anything can be harmful, you will agree.

No I don't think so.  As per my personal experience it is very useful and can work as a bridge. if you are able to express your self in words that may work as your presence.  Though Interaction works more for the personal and business relation but I am sure Email is also beneficial.
