I support that there is a way out and YES population is a problem.

It has to do with EDUCATION. The penetration of quality schools and lack of proper format by government / municipal schools. This is our biggest issue. education gives the person an insight of the world around him / her that they are not able to understand. They may see it if the TV is reached there but how much do they understand?? Education would be the first means of creating awareness for the people to understand what they can do with their life and achieve any remote reality of success that they wish.

Education is the basis for our country to really surge ahead!! Thanks for the referral and a very meaningful debate here :)

I Completely Agree that India is over Populated. Many of our Govt Plans has never turned out any fruits even after borrowing billions of dollars & Burdening the Tax payers & other Statutory Charge paying Communities.

The Way out is
1. Educating the rural folk.

2. Providing Incentives to persons Adhering to population control rules & so forth

Population is the biggest strength for India, ofcourse after independence it could have been a problem but now India is emerging as a super power because of its diverse and youth rich population, If India manages to get rid of bureaucracy and corruption its population will be fully advantageousfor its growth.

Dear Ravindra Ji, do you think it is possible to control the growth of population, but i think the other way, how to utilize them effectively for the productivity and towards the development of our nation. In fact the population growth is a asset for us, despite facing some problems.

Absolutely.

If you compare the population density of India and China , India's is 324 people per sq. km. , while China's is just 133. Even this does not tell the true story. The population density of the metropolitan cities is shocking :

Chennai has a population density of more than 25,000 people per sq. km. ; in comparison , Shanghai has a density of just 2,300 , while Beijing's is even lower at 1,400 !

Population is the biggest curse to afflict our country , since resources are a limitation for every country on earth. It is only control of the population which will ensure that the resources are sufficient and can be equitably allocated.

Without doubt Population is a big problem, and it is a big problem because no one is interested in solving it.

Do we have the courage and determination to attach disincentives on this issue?........ At least the politicians do not and they rule the.....

Why are we always talking about carrots alone, would we not run forever run short. If a tough decision or two are required in national interests then it must be taken and taken before it gets too late. Whose interests are served if the population can not come under control??

Dear Mr. Kaliyamoorthy ,

If you think China is a benchmark for correct development , please take a look at the following links :

1. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchina/2010-01/22/content_9361049.htm

2. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9424936/

India's Gini coefficient is less than China's , which means that the income disparity in India is less than in China.

China may present a perfect face to the world , but behind the perfection is a lot of rot and decay.

Population is definitely the biggest problem that the country faces. It leads to :-

1. Excessive competition for the limited resources that the country has.

2. Corruption- More mouths to feed forces even honest people towards illegitimate means of income.

3. Crime - Those who cannot manage to stay in the employment net resort to criminal activities for survival.

4. Lack of peace of mind for people who want to do their job.

And many others , like the lack of decency, discipline, tidiness in our society.

Solution:-

1. Enforce strict contraceptive measures.

2. Penalise those who have more than 2 children.

3. Impose an extra tax on families who have more than 2 children.

If possible enforcing the 2 child norm the way China does, but its not possible in India.

Thanks for the referral Mr.Makrand.

To challenge the population growth, we must have development program, like infrastructure, utilization of resources in proper way, enhancing good education system [ recently our Government implemented  Right To Education bill ], creating employment opportunities, avoiding red-tapism in implementing the development planning/projects which increases the project cost etc.,

On the contrary, the strength of our population with more educated youngsters will definitely elevate our country as a Super Power very soon. India needs its youngsters educational skills, may be engineering, physics, medical, technology, space science etc.

Yes, Our rising population is definitely going to be a problem in the future. The census has been kicked off today, let's see what the rate of growth of population actually is.. :D

Today we say that our population is our biggest asset, in that the number of youth is quite large. What we are forgetting and not realising now is that this population would grow old in the next few decades, putting us in a situation similar to what China is in today. If we do not educate the population, as Mr Bhave says, there is a lot to fear for the future of the country.

Controlling population seems to be a distant dream, though very possible. The resources are going to drain out, land under agriculture and forestation is fast depleting and these are worrying parameters.

Thanks for the referral, Mr Bhave

Well that's a tough questions in terms of economy but yes its not doing well as far the ecology is concerned.

All over the world, sorry to say so, but human beings as one of the species of the mother earth, is spreading like a virus,,we have truncated /destroyed forests, posed a severe threat to many other species of the earth, put a huge pressure on natural resources like water & food (that we have started to witness now),,,not to mention other environmental disasters like green house & global warming..

I do not know what economy will look like after few decades,,but yes,,,as some say,,,the next world war shall happen due to water,,,

There is a way out,,,,there is always a way out,,,,a bit of determination,,,& a bit of wisdom,,,& a bit of cooperation amongst countries,,,education,,awareness,,,

Thanks Makrand for ur referral,,,,

There is more to what is stopping us than just population. Heard of corrupt politicians, beauracratic red tapism, cheating business houses, non-tax paying public.... the list could go on.

And you said something about population ! No sir! it is much beyond that. Society has degraded to such an extent that today we have stopped functioning ethically and honestly. When China with a bigger population than us could flex its muscles, why cant we indians - having the best intelligentsia in the world. Nope we are busy creating more complex caste systems and reservations within. We beleive in dividing people further and create petty issues exploiting religion.

And you say we have a big population !

In fact population is boon for this country as we are going to in china there will be severe shortages of the middle level management skilled  working population  as they have controlled population they are going to end up having more senior population who are retired and too junior population not geared up to take up the working class which adds burden to exchequer

Our Biggest problem is attitude and honesty and corruption. if we can implement compulsory service to military at the age of 18 and instill the basic values to personality will greatly help

It is corruption, huge funds at the disposal of politicians, schemes designed to siphon off money which will be very harmful. This simultaneously creates huge cache of black money and encourages mafia and terrorism.

Also another major problem is caste based politics and this divisive politics will harm the country in the next 50-100 years to come.

Yes .I do agree with Inderpal Ji. Its a big problem. But, let us talk about the potential they have. How a family with big size manage a home successfully, the same way, the govt. need to manage the population. Controlling method is on the parallel vein .But it should not hamper growth of nation. Its a social , economical problem that everyone knows. What we endeavor is that by providing , proper infrastructure to educate, employ & develop a meaningful society.Doing so , we can alleviate the evils of population growth. Never underestimate human resources & try to turn out for success .There are countries which are spending money to grow / multiply population. Think about them.

Capitalize on Human resource to achieve the objectives of the society.

Do not look at population just as numbers as world statistics shows. It is the asset what we have. It needs to be meticulously agumented for our betterments. CHERISH THEM WITH BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE, GIVE THEM THE POTENTIAL TO GROW. Every individual has a potential it is to be tapped to the maximum possible ways. Just wasting them is not good. Look at China.

The problem isnt population.. The problem is that a huge portion of this population belongs to "Philosopher" category & a very small portion is "actual workers, doers or action takers". Take any issue, any field, any sector & function; We see opinions flooding on a problem but very few believe in working on problem without blame-game.

Avisek do not get discouraged, we can utilise the political system for better things.

political sysytem is created by citizens and utilised by citizens.

Polititians do the work given by citizens. Let 5 people go to politian for good cause difinitely he will do . Ultimately many of us are approaching for personal causes not  for common cause.

in addition to articulation of our ideas we should work to- wards the better causes.

Then difinitely we can achive the welfare and good things.

Population is not the problem for India's growth in fact population provides an opportunity to grow. In the coming decade or so India will have biggest demographic advantage because of young Indian working population. By 2015 India's average age of working population will be 29 years as compare to China's 37 year. This will give India an opportunity to grow faster.

Main hindrance in India's growth is delay in decision making process & inappropriate policies. Due to delay in decision making you lose opportunity advantage. We have several examples where due lack of govt.'s faster decision making kills the upcoming projects. A very good example is of Arcelor-Mittal. A company is seeking an approval to build a steel plant  in Orissa region however it is almost 3-4 years have gone however nothing has finalized except more than 50 iteration of signing agreement.

Another region is that India is a late starter in doing reforms. India’s first liberalization policy was formed in 1991 however China did the same 15 years earlier to India.

Today & in the coming years or so India & China will grow faster then any other country however I still feel India’s growth story is more real then China’s. India just needs faster govt.’s decision and good policy formation.

A good Debate .....Saisantosh.

Population indeed is a problem where there is no vision......vision for development.India does has a vision...We must be proud to be for it!.

Well populatiion is not a problem, the only reason for still be a developing country is the application of efficient and effective methods for development.

on this platform we come accross many topics on brain drain......lack of infrastructure.....these are the problems for India today....and the worst one "Corruption".

Solution :

Try to satisfy the best people and retain them in our country...pay them the best.

Avoid delay in infrastructure development...create fast track approval system within the governmant bodies.

harsh punishment..equal to life sentence for currupt officers as well as people offering bribe.(this is give n take)

Apply effective measures and efficient personal to development schemes.

finally use population as our strength and not weakness.

Thanks for the referral

Saisantosh, one population was a problem but now we need population to grow. So according to me population is not the problem but how they use the resources is the problem. So people should know to use the available resources efficiently. Today improper resource management is the biggest problem.......   :)
