Genetically modified food (GM food) has made a big splash in the news lately. The term GM foods or GMOs (genetically modified organisms) is used to refer to the crop plants created for animal as well as human consumption using latest molecular biology techniques.

According to this technique the plants have been modified in the laboratory to improve nutritional content and resistance to herbicides. These foods have the potential to solve many of the world's hunger problem. Yet there are many challenges ahead for governments, especially in the areas of safety testing, regulation, international policy and food labelling.

So users, what do you think? Is Genetically modified food Boon or Bane?

The world's population is growing at a fast rate, and there is an acute increase in the demand for food. Even at this stage, GM foods ensure to meet all the food needs. This technique makes the crops pest resistant, disease resistant, cold tolerant, herbicide tolerant, and drought tolerant/salinity tolerant. Also, in several countries people rely on just one crop, which becomes the staple crop of the region, like rice in India. Now rice is genetically engineered to contain additional vitamins and minerals ion order to alleviate nutrient deficiencies. For example, it is very common that people develop blindness due to lack of vitamin A, keeping this in mind researchers developed the "golden rice," containing an unusually high content of beta-carotene (vitamin A). During the growth of plants and trees, the main problem that remains is of soil and water pollution. Many popular trees are being genetically engineered to clean up heavy metal pollution from contaminated soil. So it is very much necessary to develop these kind of crops to fulfill food scarecity.

GM food originated thru GM seeds are real poison...!! It's like fertilizers directly injected into seed, so what will be the outcome..!??

Nothing but pure poison...! Genetical changes are always proved lethal to mankind.

Our Govt. have approved the import of these seeds as well.. results are never calculated.. these seeds will ruin the soil, ruin the environment, ruin original taste of the vegetables/fruits, add poison to our body resulting in premature deaths, liver and kidney attacks and permament damage to other organs...!!

Moreover, these are strictly banned in US, Europe, UK, Australia... On what grounds are these tested on Indian public..!?

Just b'coz we let them do that..!!

Just like all the banned drugs in pharma shops, these too are just tested on us.. And trust me we are not RATS anymore.. so wake up please and be against it..

Terrorism gained another hand on extension by this.. Any killing bacteria, virus, etc can be injected to seeds, resulting in major casualities across Nation..!!

The more people tend to control nature, the more worse the results are..!!
Wonder whatever humans have created, that is for their self destruction..!!

I strongly oppose the use of GM seeds/food..

Bane - Yes and Boon - No! Your question is a bit confusing to answer "yes" or "No". Is this Yes/No for Boon or Bane?

GM crop is a boon for human as we are having many preventive measure to be resistant against GMO`S bad part...now day to day population is increasing so we need GM crops more..It can help our country to be a good leader in exporting.which will decrease the unemployment in country...so to develop preventive against harmful organism is necessary through antibiotics....

we need to contemplate on the whole technique, that how the hybrid food is raised and it's effects on the health.

see seeing the current population rate, we can't deny the fact that we our facing food crisis in many poor and developing nations. so, we really need to do something about this and if scientist have found a good alternative we should consider it rather than opposing it . as we are advancing to future we had to give it a go, however the quality and nutrition shl'dnt be compromised. we can't make something competent enough to what nature provides us, however options should be open as we have encroached nature and we are burdening our mother earth.......so to feed thousand mouths we need to consider,,,,,and is upto us only..

Every new thing come up with advantages and disadvantages. As some one is said that terrorism gained a new hand in this beside that some will get job too if we designed a committee to maintain its stock but these are secondary issues primary one is that yes we require some fast growing, can tolerate any env conditions. After sometime we surely move towards this so why not today it give us time to think and work over its demerits.

Yes GM Crops can bring down the food crises to some extent, but not at the cost of risking our health itself!! India needs technology but only in tiling, harvesting and marketing and not in growing corps. Genetically Modified Corps are not only unhealthy but also raise the costs of production. Some European nations have banned foodstuff made with GM corps.

Why should we use this kind of modified food....Why dont we encourage our farmers to cultivate our natural food in a larger fashion to fit the present needs....

God....The scientists modifying the food should be punished....I dont know why these people dont get any ideas except the bad ideas....

Time is not matured to give permission to GM crops, more stringent method should be employed. tagging is must seeds mixing up with native variety taken care

GM vegetable grown in protected environ like glass house. By the way China has given approval for GM rice variety, let us watch closely.

The major problem of food scarecity is available land and farmers..!

Increasing the farmers strength or privatizing agriculture land is more important than developing GM food!

Sounds more adulteration is going to happen in India!

I agree to Mr. Satwinder..

GM crops have several disadvantages. This may effect human health. As many children in US and Europe have developed life threatening allergies. It also causes unknown effect on human health. In these crops, non-plant organisms are also used, But Bacillus thuringiensis, the gene which is a naturally occurring bacterium that produces crystal proteins that are lethal to insect larvae. So I think these crops are not good for health.
