Yes Sarika, you are right I have seen parents who thinks if her/his child speak engisg then they can grow much better. Once I went to one shop there is aquarium on the table. One lady ask her 2-3 yrs old daughter pointing to fish, "Beta, isse kya bolte he?" Girl replied,"Machhali".I got surprise by reaction of that lady. Her reaction like,"How many times I told you not to speak in Hindi, you should give answer in English only."

I do not know how can people be proud saying that they do not know their mother tongue. Also, it has become a matter of pride when the youngsters say that they do not read news papers. Things have to change rapidly. Before talking about patriotism, let us do all these basic things right. Regards, Anna George, Web Analyst, Nichepro Technologies. Bangalore. http://www.nichesuite.com/

The trend of English speaking and a hatred for our mother has affected our society adversely. The people using English in their day to day life are supposed to be superior to their non English speaking counterparts. A man who is a gold medalist of languages like Hindi, Sanskrit etc is supposed to be inferior to those who are fluent in English. The hatred for mother tongue is so deep-rooted that modern parents use to talk in English with their children, this has resulted in the development of a population which is totally ignorant about the richness of their own language. I`m not in against of learning English but it should not be learnt at the cost of local languages.

Hi Manoj, I agree with sarika's point. See our government has to take an initiative to make it happen.I wont say even children only talk in english as bad becoz,we dnt have an importance of our basic language. What we will do with our indian language.Remember we are slave to english ( Foriegner ) till date. Nothing can be done by debating this.

Yes,we have almost lost it.I just remember a famous dialog from Amithab bachchan's movie that "I can talk English, walk English".Same is the case with us.English has come in our habit so much that we have forget to speak Hindi.Second point is about the mindset of our generation that without English one can't succeed. From the day a child is born, parents become conscious about his career and want him to get admission in English medium school.Speaking Hindi is like a sin for the youth, the person speaking Hindi is looked as uneducated. We are loosing it Guys, loosing it

The influence of other dominant languages required to sustain in the flat commercial world is having impact on the quality of our "Mother Tongue". We speak our language but have lost the proficiency which our parents, yesteryear Novelists, literary community earlier exhibited in their daily life. I believe its a evolution of Language, some will sustain and many more will have its natural death.

Nowadays when a person talks in his mother tongue in a work place he is treated or seen cheaply by others. English not only became a dominant language but its recognised as a status symbol in our country. Its necessary to learn many languages at the same time we have to safe guard our mother tongue. Mother tongue is what nature bestowed upon you, we have not done anything great to speak that dialect. The beauty lies in understanding the language thoroughly and disseminate the languages without polluting the very nature of the language is something that every individual try and protect. We have become so colloquial, and some of the utterances are not there in the original script. Therefore, mother tongue should be guarted, protected and disseminated in its entirety without dissecting the language any more and to be protected for eternity!

We are victims of circumstances. There is no point in blaming anybody! Think of the child of a father on transferable job.As per local state rule,a child has to learn the local language in addition to all other subjects.Think of his plight, with every transfer of his father to every non-hindi state, he will be burdened with a new state language which he will never use/ come across in future!Forget the issue of Mother tongue.Even one of the richest of Indian language which brought the first Nobel Prize of the country, does not exist anywhere! If a language cannot bring you money, it can not survive; it is a question of the survival of the generation. Why not think of your mother first? Hordes of boys are leaving our shores; how many of them bother about their own mothers? Thanks.

Is it Possible to lose Mother tounge for a person? Lets Take an Example, The Indian Who went to foreign countries and their child born their, Can We say foreigner for them? They are called NRI. The Genes Never leave anybody. Even When we make hybrid plants in Biology. Then can anything can leave their base, The proportion can be different. but losing is not possible. Also There is an Interesting thing, the proportion is different but base is base. so you will always find a support from them. like NRI Will also support the India. So the roots can never cut. :-)

We are not France or Germany to pump tonnes of money into "mother tongue". Our priorities are different. It is because of this mother tongue worship that the word "India" is a joke because we have some 1000 plus mother tongues. Only a self sufficient country can pay attention to the word called "mother tongue".

The purpose of language is to communicate. Language should help to express emotions, but having emotions for a language doesn't make any sense. Concept of "mother tongue" is way over rated at this point of human kind's evolution. Universal language is a far better ideal.

I don't agree with this ,because it depends on individuals perception. we should keep it in mind that if a person has a liking for a language he /she will learn it .Moreover the present day scenario is such that to communicate globally one has to be proficient in the language which is global.and by default that language is English. now it is upon us to make our mother tongue 'Hindi' a global language ,which would force not only us but citizen of other country to make it their primary language for communication

English happens to be a business language hence it is been increasingly used, that in no way suggests that we are losing our mother tongue..indian languages have stood the test of time and adopted themselves to the needs of the present scenario and have survived.. we need not get panicky, instead we must make our languages operational business languages if and where possible and they will survive.. Yes the purity of the languages have reduced with increased usage of english interludes in between.. NO we aren't losing them!!!

It is difficult to define the conditions when one can say that mother tongue is lost. But still, I would say it is not that we are losing our mother tongue as majority of indians are still very smart to communicate through their mother tongue and at least with their family members and close friends. However, people are now a days using english very commonly but still there is enough opportunity for one to conversate in their mother tongue. So, I dont think that we are losing our mother tongue. Yes i agree that after approximately 20 years, we may lose our mother tongue significantly.

A macro view: When India got freedom, the politicians had followed the footsteps of British government in every aspect. There is no prudence in deciding the economy policy at macro level as well as micro level. They did not follow the Great leader Gandhiji also who advocated rural based economy. I strongly belive this should be the cause for the current economic scenario in which the educated community is more dependent (they could not think on their own, no cultural preferences, no affection towards anything, no importance to MOTHER TONGUE and only MONEY is the matter for this urban India.)
Kindly note: This is not only the real India. We are not losing our mother tongue. We are not allowing the people from the rural India to grow eventhough they are potential but we brand them that their communication is not good. (their real problem is not communication but English proficiency). Please help them. thanks Senthilkumar

No, I do not think so because most of the populations live in rural areas and they speak and write in their mother tongue. It is true that in cities particularly metro cities the persons speak in English being comfortable in this language. But at home or persons of same mother tongue speak in their mother tongues. It is also possible that these persons are not able to write correctly in their mother tongue specially Hindi in metro cities.

I would say we are changing our mother tongue... and as proof, all of us, are able to share ideas and understand each other cause we have a unified language. The debate can be viewed from both sides of the coin and none will be the looser. However i do not know of any other language which can be understood in NEWS - North East West and South not only in our nation but across few other nations as well.

Yes we are losing it but does it matter. Leave mother language ...talk about national language. National language is a language which every1 in its nation knws and use as a common language to communicate..And I guess Hindi is the one..everyone over here has used English to share deir thoughts. Why none of u have used hindi or ur mother tongue to communicate. Even if we are losing it doesnt matter. We should hv a sufficient knwledge of common language via which we can share our feelings and emotion to every1 rather den having so many languages...

All languages have their own beauty: mother tongues or father tongues. What is essential is to have a sense of regard for all languages including one's own language. The tendency to rely too much on English may not be bad because, like it or not, it is the international language of business and commerce. But knowing one's own tongue be it Marathi or Bengali may be a source of eternal pleasure as linguists tell us that we may speak any language but we think in our own tongues.

Dear Manoj, This is a great topic you share here with all of us and thanks from heart. As per the everyday and each second variation in scenario and education in India changes the way of living standard, thinking, language, eating habit, way of talking and etc. But side by side we are loosing our self and left behind the language. You are discuss here that we are loosing language our Mother Tongue "Hindi" which is the base of our making us and our identity. Yahan par bhi hum jab koi baat ya ideas share kartey hai tu english hi use kartey hai lekin Hindi ka prayog koi nai karta. Woh isliye kyunki humein english ko use kartey samay abhimaan mehsoos hota hai. Lekin hum aaj bhi Hindi ka prayog apney circle mein use kartey hai. It is not important that we are loosing our mother tongue but we are using less because 98 percent of population in world using english for business purposes, education or anything. Especially English use in Tourism Industry which the upper most way of Income of a country. We are using English because of earning and make our network. Hindi always be in our and Indians can never loose their Mother Tongue even it grows more than USA. Our identity is from Hindi and we are "Hind Desh ke Waasi Hai". Thanks

Thanks for the referral Ms Sarika, Linguists say that Mother tongue is a language in which we can Talk, Explain and Understand. Along with this, it is a language in which we can Think, Dream and Curse. A lot of people amongst us are able to do this in more than one language. Mother tongue to most of us is a language which was spoken by our ancestors and is usually spoken by us. I think we are not loosing our Mother tongue, but are acquiring other languages.
