This is a general question we generally hear about us. Indian's, as the world knows are the cheap people, reasons could be many things.

The assumption that we are cheap is not new & it is derived from the facts of our behavioral activities.

So, are Indian's cheap??

In my opinion to some extent we all are cheap. People perceive that we are cheap by our behaviour at different places & the way we think & approach things. But most of the times we can't help it because we are brought up in such kind of environment & thus it has a long lasting effect.

Thus, this can be changed with experience & presence of mind.

We (Indians) are not cheap at all. And in behavior we are more precious in world. Our culture, tradition is most valued around the world. We are cheap only in the sense of our earning or outsourced work done by us. But it doesn't show our cheap behavior. I don't have any fact to say Indians are cheap.

God d$%^it yes. It's in our blood! Look at India for god's sake. None of us have relatives who are alive that don't have a direct connection to colonialism. Look at all the countries which most Indian people are from. Trinidad and Tobago, India, Guyana. None of us who are alive today do not have at least one relative that remembers colonialism. When the British kept our lands as colonies, they took our resources so we really had to make do with what we had. So in a way, we're not cheap, we just know how to stretch our resources to the max. America can learn from us Indians.

They indicate in so many ways that we are unwanted. They send students back every sememster to make sure that they dont establsih themselves. Even our CAs are given clerical jobs. Our medical degrees are not recognised!!!!!You want to keep piling on? This is the result!!!!As teaching assists we are given clerical, office jobs, waht is wrong???? I think it is only feasible when Oxford, and otehr universities invite our scholars as they then make place for them and take care of their expenses. Just paying yur way through is utter follishness!! Making your own place is going to make you a demon!!!I think when you have the best instutes here, why keep running away, unless you have a sad family situation. In that cse, everybody will exploit more!!!

It's a very basic issue, why should any country give its power and money to foreigners, which is what all Indians aspire for and never get!!! Indians, if given leadership roles will only help otehr Indinas, and make asses of themselves. How many foreigners do we give Chairmen, and otehr leadership roles, or government roles??? Dont we always make sure that they leave the country after a period of time?

Yes, I think you should hear what opinion international ppl have of us. It doesn't pay just to live in a national framework. Internationally, we get movies only like SLumdog, and our representation abroad is abysmal. On FTV, there is not a single woman or male Indian model. In swimming, or sports, not a single person makes it!!! What the hell, these liars can't find the remedy to anything bec they keep pasting on lie over lie!!!

Yes! Atleast that is what the Congress thinks of Indians. On 25th Apr Manish Tiwari, the Congress spokesperson, during a discussion about Endosulfan, the questionable pesticide, which is banned in most of the countries, told the nation that though there is evidence that misuse of the pesticide may be harmful, there is no economically viable alternative. In other words, economics is more important than the human life!!!

Indian labor cheap? Listen, you get what you pay for and Indians earn less for giving less. Indians are so money minded and they don't care who they have to try and step on to get what they want. Like a bunch of crabs in a bucket I've seen them stab there own families in the backk for a dollar. It's pathetic. Heres a thought for the new year. How about not being cheap on personal hygiene and perchase some pleasant smelling deodorant from one of the local convenient stores I'm sure you will get an employee discount so it wont burn your stomach too much to actually spend the $3 on it. Please for the love of god or that elephant with 16 arms that you pray to stop swerving your heard side to side arrogantly when speaking.

We, Indians, have created the situation. In the initial years of opening up of economy, our own techies and other professionals had shown their urgency in settling in international soil, bemeaning themselves as secondary citizen and allowed them to be deceived by the so called contractors and international agents who had stashed away upto 50% of their earnings during the contractual appointment period. They allowed themselves to be exploited and proved to the world that Indian labour is cheap. Attracted international organisations openly by explicitly mentioning that labour in India is cheap, hence pass on the work to us! We are responsible for this situation. Those Indians who are earning at par with the counterparts of international organisations are alienating themselves from the upcoming professionals rather than giving them the nuances of promoting the professionals of this country!

We cannot generalize. But we should not be so cheap as not to admit that there is a vast scope to improve. We should become better citizens and work for a better standard of politics. In corruption we are in a shameful level. There is a general saying that India is a good country occupied by bad people! We should try to prove it wrong.

Although I've voted for 'No'because of the pride or ego of being Indian I do support your views as because we have to point the finger towards us as we ourselves are responsible for this perception. It's because of lack of grooming, indifference to learn propriety and behave accordingly. The governance of our states and the nation as a whole is also partly responsible.

Hi Nitin,

First in case,,

You should note that India is not a nation but a country.  If you donot know, please know.  Rest every arguement is useless as it doesnot convey anything... and are you Kalam to defend and you know only those that are written via media.

My questions are different and you seem you cannot understand at what I am projecting.

When you say respect, I respect or not is upto me and not upto you.  That is my personal valuation... because you have come upto this extent... I believe you are a person who could hardly see anything... and when you cannot see... you will know what I would type next...?

a person may be a role model but he may not be the same for every person... and opinion differs... and you should know that first... and when you for many other youth, may not be for many others... even...

What I have done to the society is not know to you and hence you cannot comment on that area...

Finally... let the argument or debate be healthy... donot ever try to enter into personal relations of another... and this is not a manner expected from your appearance in photo... being displayed...

Dear Manoj,

Good that you have given someone's insight... and according to what you have written...?
I have a few questions.. if not too many...

1.  regarding foreign goods... He (kalam) being president, why did he not try to put an end to import of foreign goods.?  did he ever make such contributions...? atleast for name sake.

2. regarding Dr.Sudarshan, How many such tribal villages could he convert into self- etc...

Even he (kalam) drew his statement from Israel and couldnot appreciate the good in the Indian media.. and he himself is negetive and hence cannot promote....

3. last but not the least... we are not a nation... but a country.

How can anyone tell that "Indians are cheap".I do not agree with this at all. The only problem is that, we do not value ourself better. We always see us lower than the other people. It's a fact that the most brilliant people in the world are the "Indians", but the thing is that, we do not know where to use it and for whom to use it.

Hi all, I can see many people have asked one common question - Cheap in what sense? Well we are cheap the way we think, We are cheap the way we approach things, We are cheap the way we do things & this is the reason being a superpower we are still developing & limping.

We are responsible for our cheapness & nobody else. Mr. Anand has explained it very beautifully & I completely agree with. We all know how to talk big, but who goes ahead & make s it happen.....nobody.

The world is right in calling Indian's cheap because our mentality is depicted by our acts....whether you accept it or not.

I have a equivocating answer: but the option I chose as YES is her historical reason than behavioural reason.  A strong reason being INSECURITY.  eg: place a chocklate or some eatable to a child (below or equal to some 4 yrs) he immediately closes his palm with another.  Why does he do that?  it is fear of loss that which he likes... and some ... though they donot like, they do the same...

This is built into indegenious indian genetics.  Since ages, we didnot have identity, right from 3750 bc. aryans invaded, hunas invaded, others invaded, recently even slaves invaded, Mughals invaded and latest entries like english, dutch, potrugese, etc.. invaded and they left their marks over us.  We people being afraid of foreign element and being afraid of loss of what we possess hadn't developed or had time to develop independent identity which gives us sence of security.  Fun is that we are independent for name sake... and have lost all that we have in the name of globalisation, privatisation etc... all these so called latest cultures and are bounded by foreign influences.

Simple fact is that: when we try to immitate, we are ignoring our identity: simple example: Am I like Rajiv Gandhi (any other person for that matter - I chose his name because he is known mostly to all Indians) or is Rajiv Gandhi like me...

The moment you try to ignore your self implies we are trying to get some thing that is not of ours... that what we may be expecting may be cheap to others but costly to us or vice versa.

latest example is about BPOs.: we need money, and we do work for much less than what  they pay at their respective locations and hence we are labelled cheap.

donot bother... in the next decade China will be our partner in Cheap labour and even those will also be labelled cheap.

We live on false prestiges: We donot like to touch broom stick at your homes (most of the people) but we do the same in places other than in India.  so are we doing labour cheaply or are we doing cheap labour.

So, finally, CHEAP may imply to the work we do or behaviour we possess.

I would like to connect: disha's latest article (Lecturer Xaviour college)
At times though we are not cheap, we have to be cheap.

I have seen all the arguments. Its true & I accept that we are cheap. We are cheap in thinking that is why after 65 yrs of independence people still die of hunger & poverty. The world is correct in calling Indian's as cheap. The reason being we are fools & offer cheap labour through outsourcing. Innovations happen in the west & re-cycling of the byproduct happens in India.

And the most amazing part is we take pride in doing so. This is the first sign of cheapness. Tell me one IT company that thrives on Innovation.....I bet You can't even name one. All the IT companies in India survive on outsourcing because its cheap. Try to be the forefathers not followers...

I think Leena is correct, We are cheap people. But it was our cheapness that helped in inventing the number zero. The world has drawn this inference because we always bargain for the cheapest price even though the MRP would be the lowest of all.

Thus there is no harm in accepting that we are cheap people until it benefits others in a positive way.

Leena, I dont want to support you by heart but the facts.

India is not the cheapest country but might be cheap. Why?

Income: Talking about India but not as an individual Indian, there is a huge drag in per capita Income. No Job, No Work Sense, No Govt. Responsibility, No Education, No training Etc etc.

Policy: The Indian body dont hold the Indian people as the govt. responsibility for their health, values and society.

Behaviour : As far your point, I have to agree with you becoz, there no civic sense among the major part of India. People destroy and make dirty to the publics places and society like Railways/ Buses etc etc. The civic sense is poor or selfish and remain confined to their own.

Well on the right side declared about the talent. Do you know, In NASA mojority of the portion is occupied by the Indians, Why ? These is due to of non-availabilty of infrastructure and proper feild/lower level talent/work culture/ ethics/ system/politics in the team within India. Really some Indian peoples dont want the cheap in their team and moved away.

We hold big giants companies too. How many have the corporate or social responsibility? No, other then TATA. The big house like Reliance even shuttered their fuel pump stations at high crude levels. Do they fit in social system ? Question yourself ? Even Indian organisation don`t keep the employee rersponsibility too as in compare to world giants and vice versa with the employee who never concerns with the companies profit/loss. Only fit himself for his own salary.

Compare to average developed markets peoples I feel not all but an average indian is cheap.

This might be a short review, more can be disscussed.

India is a long enslaved country - enslaved of over a 100 years by the Britishers. Most are carrying forward the slavery tradition and calling it their culture. Slaves are cheap - I think yes. Indians are cheap in some aspects hence and are yet to catch up with the world. But there are educated Indians as well who have been able to break the shackles and have earned respect. The slow is change and your question is socio-psychological. As the talent of Indians shows up in the world and as India grows in wealth and health - and either exposes itself to better developed countries or understands that we are following a slavery system and mindset left on us by Britishers - Indians will have a better future for themselves. Right now - the answer depends on whom you ask.

Yes, We are cheap, in the sense that so far we do not discharge our liability to the society and expect the elected government to do all the work, it is going to be cheap. We as citizens, do not elect the right person as our representative, even after 64 years of independece. even today cast, reginalism, language play more than that of real development. And so far as we cannot hold our elected representetives responsible for their ommission and commission every Indian's life is going to be treated as cheap.

Leena,  To say "Indians are cheap" is certainly an overstatement.

Many Indians especially, those in hunt for quick Gold or lust for position of power, belong to this category is a truth.

Yet there is another India, known as "Bharat", that certainly is the richest and forever continues to be most modest. This India is hardly known to those swimming in shallow.

Just go over to rural India where a person hardly making enough to live the day is still willing to offer a cup of tea and offer help, to a complete stranger. Such magnanimity can only come from the richest souls and may surely not be available in such counts, to several so called rich nations.

Ms Leena, You might heard from lots of people that Indians are Cheap the reason is they don't know even themselves what they are and how they are Chep, because puting a blame on any one in this planet it looks like you are ignoring your skillet and most important thing is while Pointing someone four fingers are with you. Keep in Mind Well. I would say no one cheap in this world, the only thing people make cheap is all situation and surrounding environment.

@Neha, I am so sorry to contradict you. You are looking at the darker side. Look at the following figures As many as 12% scientists and 38% doctors in the US are Indians, and in NASA, 36% or almost 4 out of 10 scientists are Indians. 34% employees at Microsoft, 28% at IBM, 17% at Intel and 13% at Xerox are Indians. Indians run some of the key businesses within Microsoft, with at least half-a-dozen of them among the top 25 out of the company's 95,000-strong workforce. Do you want more statistics to show you the other glittering side. It is we the Indians passionate enough to criticise the homeland.

I don't know whether to laugh or not on Miss. neha's Statement. She claims that Indians are easily corruptible and those who say Indians are not cheap are frog in the well. The very fact she claims that Indians are ones that are easily corruptible shows that she dont know the exploits of MNC's in Africa or she dont know that how many indians hold high post abroad due to their integrity in business. every society in world today partly either corrupts or corruptible. At least we can say that largest nationality in the earth which holds most non corruptible people. even though media says otherwise as Indian media highlights more negative than positive to the world. Please Neha, come and live in Indian villages where you can find people who live for values than for money. people who jump countries for the sake of more money cant judge that the whole country is like that.

This shows the debility of our mind and lacks self respect. Working for less remuneration when compared to others ca not be termed as cheap mentality of the personality. It is ridiculous to support the argument on yes said

What kind of a question is this?? Is there a price tag to the citizen of a country??? What would you call a person living in Cambodia? Or Alaska? Or .... No ones cheap! Its the behavior that determines a persons character. Cheap is just an adjective.

Someone working in the Non-Indian company can only post such unpatriotic postings. How cheap it is that because of some so called glamorous but hollow traditional masses are getting us such derogatory ideas.

WE Indians are by no means cheap, in fact we are rich in every respect, earlier Indians were financially not very sound now we have over come that barrier also. We are in fact people with very rich culture and that very fact culture makes us the richest people in the world. But the saddest part is that the kind of message that goes out from the government makes the world out side believe that we Indians are cheap people. it is high time that the Government has its P.R. set right.

Yes we are altogether a people with rich culture.

We learnt cheap business tricks with early day traders. chinese, romans and arabs

We learnt meanness and false ego from british

we learnt cheap labour and money minded behaviour from our slavery days of british.

It's a pity most of the people are yet to come out of slavery.

Who needs your chemically loaded deodorant brenda. How many cultures in the world welcome guest by pasting sandal paste in hand, supari to mouth and sprinkling of rose water on you.

You may critize the use of hands in eating as we can criticize your use of paper in toilets.

Leeana, Please specify you mean cheap in behaviour or earnings

if you can ask this. Someone can ask. Are Australian  are cheap? are English people are cheap? and for other countries. Every person at Individual level know how he or she is? This is not a matter of community or Country. Every Country in the world has some cheap people and many good people so the system is working. if all the people will be cheap, What will be the situation. and pls try to think positive. i saw that if someone think about these things he will be like these.

you know that thoughts create human.

we should not use cheap word for ourselves it shows negativity.Secondly if some people feel that our progress is very slow or in some areas we need tremendous improvement then they should think of their contribution also. Instead of debating on this cheap word, better we debate on the points which are making us down or slow. HOW TO OVERCOME THAT, WHAT & HOW A COMMON MAN CONTRIBUTE IN THIS REGARD.

It is would not be right to call Indians cheap. Actually we(Indians)are known as the people who are well cultured and disciplined. It is because of being well cultured, educated, disciplined that the India economy is competing with the world leaders.

I truly agree with vipin. We are the most cultured humans in the world following moral ethics at all costs. It is not right to consider indians cheap by taking into consideration, a few stand-alone incidents. The whole world wants our help to make progress in their respective countries. Obama's visit to India is a shining example of dependence of the developed countries on India for their progress.

Look .... perhaps a small section of Indian enlightened class  has become nervous to see rise of India when others are falling. Questions often appear here like these :

-- is Indians are corrupt  by birth ?

-- is Indian Govt hospitals are worst in the world ? etc etc

But what is wrong ? Whtat is disturbing us ? "They" may not be top for ever. They have once ruled and now this is our turn.

What prevents us to accept that India is now one of the world leaders - others may require to leave space for us.

Now, it is irrelevant whether " Indian people were / is cheap" . Tell "them" we are coming to conquire the world by :

--  cheap tolerance, love, brotherhood

--  cheap way of thinking ( though the best in the world), cheap labour cost ( it is our advantage) etc

No. Not all indians are cheap. We are not utilising our talents for the sake of india. Our indians are very talented persons in any field comparing to other countries, but we are selling our talents to develop other countries for the sake of earnings. One should think of his own country and its development at the same time of his family. If everyone thinks in this manner, our country will be in first position to other countries.

I am proud to live between Indian. Those who think Indian people are cheap shows their cheap thinking... And if they really think so then i request them to leave India and settle in a country where people are very costly. Else at least read about Indian History... As all fingers of our hands are not similar therefore no two people can be of similar type.

If any one think Indian people as cheap then take step and help to bring revolution. Its easy to point but its difficult to come out with the solution. Please point out if u have proper solution for the same case.

India and its citizens are known for their kind and helpful nature, generosity, Down to earth nature, and many more.

IN NO WAY, BY ANY PARAMETER OF ASSESSMENT,NONE IN THE WORLD CAN DARE CALL US SO.WE HAVE AN INCOMPARABLE, VERY RICH CULTURAL ARCHITECTURAL,LINGUAL,HERITAGE WHICH WE CAN BE PROUD OF.EVEN FROM THE MEDIEVAL DAYS TILL DATE WE ARE FAR AHEAD OF VARIOUS COUNTRIES IN EVERY WALK OF LIFE.WE ARE NOT SECOND TO ANY ONE FROM WHICHEVER PART OF THE WORLD HE/SHE COMES FROM.VERY NICE TO SEE SO MANY NETIZENS HAVE FIERCELY VENTILATED THEIR EMOTIONAL FEELINGS.ISOLATED INCIDENTS OF FEW INDIVIDUALS SHOULD NEVER BE GENERALISED.

Indians are not cheap.

Indians have rich culture. Bondage, Family systems.

All these things money can not purchase or give. Even if money give it is artificial.

We are more patient, tolerating,understanding.

Are Sardarjis stupid ?

Let us not have stereotypes ; some Indians may be cheap ; an equal number of Americans , British , French , or any other nationality may be cheap. This does not mean that Indians as a race are cheap.

Indians hold posts of honour in several countries where they have settled ; they have contributed by way of their education , knowledge , skills ,...

I am proud to call myself an Indian ; Indian culture is one of the oldest , and one of the most magnificent , both in terms of ideas and practical achievements. India has given the world yoga , Classical dance , and classical music. These will live forever.

Indians are more are asset to the world today, in most sectors you will find an Indian working, remember he is the cheapest being to get the work done.

Culture shock is there but who isnt following? Human spirit and the ability to withstand the pressures is more, sometimes too much.

Never matter Indian men and women are beautiful and intelligent. so thumbs up
