As per the study released by the CareerCast.com which analyzes more than 200 different jobs annualy said that, for the second year in a row, job hunters should brush up their math, science and computer skills if they want to land a top-ranked, highly rewarding position. As Software developer is the 2nd best job in 2010, and being an Actuary, calculating statistics to determine probability and risk, is the best job to have in 2010.

An actuary earns about $85,000 a year and has few physical demands, little stress, a good work environment and a positive outlook for employment and income growth. Using five key measurement criteria - stress, working environment, physical demands, income and hiring outlook - the 'Jobs Rated' report seeks to compare and contrast careers across a multitude of industries, skill levels and salary ranges, sorting them into a definitive list of jobs that can be called worst and best.

As there are many students on the platform, I would like to ask the professionals on Toostep like,  should one beleive such reports and based upon the best & worst jobs should they change their field to get the best job out there?.......Please do share your views as it will help many aspiring youngsters who are keen to get into jobs in future....

Yes. I support your views. However, the best job depend upon the specialization one has gained over a period of time and elasticity of demand and supply. Actuary professionals are very few in the market whereas the risk associated with Insurance companies and risk management require more actuaries. Also, afte Y2K, lots of people changed their line to IT and the supply of qualified IT personnel is plenty in number. The best job under the current market condition is based on risk more specifically Operational risk area.

I don't think so, many times their passion is what drives them into their chosen field or the course that they have taken up during their study period, just because these reports say what job one is doing is a bad one, when they are interested then only one choses that field, if one starts to believe such reports and start to change their field, then one has to start all over again and that will be difficult for them to do, so it would be better to stick to their field and excel there than going for the alternate at the moment, many times we see as when someone tells them this is not good that will be really good for you now and in your future, they suddenly change their field which is dangerous, as there will be less probability that they will really do good in the alternate field.

To choose the right occupation whether you r doing it for the first time or changing careers.Choosing a career can be confusing.Career means profession which we want to adopt for earning livehood, and planing means proper flow or to make proper decisions. To work in proper flow ,which we want to pursue in our future ahead after acquiring certain level of degree is also very necessary in today's competitive world. The world is now moving very fast and time has come when this meritocratic society accept only those, having right qualification & right skills.

I think without trying by self one should have a blind belief in the other hand people should not ignore it rather.

so yes one should try for such jobs any way no risk no gain.

One should get negative by other people's experience becoz some times it's good to experience it by own self.

Yes,  i agree.well surely a candidate has to improve his/her aptitude, get updated with latest news, start to think creatively, etc.

ofcourse a good job is one where an employee is given challenging tasks everytime so  that he could learn and develop his skills. This is what we call an experience!

One should choose job based on his/her expertise and career aspirations. Just because a job is lucrative does not mean one could be sucessful in it. Moreover, incompetent workers would soon find them out of job. They will be the hardest hit all the time. Moreover, any industry look for specialists and not jack of all trades.

I strongly agree because no matter what profession you are in today's times, there will always be a need to use a computer or do calculations, life has evolved such that we are now focussed on technology and their innovations thereof that we have forgotten the old way and root of how things were done before.

The new generation are setting trends with the latest gadgets, technology devices, its amazing how the world has progressed, for me Maths and Computers are essential for any profession, irrespective how basic and trivial the profession might be.

What kind of foolishness is this?? Rating jobs as best and worst?

Any job that earns you decent money is good. There are no bad jobs or good jobs. What you require to understand is yourself. What are you capable of delivering? What are your core competencies?? Skill set?? All these questions need answers that are to be solely supplied by you and no one else. yesm you may ask for guidance in terms of assesment for these qualities but beyond that you have to help yourslef.

The topic is " best job and worst job ". In my thought, this is simple and 'demand-supply' theory applies even here. The tough/ difficult job is the best and easy2get job is the worst. This may vary every five years in conformity with economic situation/ industry demand.

Now, how the job hunters prepare themselves for the job is another aspect. Yes, three basic requirements will be always there : Math, Science and computer skill. And ... the rest is 2be decided by the job hunters.

After they enter into a particular job, dedication is required.

Too right, Dr. Ravindranath!

Not only motivation, dedication and purpose count, but also experience. And one cannot obtain this by jumping from one career to another.

My answer is a firm NO. We have surveys and surveys and it ultimately depends on the prospective student to make up his mind, basing his decision on the ground realities rather than printed surveys, however reputed the publication maybe! There is a discernible change from the earlier days of engineering and medicine as now there are innumerable job opportunities. There is nothing like a good job or a firm job, and it would be foolish to go by these surveys alone. A nose to the job market done in a systematic manner, would yield better results.

i support the argument with a cleavage that prospective job hunters priorities are  blurred for the trap laid by IT ENABLED services.Engineers of any stream are now soft ware programmers resulting in paucity and good hands in infrastructural sector. The argument is therefore  appropriate for job selection  and for job JUMPERS..

I think when someone wants to make a change in profession, he/she will do it based on the liking and with some understanding of the risk for that chosen role/responsibility. They might not have the full picture in the beginning, but will realise the pros and cons of it later on.

Why will they take it up (a change in career or focus towards what is said by others) unless they like it, both as a challenge and probably as comfort. Now, who will do it based on such reports on what is nice (according to some parameter set not by the person who is reading it). Some might just do it to make it easy for themselves. Some do take it up seriously to explore, to find something new. Else, we wouldn't have inventors and discoverers. (Mistakes will always happen, risks will be taken, fruits of achievement will be shared).

It will be a new discovery for a tea stall owner to come up with a fast food takeaway. And that is probably a mere observation for the rest. For him/her it is a change. I am not sure if all such guys have access to such reports and if they comprehend such information. Locally, they might get them as word of mouth. To who are these reports (or messages) targeted at when they are designed? The reports are informative, definitely, probably some will like them and might make judgements and amendments in career. But for some they are an information piece. Because, when it comes to making a decision, the person will factor in all the aspects as discussed by everyone here in this forum. He/She still has to make the decision and will do it. In the end, what matters is what one likes to do and how to make it good for himself/herself as a profession, and for the organization he/she is bound to.

Ultimate aim of life is to get bliss and become free from any kind of bondage. This sounds very philosophical, but this the final aim of our lives. Therefore, we must stick to doing what we love. We should not change our chosen path for more money or any kind of material illusion.

One should choose his/her career according to his/her interest, which is more satisfying to him/her.These reports do not hold any water for choosing a career. You cannot make an artist an actuarian or you cannot make a singer a software developer just because it pays you more.In the long run,it will be foolish to go by WPM(Whoever pays me more) theory, because no matter how much you earn, you will still be dissatisfied because you will not be enjoying your job.So I do not support the statement.

When one start the career, one should focus doing well in their own area or core strength. The progress initially can be linear in the same area for expertise. After attaining certain level one plateau out. That's the time one should expand one's area of expertise in taking up additional responsibilities/new areas. As the maxim says excel in one's area of core strength, leadership comes automatically.

And leaders are basically team oriented and hence acquire vision to handle things. Doing different things is no match for doing things differently.

Hence my answer is No.

Hi Ms Diya Mehra,

I have my own perception of the industry recruitment regarding right person for the right job.

The reports and the earnings are the 2 causes that attract many and make them blind to follow on these matters. They tend to align themselves towards that path and finally either land or neither get any. To be positive those who are consistent in their belief and look forward for that and are armed for that may achieve that.this percentage of people these days are very few.

The recruitment process though maybe fine tuned yet either the organisation has many constraints in filling the vacant position as a result of some essential parameters that they look forward to fulfill.

Time constraints

Target constraints

Nearest best availability constraints

lack of not spelling the vision of the employer to the recruiter.

Trying to fit in the nearest better person to the slot.

Not been able to analyze the profile whether its short living or long term plans .

The recruiter is able to provide another one of similar nature in 3 months time if the employer is not satisfied or the employee leaves.

Constraints of non professional recruiters in the empanel of the employers.

and a host of points that really does not match the recruited person for a particular job.

The persons also try and get into various jobs changing their personal tastes/liking and abilities for immediate social fulfillment of their obligations which are more a force to takes such decisions.

The environment that has pressures for an individual to switch jobs.

The craze for material gain is another reason

above all the the complexities of the peer or colleagues who are already in better jobs do have an impact on such people.

The employment system due to lack of faith in the recruitment system is also a cause where local politics, influence, job protectionism are the causes that where even if the right candidate is available are not taken due to these issues.

Another factor in some companies is the regional, language , cultural, sons of soil effect also hinders a person to get a suitable job.

Ultimately there is always some bias to some thing or the other where many factors do not get many into the right profession their choice and liking.

Even in ideal situation this would not work because we have too many contenders for a few available job . On the other there are no many jobs created for the right people as there is a lot of skill deficiency among many.

Indian degrees are mere degrees of academic and does not prepare them with skill for employment.

Hence its obvious that by default many do not get ;that's one!, secondly even if people fall prey to fantasies of reaching high faster gets a different job not of his choice.

Generally people find a square peg for a round hole generally and square pef tries to become round as for as possible to fit in with difficulty.

The right job for the right person may be available only when skill development is improved alongside with generation of jobs commensurate the lakhs of graduates passing out every year.

Kind Regards

Major M Rajendran

I Don't think one should change their career field due to such reports.one has to choose a proffesion in which they have a tharow knowledge, passion and patience to achieve goals. And as mr.anil kumar says they should creat innovative ideas to achieve aim rather than shifting their career.

It is very difficult to comapre careers in different fields only on economical status.every field has it's own up and downs ,and it is even difficult to shift one's profession as per best jobs records every year.By doing that one can not get stability & proper knowledge to handle one  jobs properly.

One should give full dedication to one job which he has chosen with own will n wish.

I do not think there is any so called Best or Worst Job exists, its just a mind set. Any survey cannot predict which a best or worst job is. Most of the time job satisfaction is attributed to money what we earn, but it’s not really true in my opinion. It just how much we are Happy at the end of the day. Some time I felt, labors staying next to our Apartment are getting good sleep compare to me.

Also most of the time these surveys conducted mostly among IT/ITES segments because they can be easily accessible and they do not get access to many other segments, which cover more than 80% of jobs in India.

Love for the field, passion to continue to work and learn while contributing in different aspects of the field over the long run, and most importantly the will to win and excel in that field are the things that one should endure. These qualities are much more important than the events that occur. I think most would come to an understanding to be above fact sooner or later and be at peace.

The side effects of a competitive mind are the comparision of your position with others and repend. This mind pollution forces you to change the profession in wrong time. Working in own field is like obeying own Dharma and it can be excelled to get the ultimate goal. People can also create innovative ideas in other fields with out shifting and they are well recognized. Love to the field you have chosen in your tender age and dedicate on it and wait for your turn. I support because if one does not understand his own field, how he can handle other jobs properly.

most of the times such reports are based upon a few people who are randomly selected for the poll, hence it signifies the ideology of only a few people and not of everybody, hence they are not reliable

Moreover regardless of what field you are in or which is the fastest growing field in the present time,u should always make sure that you pursue a career which gives you job satisfaction

A person can excel in a job only if he/she has passion for it. Opting for something just becuase it is hot today will not work in the long run. I think it is important to plan your career based on your strength and than select an Industry were you can utilize the same and get maximum benefit.

the report only consider some factors associated with a job profile, holistic approach is missing .in todays complex business enviornment ,only being good with maths or science doesn't guarantee's job .one's jod prospects are ascertained through various stages of screening .if its like one  have ability to crunch numbers but is passive or can't convince others is better to be placed for back office job that doesn't involve much interaction outside their organisation  .MANAGERS  ,are made out of those who have complete personality to address the various challenges.as far as  hefty pay packages of actuary managers or software developers is concerned they don't have to have anything more than numbers or techincal acumen which is sole requirement of their job.on a funny knot ,one would like to be employed with org. having plenty of calculators availble .

I feel such reports which are published are not overall true or the fact.  The data is manipulated and then released in the market. Its not viable to go with those data and decide your next future or job. So its advisable to study the market condition from all the possible ways and then try to take such step in life. .... Thank you, Manish N

One should not change jobs and even trajectory based on some high-flying reports, which have a very broad and general outlook. Thes reports tend to generlise too much.

I firmly believe a person should stay in the best position most suited for them. The risk, as I see it, is that they may prosper in another field, but internally it will not be fulfilling and I'm sorry to say, they will probably be promoted until this person reaches their optimum level of incompetence.

Its all about the person rather the field which decide the success path n life...Actuary , Software development are some of the firled where we are getting huge amount of foreign investment from some of the world leading MNCs and corporation due to which they are getting so mch of highlight and everyone want to join ignoring their personal interest , strong and weak points as well as personal desire and aspiration of life...No field or profession can guarantee you a success unless u dont excel in ur work and that is where the real competition comes up...If we go by the research then Computer SCience , Economics are the top profession where people are highly paid off but how many of them join such domain ? The real problem is we are running behind the area where we are highly paid and simply ignoring our real interest and aspiration in life...we have to see what are the things we love to do and then continue focos on it ...im sure everyone will get success...Interior designing , Financial Planning , Investment Banking and wealth management , Consulting , project management , teaching are also some of the field where u can excel provided what is that which attract u and which is ur main strengh.

At the end "If everyone start focusing and joining Actuary and Software Development do you think the market and industry will succeed and where the economy of the country will go?
