According to a report by Australian researchers sedentary lifestyle, for every hour of TV viewing, the risk of dying early from heart disease rises by 18%. According to them, each hour of TV viewing also increases our risk of dying from cancer by 9%. Overall, each hour spent in front of TV increases our risk of death by 11%. Also, doing sedentary jobs- sitting at the desk or in front of a computer- is equally dangerous for our health. There is a modest link between cancer deaths and television viewing. But the link between the time spent watching television and cardiovascular deaths is very direct and strong.

Overall, there is a strong link with death from all sedentary causes, regardless of other lifestyle factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and obesity. According to the researchers, the human body is designed for activity, not for long periods of sitting. Technological, social, and economic changes mean that people don't move their muscles as much as they used to. Consequently, the levels of energy expenditure as people go about their lives continue to shrink.

So users, do you also believe that TV viewing is harmful for our health?

I agree with this report. I, myself have seen health and behavioural changes in patients addicted to TV and those who spend long hours in front of computers. So, this research, which has been done by many professional doctors, when itself says so, there is no doubt left.

TV Viewing can be proved harmlful to health. But it is taken in long run. Practically speaking, People in IT need to work over computers and TV Viewing is the only entertainment in weekdays for many people. So we cant aviod watching TV. instead one can reduce the time for TV viewing and take in more time for a brisk exercises in the morning hours to burn some calories and increase body mobility

Sedentary life in any form will affect one's health. So, whether it is before TV, Computer or any other work which requires a sitting of about 2-3 hrs are sure to have bad health. If active persons sit before TV for one hour they may not have health problems initially but later they may get addicted to TV and can acquire sedentary related health problems.

well i'm not sure about that.. wat i feel is on one hand, TV is a major n easily available source to gain various updates..n also at times its the only means of entertainment. on the other hand if someone try to exceed the limit, by using it continuously they seem to face problems..

it can have more kinda psycic disorders apart from physical.. it can infact increase laziness for now many ppl are completely addicted to television sets, it seems to have become a part in everyone's life.. so,its upto the person to not lose any sense on usin tv as a source of knowledge n entertainment.

yes, watching television or computers as per the report could lead to health problems as there a lot of factors associated with it.

You are more sitting in one place making less body movements for hours. You feel sluggish all the time sitting and no activity. Mentally you are getting conditioned to what you watch continuously.

This factor could add to health consequences apart from the existing known factors.

Yes,there is no doubt in it.Just imagine, if a person sitting in front of TV or computer for more than 2 or 3 hrs, what will be the condition of your eyesight, back pain, headaches, tiredness?.Surely you will be getting any one of this.Practically, we can't avoid TV or computer because that is the main entertainment & knowledgeable one in our daily life.Generally If you are watching 20" TV then you have to sit 160 cm from the TV i.e.,8 times of your screen size. But is it possible?.The only answer is NO.The next dangerous thing is computer games,it's a really worst thing among childrens.Once they started playing, then noone can rescued them from that games.

If it continues, then the normal life life span of human races is just 45 to 50yrs only.

Of course excess of anything is bad, but in our country there are far more reasons to die other than TV watching. Here people die because they are hungry, they die coz of pollution, epidemics, poor health-care facilities,  road accidents to name a few. So in comparison this is a rather trivial report. Point is this report is unimportant and doesn't deserve attention.

Well said Mr. Nithin, I agree with you. Watching TV is not harmful until you do some exercise. But nowadays people are not watching TV for hours because almost everyone started working  and they watch only for an hour or two. So I don't thing it will be harmful or cut-down the life.

Thanks....

Watching television is informative and should not be harmful to people who have active life style. Those people who take evening walk or who come from office to home by walking or who do workouts regularly in the gym, for those people watching television is not harmful.

Watching TV will be harmful for those people who already are overweight or obese and who do not exercise. If someone watches television everyday for more than two hours and has a habit of eating saturated food then that person can have health problems.

Scientific evidence shows that watching TV is harmful only if a person does not have active life style in an entire day. Those people who work out regularly and burn calories, they should not have any problem by watching television daily for for about 2-3 hours.

On what basis can we say so? Our country is full of youths of whom majority work in IT industries and we all know there, they are bound to sit in front of computers not less than 10-13 hours a day. Also, almost every house in India has TV because of which majority of our population is addicted to it. Everybody knows this fact. Had this report been true, then we wouldn't have faced population explosion, rather majority of our population would have sweeped off. But we can see they are healthy as always. Just their eyes have been effected because of the rays and the pressure on eyes. Thats it. No health problem came. Majority of Indians die because of intoxication and pollution not because of TV viewing or computers. I don't trust this report...
