In case you haven't noticed green retailing is in and if you are a retailer you need to be thinking green. I mean green as in alternative energies, conservation of energy, recycling and generally have procedures that are 100% environmentally friendly.

I am quite surprised with Shudhansu saying this from a global retailer like Target . Sailena you have a fair idea of what is sustainability . I  hope he  has seen or read Al- Gore prohecy and his facts on climate change .  The solar ice caps at melting in the artic and the sealevels are rising and if this becomes critical there wil be many  continents going under the sea levels . Yes setting up a windturbine or trapping carbon under the sea may have initial costs but the  if you calculate the payback after some time there are profits made . more important than profirs its the community or the human mankind you are saving . I hope our kids or our next generation dont go to school carrying Oxygen masks

Well Sudhansu, Can your counter-part in "Target's" country of origin or for that matter any Western Country take the same line of argument as yours on going green? This kind of double standars for the West & the East exposes the hypocricy of the Western MNCs, operating in the Eastern Corridor.

I agree with Mr. Charles. Starting recyclable materials,Durable cloth bags with their Advertisements and using paper bags instead of plastic packets can be a very good start.....

We need to start using cloth bags to the market instead of using plastic which is non recyclable

we should encourage retailers to start issuing Durable  cloth bags  with their Advertisements .

also small retailers also can encourage and chip in on the same

The cloth bags are even more green than paper bags they can be made by recycling jeans materials-will be very durable!!!!

I agree with ramesh that retailers should go green and for that they need to keep in mind the below things:

Reuse & Recycle - As a retailer, there are always opportunities to reuse things as well as recycle things. For example, retailers receive many boxes with packing materials that are often just tossed into dumpsters at the end of the day. There are times, however, when you need to send things out to customers or pack up purchased items to prevent possible damage. Rather than invest in your own packing materials, reuse what you receive from your own shipments

Lighting - Investing in efficient lighting for your store should be addressed from both a presentation perspective and an environmental perspective.

Eco Products - Whether it’s the paint on your walls, the floor you stand on, or the insulation keeping you warm, there are eco options that you can consider when planning for your retail space.

I don't agree with sudhanshu saying it costs more and everything, in the long run you will be paying less in the terms of electricity bills and infact you will be saving a lot and you will get a chance to look after your environment in which you happened to be living in it, so going green is a proper way to evolve in the retail industry as of now.

Yes my company is into green retailing and we have used alternative energies in the means of solar power for lights and other sources and by this we are cutting on the power consumption from the government and by this we are reducing the bills of power and by this we are contributing to the less greenhouse effect that has being caused everyday.

No right now we are not into green retailing it happens so that it costs more again to install all these solar panels, again there wil be more cost added to the setup, right now one can't afford the extra charges to go green.
