Though Indian telecom operators have changed the existing global model for mobile applications where the market is dominated by handset makers led by Apple. Customers are making thousands of downloads everyday resulting in lot of revenue generation. Telcos enjoy the proximity to the customers and can offer apps based on the requirements.

In India, the highest downloads are from Tier II states, such as Gujarat and Rajasthan. Third, while apps are primarily downloaded by smartphone users globally, here we find that a majority of the customers use a basic handset. The downloads pattern indicate that subscribers were essentially using applications to convert their feature handsets into smartphones.

So users, are mobile applications the new revenue generator for teleco's in India?

Mobile applications indeed are the new revenue generator in India. Users these days are addicted to new-new telecom features coming in the market and thus they always want to be updated with them. May be its song, video, wallpaper, games, slide show or any other applications, users are always interested in staying updated with the latest feature because of which they always keep on downloading and filling of service provider's pockets. This they also do with the handset models which results in the handset company's revenue generation.

Mostly mobile applications are presented in smartphones and In India, due to poor infrastructure, the penetration of smartphone is very less. Due to its high cost, not everybody is able to buy it. So, I don't think in the near future, also mobile applications can become the revenue generator of telecos. It still has a long time to go.

Smartphones and mobile apps go hand in hand, as pointed out by Radha, and it is the elite few who can afford it. Though the fancier phones and the apps which go with them, are good for brand building for Telecos it is the basics, such as Voice and SMS VAS products, which will continue to bring in the maximum revenues for them. Simplicity of usage would continue to appeal to Masses who matter in the overall Revenue Generation. Thanks from me too for including me in the debate :-)

Mobile apps is not new. Its the idea of having all the required or currently most used apps on a single phone that is new. I mean marketeers are using Facebook and Twitter and calling it a facebook phone or twitter phone et al!!

Look at the category of phones that are sold here in India. is it the Blackberry or the Smartphones?? Neither. Its the music phones that are sold the maximum. So as rightly pointed out by Radha it has a long way to go in India!! Thanks for the referral! :)
