I think that SOME and only SOME of these sites can be helpful and/ or good for business. You just have to be careful of which sites that you sign up for. Because many of them don't cater to the business crowd. Many of them are just focused on party-goers, the younger crowd or music related etc...

It's not wise to try and be on all of these types of sites, just pick the ones that you think would benefit you most. But depending on the ones that you decide to be on, some of them can be good for business.

I agree that social networking sites are good for doing business but not sites like Orkut, Facebook, MySpace etc, but it is sites like LinkedIn, TooStep etc, which will be helpful. So make sure you make a right choice.

With that statement I can't agree. Social websites are great for business! Announcements and specially the means to attract loads of web traffic makes it an excellent business medium for my profession. Facebook only is responsible for 30% of web traffic to my websites. Better even then Google.

And Facebook communities are also an excellent way to build a community of 'fans', which increases revenue.

Yes, these sites help the employees to get rid of the stress. But at the same time, there should be restrictions. Some companies have come out with Social Networking policies, which is the way to go. Most likely, the employees should be motiviated to use Social networking sites for a limited period in a day, may be not more than 30 mins in an 8 hour day.

Of course they are very good medium for doing business. The websites are completely full by youngsters who can be a very easy target markets. Networking sites like Facebook is the leading social networking sites with maximum amount of users. They are most popular among youngsters, have an access in majority of the countries have the largest number of user base. If used properly, will surely give a very good marketing medium for an organisation...

Depending on what business you are in you could chose a site.Ultimately since all business boils down to sales and all sales happens between people,social networking sites can be good platforms for business.How good they are for business depends on how creative you are in using them

I agree with you Renee. One has to exercise his/her own judgment and take a call. It would be unproductive to be on all social media sites and trying to be everything to everyone. Know thyself and communicate yourself unambiguously.

Every coin has two sides and you have to see the other side too. If you have contacts then you can get the real details later as per your needs. Atleast you know some people.

These sites help you to make contacts and it is your contacts which matter in a business. Si I feel that these sites are a good way to expand your business.

I think most of the social networking site are giving spy services. It attacks on the user data and send you those sites which are of your interest moreover it also share your email id and we start getting spam. once you approve any user request or you join a group your email account is open to spammers. if you c the matrimonial sites(also used as dating sites) and you share your information and you pay them then also ur email will be shared to spammers and once you close the account you will start getting anonymous mails from spammers saying you to join the site again. Even these days its been heard chinese networks are spying the government computers by using such sites which just collects system passwords and also your data is shared with them. Even few days back I read some where Twitter is also spying other countries. once these sites know the mentality of users from particular location they provide such survey data to MNC's and then they get idea of that community. The sponsors of such sites always get benefit and share such data with other countries.
 This is how the social and professional networking site are working. the future of collecting knowledge is to be used in Artifical intelligence where computer will become your administrator human will no more be useful for anything. I would suggest you all to remove your photograps if you have fixed it on your profile and also hide your personal no and emails.

Most of the time the information provided on such sites is fake and you can't do business with fake people. So I oppose the motion that such sites are good for doing business.
