It is seen tha young Indian professionals are focussing too much on a salaried job than who should be putting their "heart and soul" into the job, be able to certify their work themselves and not always switch jobs in search of higher. And with all the recession that was out there, and also many times we see people suddenly shifting from one company to another just because there was a higher package..

Most of us on toostep are employees belonging to one or the other company, what do you see in your company, are Indian professionals too focussed on salaried jobs? share your views people.

Hi Kriti,

Just for the sake of a healthy discussion, let me go with a NO!

Being money minded is one thing and then being ambitious and motivated is other. I feel that Indian professionals are instead, driven by competition and are constantly hungry to break from the stereotype work. While we are learning our job, as soon as we master it, we get drained and start looking forward to shoulder more responsibilities.

At the same time, blame it on the employers who take a really long time (and calculation) to actually muster up the courage to take any risk on any promising employee. This often results in demotivation and makes the 'Indian Professional' look for another job. I have spoken with many employees in several companies about what keeps them glued to their job and trust me, almost most of them say - 'A NEW DAY'. Of course, this doesn't mean that they do not need more money, but have you thought about how many companies in India actually appraise twice or more a year or give higher raise as compared to the INDIAN INDUSTRY STANDARDS!!?

I was actually having this discussion the other day in my company and we concluded with - A native US Citizen can work happily as a JAVA Developer for even 10+ yrs but an Indian JAVA Developer would prefer being a JAVA LEAD or PM by the same time!

I say yes. We Indians are infact groomed right form college or before that a job is what'd give them a good life. Everyone therefore seems to get conditioned to that idea. Once settled in an industry and once gotten used to getting a pay end of each month, they get used to it and be sucked deep into the system.

Many complain that they'd do sth better, but very few We see very few rebelling this idea and look for a new career or start a business of their own. I'm one of those, u c!!

Ya its the reality . The youth runs behind money , rather than concentrating on their career growth. Every Organisation emphasizes its salary structure on the individual's performance. And one has to relize that the salary increases with experience & good performance.

Its true, the vast majority opt for the comfort of salaried job. The reason for choosing this option are many, but one simple reason is Less Risk.

No company will pay for incompetent employees so unless the employee performance well he cannot be paid what he demands. So the motive is keep performing well and demand more.

This is all gonna happen with the young professionals because for whom the job doesnt comes with perquisites & other benefits will defenitely go for a fat salary paying job and there is nothing wrong about it. At the same time, they have to make sure that the quality service & expertise is rendered time to time.

On the othere hand, employers are hunting for cheap hiring with lot of task to the professional, so as long as the quality of thier service is good there isnt any harm to look for more money and as far as switching of job is concerned after a certain age and period they realise the meaning& importance of stability and security.

Yes.And with a valid reason !.I feel that for indians Security in terms of money has been important since our tradition takes too much importance to see that the children are into safe jobs before letting them out and constantly brain washed into building a house, saving for rainy day etc right from childhood

For Indians a house is a achievement. It is quite different from western world where teenagers are on their own ,do part time jobs and go on to make themselves one in the world.

In india Part time jobs are close to zero and the job conditions are different.Comparing both worlds Indians do look at salary as main thing.(helps in times of recession)

Anyway we all know Mr Narayana Murty's Famous statement'Dont love the company becoz you really dont know when the company will stop loving you"

I think yes most of them are focussing on just the money what they get from the job and not what they really learn on the job, and what it takes to do the job, but always money minded, and hence keep on changing from one place to another just in search of few bucks more, but then by doing this they will not be learning anything, and by the time they learn something they will be another company doing the same thing. and nothing new, and this will infact create a monotonous situation where one is doing the same thing day in and day out, and this has a very less shelf life than the other way around where one learns and understands all the aspects of the job and who i think is a true professional according to me.

Viewing the problem from another perspective may give a better solution,

The satisfaction from the job is a factor that the HR's normally are not interested to hear from the employees, but they just like to conclude its another better package that is taking out their resources. The attrition rate will be (may) always higher in any company which employs the talented ones, and also the talented never leaves there if they are having so said satisfaction form the job. The thing is, satisfaction from a job varies from individuals to individuals, for some it will be money that matters, while for some it will be the amenities that the co provides and for some others it will be the job that they are performing, the knowledge they are gaining, the team they are working with etc etc... There are so many such causes which could be identified by the resource management team of the company.

Here the argument is projecting only the money(package) cause, hence my attempt is to make an insight to the other notifiable factors which have more or equal importance than so said running behind higher salary.

In my opinion we people definitely work for money but in an urge to do so we are not concerned only about pay package only but also to work in a good company and a good job profile. Since same is the case with companies as they are also in the market to mint money then why not individuals. We saw all these things during recession when companies were not in need of its employees and asked the employees to leave without notice period (many companies did this) and now when scenario has actually changed, the companies have started recruitment again.

Kriti I beg to disagree with what you trying to prove here and more importantly the words you have used to portray that. I would like to add few points for you to consider just for the sake of healthy discussion

1. "Most of them are focusing on just the money what they get from the job and not what they learn from the job."

There are lot of things to be learnt in life viz art, philosophy, drama, sociology, psychology, pure science, history and many more but if you notice invariably most of the people end up doing only professional courses and that includes you and me and many more just on this site itself. You may call it coincidence. Now lets concentrate on job we can be a social worker joining NGOs,reformers like Medha ,child activist, scientist but again you see the coincidence most of us land up in jobs like engineer,HR professional,Doctors etc etc.So even after this if we profess that we have joined this job for anything but money would be anything but true.

2."They keep on changing from one place to another in search for few bucks but then by doing this they will not be learning anything".

As I have already cleared the myth that we are not working for money so there is no reason within the limits of natural human logic to stay in a place which is paying you less for the same job (as You have told they do same job in next company) for which you can be paid more.Another problem in your assumption is that only the first company provides all learning avenues while all other consecutive companies do the same job day in day out.Third point is world is a smarter place to live in,nowadays and nobody is going to pay you more unless you deserve it.I do have some faith in HR.

3." One learns and understands all the aspects of job and who I think is a true professional."

I appreciate your novel definition for a true professional but again here to I have a problem.Just consider a small case study:

Mr. Monotonus joined a Heavy Machineries company as a design engineer trainee. After four years he graduated to a design engineer.he continued to learn and after another 10 years became a Senior design a engineer. After another 10 years senior chief design engineer.

Mr. Versatile  also joined the same  Heavy Machineries company as a design engineer trainee.after four years he was shifted to quality. After another 10 years to manufacturing and finally next 10 years in supply chain management.

Now, who should be the CEO of the company.I am sorry I would select not so professional Mr. Versatile for the obvious reasons.

I do not fully agree with this argument. Young professionals are leveing abrod for money, since the working envioronment is not healthier.here in India people unworthy of thier seats are on TOP.Talanted Young are not given due promotions.Look at the family owned big and middle level companies. So they leave and join professional companies for higher salaries.Tkae for expmple our RD system in India, Ony 5% of the company have R&D system and encourage Scientist. Salaries of Young Scientist are very low compared to other devloping Nations in the WORLD. that is why people leave companies often.
