Have we sufficiently worked with tapping of Solar and wind energy? Have we looked at the possibility of electricity from bio-waste? Are we investing in any research to find more alternates? Are we looking to ensure our buildings are eco-friendly and not energy guzzlers by design...etc....The questions may be many but we, in India are destined to copy paste technologies thanks to our good governance and enslaved thinking. Even mini hydro-electric pumps in hills and bio-mass electric units in plains can work wonders.

In your younger days when you were learning to ride a cycle, you would have possibly fallen down at least once and hurt yourself. Did you shun cycles after that for rest of your life. No right ! Its the same with nuclear energy - due to certain accidents, we shouldnt shun it rather learn from the mistakes and build safer plants which are away from the coast. One of the reasons a nuclear plant is near the coast is for tapping sea water that could be utilised to cool the reactors and the other is that in case of an accident the wind would direct the radiation away from populous centre. Of course this is not the only form of energy, we have the wind and solar energies whose potential has not been fully tapped yet.

Even if nuclear energy is actually a great no since the production cost is app. Rs. 6/- per unit and not at all environment friendly. take the recent case of Japan.

I do agree/respect everybodies view but if the entire world under the power of nuclear energy, the future world's existance we should consider. The country like japan and others they are very much concern about the safety measures in every sector. The third world/developing countries are not that much keen in safety. This negligence is effecting the entire world. So better not encourage this energy. Why cant we think about the micro power plant of hydro and wind

what do you mean by other resources????--even we are unable to extract and makeĀ use of our known resources with known/borrowed technology-----

In context of the scenario in Japan, we should not make the nuclear energy as an uncertain energy..If we do so, we will have nothing left and nothing to say if same magnitude earthquake occurs in India. May be I will not be there even to debate against anything---Japan is 1000yrs ahead of India in all cases---We Indians are used to use others' technologies, and famous in debate and protest..time pass, no brain--no work--only talking like a manager/boss/holding a big post/consultant---.All and above we must review/check our own energy(to work)..perfect thing is..get an MBA..become a manager of high salary........pls god bless us---

Due to the increasing natural calamities, this is the time to review further how we can be more ecofriendly by avoiding the crucial minings and nuclear power plant. Which are threat to the existitance of life in earth.

Nuclear energy is unavoidable. We should not think to avoid this because of some disaster. Look in Japan the Nuclear power plant has sustained earth quake of 9.0 but the Tsunami has created problem there. Secondly the current alternative engery production cost is quite high. Like for solar it is around 150-200 USD/MWh.Whereas for wind the cost of production is 70-120 USD/MWh. However for Nuclear / gas / coal etc the average cost of production is 25-50 USD/MWh. Considering the pressure of availability of oil / gas / coal and cost of production through alternative ways, NUCLEAR IS ONLY OPTION. Also it is safe too.

Padmaja I really don't understand the need for nuclear power. Is it cheap is it easy to produce is if environment friendly. It isĀ surprising to find all the answers of the above are inĀ negative so why should at all we go for nuclear power production instead of the usual ways?Ā Ā

No need to avoid. Though its handling is quite difficult. It is one of the strongest and powerful source of energy. Instead of eliminating its usage, why cant we think of utilizing it productively in controlled conditions. We can think of some advanced and more hazard free methods for its usage. Instead of cutting our nose during cold, let us take some precautions to avoid it or make necessary measures to face the challenge..
