Recently, a top Egyptian cleric has issued a fatwa against it saying Muslims using such cyber platforms must be considered "sinners". He also termed the use of networking sites such as 'Facebook' as anti-Islamic and blamed such sites for growing incidents of marital discords in the country.

Noted Sunni scholar Sheikh Abdel Hamid al-Atras, former head of the fatwa commission at prestigious Al-Azhar University here, issued the fatwa saying such sites have resulted in rise of the marital infidelity. The fatwa came after a study earlier this week claimed that one in every five cases of divorces in Egypt had been caused after one of the partners started using social networking sites such as Facebook.

So users, do you think social networking sites are destroying cultures?

Unfortunately yes. Though these sites were developed for connecting people from far off places to come in touch, make friendships and share business, but people are misusing it these days as a result of which it is becoming an instrument to destroy family because it encourages spouses to have relations with other people which break Islamic Sharia law. While one or other of the spouses is at work, the other is chatting online with someone else, wasting their time and flouting the Sharia. This endangers the Muslim family. Also, it is not correct to have relations with others spouses either with direct contact or through phone or internet. It is also a waste of time, and the girls and the womens are chatting to the people to whom they don't know which is completly wrong.

Responsibility lies with the user. Knife was not invented to cut throats. Majority of users participate in social networking sites to interact, share views and enhance knowledge.

The only culture that I see social networking sites are destroying are the work culture. Most people seem to be on Orkut , facebook etc most of the time :( .They keep needing a break from work - and eventually they work a little  - to take a break from stress of social networking ;)

I don;t think so that the social networking sites are destroying culture, its the easy way of communication  and staying in touch with people, it is a  tool where we can find a person whom we are genuinely searching for months and years. It;s the tool which builds relationship, but only when used properly.

If it were a bad concept how would I have seen your views and tried to answer you.

Perception matters over here and try to grasp good from bad and see the changes within - Roses too have thorns/Lotus blooms in muddy water.

I think that no one can change your value, beliefs, ethics, culture...or anything without your agreement. It is you who is ready to change...... As per my view Social networking sites provide a place where any one with any background can participate and discuss on any topic and get many answer for a single question.

Social networking sites or any other techonology can 'destroy' our culture as it has been dramatically posed. Preserving culture is an individual's responsibilty. No one can force you into letting go of your values or cultural traditions. This is like implying if you are handed a gun then automatically the person has to started mass murder. Advancement and especially techonological progress comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages...Make yourself sensible and matured enough to use these tools responsibly.

Social networking sites are definitely not destroying our cultures. They give us an opportunity to stay connected and get in touch with our past friends, colleagues. It is only upto the user how they are using it. Every thing has pros and cons. So it is better to educate people and implement policies and practices to avoid negative usage of social networking sites.

This is totally absurd, every technology has its good and bad uses. Its individuals responsibility to tackle with it, how can it be sin. Through social networks many good deeds human can do. Even last month they condemned fatwa against the practice of using Quranic verses as the mobile ring tones terming it as "improper" as it compromises the sacredness of the religious scriptures. Then Yahoo messenger/Google talk and then Cell phone and then IE, Firefox, Chrome, Youtube will join the list of 'sinners' tools.
