I don't think any relegion is more superstitious or less superstitious than the other. I learned the slogan 'mother saw father wearing the turban on Sunday' from my father, we are christian and this is used to check the Rahukalam. We even had our Jathakams derived by Pandits. Before every marriage date being fixed both the brides and bridegrooms families sit together and use the above slogan to come to an auspicious time for the marriage when to get out from home for the marrage ceremony so that the Rahukalam won't come in way. In marriage ceremonies we don't use the Christian marriage dress or the long cloak, the bride in almost marriage use the saree and 'mantrakodi' which again is another saree. The pendent used for tiying the marriage knot still bears the hindu shape but with a cross in it instead of the krishna or flower symbol. Taditional lamps are used even now after wedding to be lighted by both the groom and the bride as starting point of their journey together and so goes on the Indian tradition. So I have to say nobody need to blame the other for of relegious charecteristics of superstion, it is just traditions, one people value as it is passed on for generations and everywhere it is there irrespective of relegious believes.

I won't lie, as we grow up in a Hindu family so, obviously we do tend to stick to some weird superstitions. For example, my father died on Tuesday so, my mother doesn't let me trim off my nails, cut hair or anything, says even to sty vegetarian at least a day of the entire week...:D

Yes, We are superstitious! Who this "WE" - represent educated elite or over 70% semi-literates and illiterates live in villages! If the term "We" implies 30% then we are not superstitious, but 70% of our population is superstitious, because it is very difficult to take them out of "Dogmas", "irrational belief" and "Prejudices"!

No, despite the rise in superstition from neighboring countries like Japan, Hong Kong, where they practise black magic, Feng Shui, etc, we have emerged out of that era. We don't believe in things that are beyond our conscious awareness. But in the rural areas, magic, spells, and the dark side of spirituality are still rampant.

Nothing Wrong to implicate a few of our Gods/Goddesses also in our ventures provided we have done our initial work. Also look back at the reasons or the root of the superstition and you will find some scientific basis. The reason appears to be lost in time but the practice continues

Superstitions have become deep-rooted in our society much to the agony of logical thinking rationalists. The statutory warning for all things should be: “Think before you act.” Ok, here is a litmus test for all: 1. If a black cat or any cat for that matter goes from left to right or right to left, do you still continue with that confident stride? Or you wait for the other person/car/vehicle from other side to cross first? 2. You are terribly late for work, about to step out and at that very moment some-one sneezes from behind, what you do?- you wait a couple of seconds, or just go.. 3. Is your daily life governed by do’s and don’t for each day of the week? Like Monday, do not shave, Tuesday do not wash hair, Saturday, and do not buy oil, petrol or any thing made of iron? If your answer is “Yes” to most of the above questions, you are superstitious, if not congrats U’ve passed the litmus test, give your self a gift.

Yes, Still , we believe in this. Do not you see that, we look for a auspicious time to attend interview or to start constructing a house or to start a new venture. Like that, so many are ingrained in our mind by our religious leaders.

I can't imagine the way we Indians are, let me tell you my own story. I am manglik and the parents of every girl we find use do this kundli match and then other matches. In the end they simply say our girl is not manglik or if she is manglik then the gunns are not matching. I don't know wat difference it can create and I must say that we all are superstitious, those too who say we are open minded.

I strongly support this side. India is a very traditional country with our own cultures and rituals. We cannot stop our superstitious beliefs or else we cant deny all the superstitious things were just stupid. Every Indian has got this kind beliefs in his blood so its difficult to change it. Ms. Mallika one question to you if you are not yet married means will you keep your marriage on full Raghu kaal time?

Yes we do even today and will b followed. Eg. While leaving the house a cat crosses it is consider to b a bad omen. Some relief is that if it crosses from left to right and from right to left i have seen elders advising to stop for a while and then proceed. i personally believe that it all depends how one takes it.

We still have unravalled mysteries, certain dogmas proving right for many individuals who practice them, forces individuals to believe in superstition! Our cricketers, at times, follow certain mannerisms, on field and off the field, which they admit in public a mere superstition, yet they follow it! Not all superstitions are only myth, and not all myths are superstitions. In a free country like ours, superstition is also part of us in some form or the other! We tend to believe in certain acts for which we did not get proper logical and rational answers to - so long as this comprehension is brought about, we will continue to live in superstition for some years to come!

One would think that by the 21st Century that people would begin to think a little more scientifically. But there are still lots of educated people of India who believes in Superstitious like many cricketers , many bollywood stars and comman man also. Wearing different kind of gems and wearing particular colour dress on partcualr day it shows that still we are superstitious. What do you think?

Traditions are not superstitions , neither everything should be verified by science , to be accepted ,you enjoy literature , poetry , where someone's face is equated with moon etc , you r knowing by science how moon looks like , it is not that beautyfull , full of craters , but does that deprives you from enjoying poetry ? will u call the poet superstitious ? science is one among several methods of interpreting universe , and still it is not able to explain many secrets of life , consiousness, or universe , those r just beyond its scope , about astrology , it is not superstition , astrology is worth , it is known only when you encounter some problem in which it really helps , these traditions of Hinduism have deep spiritual truth .

Absolutely true Amit and we need more of you around. The history of christianism itself stands testimony to the fact that it was imposed rather than tried. What i mean is the christian invaders of yore conquered land not for materialistic wealth alone but also to spread their religion. In todays world they use better weapons like money to convert other people into their fold. Sometime back say 20 yrs or so we had a foregin woman visiting us at our house one evening with a yound kid and a baby in her arms. On the pretext of selling a book or something she wanted to breast feed her baby and we allowed her into our house. After she finished feeding the baby she slowly tried to converse with us politely and turned the conversation towards conversion. At which point my parents got up and firmly asked her to leave our house. Later on i witnessed nuns visiting poorer neighbourhoods aka slums and doling out cash and rice to the dwellers in return for their allegiance to christianity. They were renamed and the local church helped them in making new identity papers. These are real incidents and not stories ! And today the muslims are trying to do the same trhough brute force though because in any case they lack basic common sense in the first place. You were spot on when you said - we hindus are much better as we dont go around killing people for not converting to our religion. Or rather should we ? Our superstitions are our beleifs and no one has a right to laugh at them. Just yesterday i read that the Roma community (called gypsies) of Romania meet the first saturday after lent to sell their daughters and sisters in marriage to eligible grooms at a public gathering in bulgaria. It is done only for money but the date is considered as auspicious. It is done on the first sat after lent every year and has been happening for centuries. If that is not superstition what is ???

@ S. muralidharan Everytime Hindus beliefs are targetted by name of "superstitions" , when it is said "superstitious nation" it is meant "superstitious Hindu nation ", while truth is that there is some deep reason beneath many beliefs of Hindues , Hindus religion is based on very developed philosophy , you can easily differentiate betwen myth and spiritual truth , myth and superstition convey some deep truth , while in islam or chirstianity myth and spirituallity (if there is any) are intertwined , when it said world was created 4000 B.C. , or those who pray jesus only they will be saved, or there will be any "day of judgement " it s taken as "fact" by christians and not myth , belief is basis of their religion .

Superstitious relates to having blind beliefs or unreasonable faith.Up to some extent it is acceptable. But it should be noted that everything is built on confidence only and without which one can not do things. Unless one doesn't believe, he will not be able to achieve in his life. We believe our forefathers advises and guidance on certain matters which have been carried forward now and there should be some reasons for that and the reasons for which may not known to us. Even the facts on scientific reasons have been derived based on trial, error, and experimental method only. When comes to the poojahs/worship to God, we are reciting certain mantras to create the positive vibrations only. If one repeats the mantras again and again for several times, the positive energy/vibration has been generated. As a human being we have certain things beyond our control/sense and why during difficulties people are going to temples/churches/mosques to worship the God where people will get the positive energy and confidence to manage the difficulties in their life. Sometimes the intuition will help to sort out the problems. Thanks for the referral Mr.Virag Shah.
