Coming out of recession, nearly 100,000 IBM India employees are set to receive a $1,000 stock bonus each before June 16, the day when the Big Blue celebrates its hundred years of existence, in a move that will force other multinational and Indian tech firms to dole out more incentives to check attrition.  So which is better options Esops or Cash rewards?? Esops and Cash Rewards are two forms of compensation. We need to consider the purpose behind going for one of these. The purpose could be to retain employees, promote loyalty among them and to provide a sense of ownership in which case Esops would be a better option. Or it could be to attract high skilled employees in a competitive industry and have them work atleast for a short time in which case cash rewars is a better option. The decision also depends on the life stage of the employees. Young employees in their twenties and thirties generally prefer cash rewards whereas older employees prefer security and hence esops.

Thanks Ayan for referral. In my opinion ESOPS is probably the best option for employees at all times.

ESOPs -- as it gives a sense of ownership and inforces brand loyalty. Employees start looking at a holistic picture. The best example is L&T. Loyalty and low attrition is an intrinsic part of its culture

ESOPS when properly, transparently implemented can give a sense of ownership to the employees and to some extent control attrition.

What is yours is what's available on hand! Where's the guarantee that crisis like Satyam, Sub-prime crisis, which halted the developed countries' progress, would not surface in the near future! Almighty is in the process of punishing wicked in order to save the righteous people!

Yes...in a year when TCS, Infosys, Wipro and other IT biggies are are preparing to fight the talent war, IBM’s latest move to retain and woo new staff is expected to force many others to explore stock-based incentives apart from other perks. As these tech firms prepare to cope with rising demand for outsourcing, India has become the battleground to hire the most and retain the best performers.

For instant gifting, cash rewards are better. Given the state of the stock markets, i wouldnt be too enthused with esops.
