It depends on how strong is the foundation. No damage was caused by the earthquake in Japan. It is about building quality buildings and then they can be quake-roof!

I can't think of Metros without high rise buildings. If all that staying is provided with independent houses, than there will be perhaps no land available for construction. Due to concentration of people in small place, other facilities like swimming pool, gym etc. are well maintained. How ever, high rise building concept and its amenities needs to change

Thanks for referral Ms. Jyoti. Considering low space, environment and population, I support high rise buildings. But during construction the engineers should aware about the land and calculate the land survive capacity.

As long as it is built according to specifications, High rise buildings are as safe as a regular independent house.

Why Not . After all I am in the team of the professional involved in the  construction of the India's Tallest Tower ( 450 Meter)  .

First of all high rise buildings are essential due to limited space.Only vertical expansion can provide shelter for growing population. The buildings are constructed keeping space allround and height of building is fixed according to space of land. The buildings are structuraly designed safely to combat weight of building, live load, wind pressure, earthquake etc.The quality of materials used are tested periodically and works are carried out by efficient engineers with  most sofisticated equipments where chances of error are less. There are statutory norms as per ISI to keep sufficient no of lifts and stairs and importantly fire fighting arrangements. Its always safe to reside there.Unfortunately we have seen some buildings collapsed where mostly the promoters did not bother to maintain quality during construction and sometimes corrupted govt officilas sanctioned illegal plans for buildings.Rather most of individual houses are built under supervision of  non technical persons where the quality are not always assured.

Pragya I agree with you. The high rise is required today made with best quality steel and cement since we have high population the row houses will not help.

When ever we talk about a high rise it should be earthquake proof without which it will not at all be safe to stay in such building.

The argument put forwarded with latest result is proof enough that high rise buildings are safe if they earth quake compliant and quality one.

I support the argument.

Given all the factors mentioned here I would still say that living in a high rise is marginally safer than living in an independent house. It makes certain amenities more affordable and possible. It also eliminates some of the maintenance head aches. The quassi community living does provide some additional security.

World created the tallest building in Dubai, I think around 820 meter high. Even though, it was facing a Financial crisis, it was completed & made open a year or so, back.

All these wonder does connote, multi-storey buildings are safe. A design that assures building its integrity in all respect from conceptual to construction, gives an air of confidence . Mostly, the safety factors in selection of material & provisions for entry & exit , emergency evacuation facility, constant vigilance (security systems) help enrich these ideas. Moreover, the load bearing capacity of soil by test (as there are 3 type of soil A,B & C), wind effect calculation by engineering methods assure the safety. Also , seismic consideration may be taken, if one is prone to that kind of activity.

Nothing is safe in this world, but if proper care is taken while it's construction, then there is no harm to live in high rise building.

Thanks for referral, Pragya.

No. Its simple geometry. If height is more the displacement at end point will be more. So any small jerk will result in more serious repercussions. Secondly it is big threat to the adjacent area/buildings. It a tower falls it is definitely going to cover longer distance. Third, in case of mishaps evacuation is difficult in high rises. ... Advantages: No flooding, good air flow.

chennai is classified as zone III. Has CMDA got Mtech structural enggrs in their panel? 2.Is there a mechanism to find out how much fly ash is mixed in concrete 3. has the state equipped to handle fire at floors beyond 15 floors.4.is there a fire exit arrangement since one cannot use both the stairs and lift incase of fire in the building.

IT is generally safe to stay in an independent house rather than a high rise building as you dont have the fear of floor above you impoding in the event of a quake. Even if a high rise is quake resistant, it will still suffer some damage in a heavy quake of 8pts and above on the richter scale. Whereas an independent house is safe even if collapses because then it is easier to remove the victims from the debris. Also it is easier to run out in the advent of a quake compared to staying in the 15th flr of a 20 storied building.

The 'safety'has not fixed address for any one.It depends upon time and nature. Some regular houses can harm more than high rise one.

There is no comparison between independent houses and high rise buildings when it comes to safety. Independent houses, by their very nature and feature, are always safer than high rise buildings. But compulsions force people to opt for high rise buildings.
