With the rise in competition retailers have come up with their own brands to compete with the manufacturer brands. Now the main problem arises with the consumers as they are confused with what to go with....... Many retail brands have come up with their brands that are equally good to manufacturer brands....

So, what would you choose?

To me, it all depends on the level of my association with the product, its usage and utility value

I would like to go for manufacturer brands only as I'm a brand loyal customer. And moreover I very much concerned about the quality of product or services I will get frm the private level brands....

Private Lables though not the first choice but depending the goodwill of the shop like Shopper Stop, it will work.

The progress will be slow but will build on the strength of the shop.

It really depends on the type of product, service or brand. On both sides there can be flaws.

Depends on the Quality, the convenience etcetera.. Like for example for curd (dahi) I prefer local curd to branded curd. It requires some guts to try first. but then if comfortable you continue. The unbranded/local then slowly metamorphises into branded. - Examples: Haldiram, Amway etc

I would rather prefer a private brand in certain but not in all categories of goods, preferably in essential commodities (refer HT business section 7th Feb'11, Delhi Edition).

Its a well known fact that manufactured goods are premiumly priced to recover their huge advertisement cost in promotions. As a well informed consumer, i know the quality of goods would be almost same in pvt labelled goods vis a vis manufacturer Goods, then why to spend more on the manufacturer brands.

As a matter of fact Manufacturer has realised this growing trend and continually decreasing their price to meet up the price of pvt labelled brand. Ultimately its a victory for END CONSUMERS.

You must look at the context. You must look at the goods under consideration.

1 The only  difference between an ISI Iron  or immersion rod and a non ISI item is in the Mica that is used as an insulant/conductor. In one case, it is imported and in the other, it is local

2. Things like toothpaste, soaps etc. it is a matter of personal choice- brands do not matter.

3. Now when it comes to the case of generic drugs, the story looks different. A high end, International company offers you a drug at an exorbitant cost The generic manufacturer gives one at a dirt cheap price. So you choose. This happened to me recently. I was suffering from some severe inflamatory infection - drugs from 3 doctors could not "cure" it. 4th chap prescribed a drug- "May be slightly expensive, (120/- per tablet) but try it for 5 days" (15 tab) and come back. Drug not available at shops. One shop suggested a generic equivalent (8/- per tab). Worked wonders

The average consumer cannot differentiate between Private or Manufacturer brands. Is the product needed? Is the quality satisfactory? "Then I'll buy it!" is what I would say.

But its not necessary being loyal to a brand, if u are presented with a better product u can always change. Change is permanent.

I would prefer manufactured brands because its got a good R&D as back up, assured quality, a name behind the product which can help the consumer to approach in case of any grievances with the product delivery or any issue that nags the consumer. There is also a expectation of a reply from the company.

A private label is manufactured in small scale sector or job worked to a third party for manufacture. Most of the private labels are me-too of a well established brands.

The advantage to the consumer is mostly on price or a scheme i.e. 1+1 free. Most of the products successful in the private label format are floor cleaning liquids ( a replacement to an unorganized phenol) and dish washing powders (which again is a replacement to an unorganized dish washing powder)

Manufacturer brands have an identity, which is one of the factors with reference to proof of its quality.

Yes Malladi when you buy a "Brand" you are risk free. At the same time think in case of garments they are being manufactured at the same place both for brand and private lables.

In fact the private lables at Shoppers or Life Style are good in all aspect with lesser price.

In case of consumer durables one should go only for "Brand" cements included. Private labels may be cheaper but not dependable at all in long run.

I prefer Manufacturer brands.

Ultimately has  the advantage of controll in design, research, cost control, immediate improvement of the brand whenever and whereever required.

The cost of the production is in the control of the manufacturers.

When the manufactrer is directly in touch with the market the distance between Manufactrer-seller-consumer is nil.

I SUPPORT YOUR VIEWS SINCE BRANDED GOODS HAVE QUALITY AND APART FROM THIS BRANDED GOODS ARE CONSIDERED AS LONG LASTING.

Yes I am going with Meena argument as a customer brand loyality plays a major part in our lives. Just 1 point to ponder over is also the category in which we would or intentd to buy a product.

Actually a tough one to answer. It depends on situations and the products you are looking at. Private label brands are cheaper to own but manufactured brands can always be relied upon. Most of the manufactured brands would not compromise on quality to a great extent while private label ones are suspect.

In a country where government machinery is corrupt and quality enforcement machinery is in primitive stage branded goods are better choice.
