As today most of us are talking about Global warming as an international issue and as recently we saw the Copenhagen summit, but in a recent report by Climategate-II, Himalayan glaciers might disappear by 2035. On the other hand, the Indian panel, looked at 150 years of data gathered by the Geological Survey of India from 25 Himalayan glaciers was the first comprehensive study of the region which concluded that while Himalayan glaciers had long been retreating.

1.jpg

There was no recent acceleration of the trend, and nothing to suggest that the glaciers would disappear. The main source of the Ganges, actually receded fastest in 1977, and is today practically at a standstill. We are looking at the issue and will be able to comment on the report after examining the facts. The science doesn’t change: Glaciers are melting across the globe and those in the Himalayas are no different. We’re not changing anything till we make an assessment.

So I want to ask the users in the platform, according to them, does the expose on melting of glaciers indicate that global warming concerns are exaggerated?

Carbon according to me is the least of our worries!!

Has anyone given a thought to the METHANE emmmissions at all?? 4,85,000 million bovine creatures population in Inida emits methane which is highly dangerous to our environment. Methane traps 20 times more heat than Carbon and also has the capacity to duplicate its content in the atmosphere in just 10 years!!! That is a much bigger hazard than Carbon!!

Out of 100 proven cases of global warming if one case is exaggerated that does not mean global warming is not there. This is just an excuse that anti global warming lobby has been waiting for. The fact remains that our World is faced with a major problem. It is not going to happen overnight but will be a slow but accelerating process. It is the humanity that will face the consequences. Are we far sighted enough to change the trends or are we going to close our eyes like Cats do. Media has to create the awareness and not play politics with the problem and try to score brownie points. But I think its better to exaggerate things, when it comes to Global warming, so we will react more quickly and our actions will prevent disasters from happening. These issues are very critical and needs to be handled as an emergency issue. Still we have time to save universe, grow more trees, stop killing birds and wild life animal, stop concrete jungle, etc.

Thank ypu Mr. Shenoy, I mean it. Not only is Methane dangerous if not controlled as a major green house gas, but it has also found its uses in electrifying homes and for production of 'bio gas' for cooking. The rural sector particilarly should benefit largely from this if people just sgift their focus from carbon to methane,

This is good knowledge Sir!!

Mr. Shenoy,

Though the knowledge is still limited I will try and post some more meaningful material!!,,, I have already mentioned this in my comment earlier abd there is no question of misleading anybody here! Thank you Mr. Shenoy :)

let nature play its role,if it wants to washout some part of the earth let it do it....it has the first right. We cant save our earth...i say with confidence because this is a cycle of processes which happen at appropriate time.....nature takes care of itself...we are just trying to mask ourselves as savers of the earth...we dont have the capacity. No one born on this planet has the capacity. Our job was/is/will be to work in a healthy manner and let nature work its own way.As development will proceed so will the damage to nature also proceed in one way or the other.

In the earlier century Mr. Shenoy...

The car population was non existent virtually!! The human populace was countable. The green on the land was far more in percentahe and seasons were playing by the thumb rule of nature!! When you compare something please make sure that you are comparing it with co existent properties not yesteryears properties. Thats hardly a yardstick to go by.

Please coma back with an arguable comment Sir! :)

Yes, to my mind, it is; The global warming is being exaggarated for the last 10-15 yrs. No doubt, due to rapid de-forestation, vehicular pollution, industrial pollution etc., there may be a change int he temperatures which cause problems to be mankind. But, the exaggaration that the Himalayan glaciers would come to an end shortly, that the ice-cap of Arctic would disappear, that the whole land mass would be drowned by the sea-water are all exaggarations and negetive thinking. The climatic conditions are largely dependent upon the planetary positions and polar winds which are, in turn, are subjected to cosmic changes. Till recent past, the scientists were warning about global warming. The present cold situations prevailing in most parts of the world are not answered satisfactorily. It is better for us to think about the place we live in, instead of thinking about the cosmic things, because neither we could control storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, nor we can influence the climate of our globe.

American & European countries wish to sale their products on the name of global warming & make the huge profit they are the big looters of the World. It is our outspokenness that causes the trouble. This is indicative of the fact that nobel prize is given more for political and other reasons than the real merit. It is very subtly used by the US and other European countries to carry forward their political and economic agendas which benefit them the most. Nobel laureates always are ready to play their tune for they are aware that they have been favoured which has to be returned.

I agree with Udai. It is better it is exaggerated because we cannot control the nature completely. So this has been happening years together and one day it will come to an end. We need to accept what ever nature does because we have crossed our limit of controlling it.

Thanks.....

Global warming concerns are not exaggerated. It is high on the agenda globally and it is something for all of us to take deep interest in.

It is a good topic for discussion at Toostep but the melting of the glacier cannot be the only factor to make a sound judgement.

MR.Makrand,

adding further knowledge to all here is a valuable input self explanatory  THAT METHANE SHELF LIFE IS NOT MORE THAN 8.5 YEARS;;

Methane is created near the Earth's surface, primarily in soils, rivers/seas and in animal guts. It is carried into the stratosphere by rising air in the tropics. Uncontrolled build-up of methane in the atmosphere is naturally checked—although human influence can upset this natural regulation—by methane's reaction with hydroxyl radicals formed from singlet oxygen atoms and with water vapor.

Methane in the Earth's atmosphere is an important greenhouse gas with a global warming potential of 25 compared to CO2 over a 100-year period. This means that a methane emission will have 25 times the impact on temperature of a carbon dioxide emission of the same mass over the following 100 years. Methane has a large effect for a brief period (a net lifetime of 8.4 years in the atmosphere), whereas carbon dioxide has a small effect for a long period (over 100 years). Because of this difference in effect and time period, the global warming potential of methane over a 20 year time period is 72. The Earth's methane concentration has increased by about 150% since 1750, and it accounts for 20% of the total radiative forcing from all of the long-lived and globally mixed greenhouse gases.[17] Usually, excess methane from landfills and other natural producers of methane is burned so CO2 is released into the atmosphere instead of methane because methane is such a more effective greenhouse gas. Recently methane emitted from coal mines has been successfully converted to electricity.

Arctic methane release from permafrost and clathrates is an expected consequence of global warming.

In prehistoric times, large methane excursions have been linked with dramatic shifts in the Earth's climate, notably during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum and during the Permian-Triassic extinction event, which was the worst ever mass extinction.

Mr Makrand,

you are taking the same line as what i want to stress. Thanks.

further global warming is masive phenomene and you must understand the the methane is the least of its problem and further as per your theory of bovine gases there is no substantial increase compared to last century.pls do not milead people with wrong stats

We all know its happening. Gradually the intensity is strong and evident. This does not require certificate of Geological Survey, The reports prepared by them should be investigated. I am not raising any question on their competence but their are other factors besides the receding glaciers.

The world wide data collected by various organizations and increasing trend of mercury in past two decades , environmentalists have been able to establish the fact convincingly and gradually the worldwide populace is realizing the fact. Small steps have been taken which will turn out as a global movement and that is the need of the time. We should be very cautious in diluting the concern as it would lead to more relax approach by the mass towards a grave concern,

The fact of the matter is Global warming exist and is accelerating at constant speed. We need to be extra cautious otherwise we are going to pay a huge price. The over-consumption and utilization of resources resulted in the extinction of hundreds of species.

It is better if it is exaggerated , we need a completely  new world order for survival in terms of economical model , utilization of waste , consumption and consumerism aspects.

Global warming is there..its a matter of exhaustive scientific study....exaggeration does not mean to create a rumour, it is part of creating awareness and attention towards problem....

We are experiencing the change in climatic cycle and warmth...its true...

It may happen if we don't take corrective action now....It may not happen because study is based on certain data base which may be wrong...

Nothing is exaggerated.

i is wrongn reasons r as:

  • there were 4 times more bovinec ealier century.
  • methane is unstable in ultraviolet at the higher temp /atmosphere.
  • co2 is more stable compound even in UV and similarly the HCFC componds.
  • methane emitted is from total bio materials hence the carbon content is same.
  • and ther so many reasons

Although i m not an environmentalist but based upon what i have read about it in the newspapers is that- "Globally the money spent upon recent Copenhagen summit was not to make fool of own mass in the state of recession."There were leaders from the whole world who tried desperately for positive outcome.

We chose leaders because we trust them to a certain level .. but i think it is certainly impossible for politicians to script a drama to fool people on such a big stage where whole world is involved.

Does not seems so.. There are 100 other authentic reports which are error free & all of such reports contain warnings about impending danger of global warming. The impact of global warming is already being felt across various regions of world including India. Weather cycle has already experienced gradual change & which is affecting cropping patterns / cropping output leading to major adjustments in market prices of related commodities.

For the argument sake..even if the reports are exaggerated, then too we should take cognizance of such reports & initiate remedial measures on personal as well as institutionalized basis so that excessive consumption of natural resources is controlled & same facilities remain available to our future generation. Exaggerations may create panic & but this panic will trigger a thoughtprocess among humankind to adopt gradual shift towards more disciplined approach towards life.

It is a fact Global warming is affecting the climate. In some regions it is cooler and in some regions it is becoming hotter. The climate is kind of see sawing at the moment to balance itself.

If we do not step in and acknowledge it, the sooner we come to terms with it and take some action to reduce its effects the better it is.

I totally agree with you Kavita....the exaggeration is must to create the mass awareness on such a serious issue, as a major group of society is still illiterate and they need to understand the value of every drop of water. The strict law has to be introduce n implemented against the culprits who are trying to harm the environment.

Too early to comment weather or not exaggerated as it is not easy to measure.

Yet it is for real and the sooner we start to act on prevention the better it is for all.

Concerns are not made to look big. There could be some negligence in some reports here and there. Concerns are really a big threat. We all know that in life nothing comes free and we have to pay price sooner or later. Generation of Global warming gases to support comfortable human lives has to be paid for at some stage by someone. In this case it appears that our future generation will pay for this. Just consider - If you aircondition a 100 sq feet room, the heat taken out of this room is shared by rest of the world. Whole world is doing such activities without bothering about the rest.
