I agree with Neelima that Technical writers are the first people in most of the companies to get the pink slips in the event of cost cutting. It may because the contribution made by TWs is often ignored or looked down by the concerned companies.

We couldn't arrive at a conclusion in this topic, since it involves a lot other factors too. It is not the matter of concern, whether the person with particular skill is important for the organization or not. It is highly the responsibility of the particular person to prove his/her performance and make the management feel that their service is very much needed for the organization's growth.

This crisis has given us a lot of lessons. People from many domains are moved out of the company by the name of layoff. But how far they have given their max performance is always a question. These kind of layoffs should motivate each and everyone to give better performance, rather than blaming the market and recession.

And i think it is always better to specialize in a particular domain, like Telecom, Semiconductor, etc and build the career with a focus, than to be very conventional, which will always take us higher n higher.

Thanks,

John Rambo

Technical writers are recognized based on their domain (Telecom, Retail, Finance) expertise and knowledge. With the growing IT challenge and demand, technical writers in Semiconductor Industry, Research Centers etc., collaborate and work close with SME's and Knowledge Guru's.

"As a technical writer it is our responsibility to prove how important we are to the company"

I definitely second the idea. Recently the company that I work in (also an IT company) was acquired by yet another IT firm. Being an Editing Support team member under Global Sales Enablement we (as a team) apprehended a job cut. However, the new management decided our worth when it came to delivering the quality of proposals which we ensured as a team. So, on that note, documentation, is a job that only dedicated personnel can do. Consider SMEs who write; it's not something they enjoy doing right? Similarly, proposals are often written by experts who write not by choice but as people who have been asked to write. A shabby job on manuals can lessen productivity in the team. As technology companies, whether IT or semiconductors or telecom the importance of a good documentation cannot be ruled out! No wonder in India it is expected that with more and more innovations in technology the demand for writers is going to grow exponentially.

But, people in organizations are not aware about their working which actually doesnot allow them to be recognized for their work in companies and grow.

No, technical writers are not recognized in Software Firms, they are the ones who are sacked out first when organisation is planning to cut cost. And I agree with Mr.Anand Rajaraman that "As a technical writer it is our responsibility to prove how important we are to the company".

" PROVING URSELF IMPORTANT / WORTH FOR A FIRM, NO MATTER WHICH DOMAIN YOU BELONG TO, THAT DOMAIN WILL BE RECOGNIZED BECAUSE OF U  "
