Many students ask this question about why another format of MBA is introduced when the regular 2 year format is very popular for last 50 years or so in India. The est answer is that  times have changed and there are many reasons for a shorter duration MBA program:

a)      The information availability to the students prior to the internet era was not easily available. Students at that time has to work harder to learn & collate the information particularly business information. Now a days the information is available 24x7, therefore, there is an opportunity for students to learn quickly and face the corporate world.

b)      The 2 year format was started by Harvard Business School 90 years ago to prepare managers for manufacturing units. The today’s world is knowledge age, we require managers who can think faster, work faster and give results faster. That’s why the faster MBA program is gaining momentum.

a)      In Europe out of 35 top b-schools, 22 of them offer 1 year program including traditional universities like Cambridge & Oxford. Rest of them offer shorter programs like 15 months – 18 months. Very few colleges in Europe are offering programs in traditional format of 2 year.

In India, various b-schools have started the 1 year MBA format like Indian School of Business (ISB), Indian Institute of Management – Admedabad (IIMA), S P Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), Europe Asia Business School (EABS) and Great Lakes Institute of Management (GLIM). The 1 year format is gaining popularity among students who have prior work experience between 1 to 10 years. I would recommend, those who have more than 10 years of experience, they should look for a part-time MBA program or join Advanced Management Program which are offered by foreign universities.

Many people who taking up MBAare working professionals and they dont want to waste their time by doing the two year course. So one year MBA is a right one for these working professionals, to do their post graduation without deviating much time from their job. Having gained experience and having a PG will provide them with a better chance of promotion.

Dear Gargi,

This is a very good trend that people are going for one year MBA however it will not be a Master's.

According to my views, Any body going to be a Manager, needs to have Master's & this been followed by many organizations. If a person is simple graduate & his colleague is having Master's, definitely the organization will prefer one who has Master's because Master's degree makes people more mature to face the challenges.

if we talk about the one Year MBA it is useless in case a person is simple graduate. Most of the organizations don't value that. People who are simple graduate & started their career little bit earlier, i will prefer them to go proper two year's master's.

One year specialization helps people who had already completed their master's & they want to get the specialization in perticular area. like people already done MSc, MTech, MCA Etc now they want specialization in Sales, HR, IR, IB etc.

So if you are a Graduate, go for the 2 Years Master's or already Master's, go for the specialization. It will pay you in future.

This program is benificial for those who already have entered the market senario means experienced one.

They already have knowledge of the market just they require is to sharpen there skills and get a degree in there name which will help them a lot.So this course offers them what they need is certification they already have knowledge.

Yes, I agree, but here I wish to ask you something.

How can this program which is about learning business tactics & management, help me or my small retail business to reach the next level, provided I have very limited resources to tap?

I hope I will learn something here.

I do accept this ia a growing trend and many MBA candidates are preferring a one-year program over a two-year program. Regardless of the length of time, key issue is learn from the ones who have "the" experiences. Unfortunately, most business school professors have accumulated more experience in teaching the subject matter rather than from practicing real core in doing business daily....
