Clicking on a public-private partnership with global IT firm Radiant Info Systems, the Hyderabad's Cherlapally Central Jail will become the only prison in the country to have a BPO unit in its premises, reports Saswati Mukherjee from the Economic Times. While Radiant Info Systems will invest money and expertise in the unit, prison authorities will provide space and labour. To begin with, the BPO will function in three shifts, with a strength of around 70 odd inmates in one shift. The prisoners will work from within the 'closed space' of the BPO office and will be taken out of the locked enclosure at the beginning and end of each shift. Jail officials said that after the BPO is set up, the "interest level and aptitude" of the inmates will be considered before involving them in this ambitious project. According to C N Gopinatha Reddy, Director General of prisons, Andhra Pradesh, as many as 200-250 inmates could be engaged in the BPO unit and they will be shortlisted from inmates that are matriculates and graduates. Officials explained that those shortlisted would first be trained by experts and later absorbed by the BPO company. "For starters, the convicts working at the BPO would not have access to phones as is the case in a call centre. They would be involved in bank-related work of data entry and transfer," said Reddy. "The idea is to ensure that on being released, the prisoners find it easy to get absorbed in the mainstream. Prisoners often find getting suitable employment post release a tough task. So, this is an attempt to ensure that their employers know them well in advance."

Vipin really a great idea.......

BPO in prison is a good option for the prisoners. Normally the government wastes huge amount of money on the prisoners and they waste their life doing nothing. This will help them to earn and all generate some revenue for the government.

So this should be implemented in all prisons and the companies should come forward to help the government.......

The concept meets perfectly with the objective of imprisonment, i.e. to reform the prisoner and to impart them with usable skills to enable them to rejoin the Society, seamlessly.

I agree with Amit on this.. This is the first step towards reforming our prison system.

The Jail authorities should examine the nature of crime did by the inmate especially whether he is a serial offender before recommending him for the BPO. And this is not a Cost cutting measure from the BPO firm but an initiative from the government to help the Inmates have a better life after their punishment period.

This is a very good initiative, but should be handled with more caution.

BPO's in a prison is an option that needs to be considered keeping the pros and cons in mind. It is a good way to generate revenue and the inmates will also not be idle. They will also be rehabilitated and their future will be more promising. Alternatively, recidivism in the inmates could lead to issues later in the future.

Thus, these aspects need to be considered and the perceived risks need to be kept in mind while undertaking this exercise.....

The Idea is good no doubt but then not sure BRO is the place we should be looking at,there are city developement projects like the fly overs and metro which needs lot of labour, there you need physically fit people to be there, that small money is inviting the farmers and people from Village which can impact on getting your basic need i.e FOOD.

If prisoners can be "used" in producing other goods and services then why not a BPO. Is it not surprising that China is using the cheap labour in form of their prisoners to produce goods at ridiculosly lower prices which are flooded all over the world! We should not be averse to the idea if there are enough qualified people in prisons capable of doing this job or people having enough skills to do this responsible job, so be it. Let it happen, why not? May be this will instill a greater sense of responsibility and give purpose of their life to many prisoners. After all, as the saying goes - Hate the crime and not criminal. There are habitial criminals but there are also criminals lodged in the various prisons of India who had committed crimes at the spur of the moment and that very uncontrolled moment lands him or her in perpetual disgrace. May be we can at least provide some sort of solace to all. We are a democratic country and every human has his rights to live. I am all for any idea adding to the growth of India.

The idea sounds great. It will not only help the Govt earn some money. The prisioner also earns money on on being finishing the sentence will be able to join the main stream.

I completely agree with Amit on this.

I think India start to think like China or low cost concept. But it is very innovative idea to start BPO in prison. But it has two way discussion positive side is that It is good Idea but negative side is that Those person who didn't get job go to prison although negative side is no more applicable but we have seen many negative aspect used by Indian for example; Crime rate in India is now increasing, police & social people are unable to stop it. But your suggestions/opinions provide the right way for direction:-positive or negative......

Nice support for the argument...

Yes Amit, everyone is suuporting this idea. These days unfortunately, many educated, officials, IAS,IPS, Engineers, Doctors even law makers are either being convicted or under trails are entering these jails doing not really useful things inside. this will pave way for them to do some thing useful after they go out.

This Charlapalli Centrla Prison is considered a High tech prison is actually a place to visit like a tourist spot. Inside with beautiful gardens, landscape areas, fruit bearing trees, many dignitories who visit this place from around the world appriciate the environment here. Some of them  feel in back of their mind that they would love to be here again at least once and stay some time. ( Lighter vein ).

This is first hand information. I had the privillage to involve during the construction of this Prison as Dy.Executive Engineer right from foundation stage till completion and inaugaration.

Really very surprising and innovative idea provided used wisely.think by this innovative idea prisoners can also get another chance to get back to their normal lives even they should get chance to correct their mistake.

But authorities should make sure the complete safety so that they can not access stuff which they are  not supposed to for instance if prisoner has to work in bank they should not leak any secret  account information.

Improving the employment chances of prisoners after their release , was probably first considered by Kiran Bedi.

This idea which is following in her footsteps , is laudable and should be introduced in all prisons , especially for undertrials , who to their misfortune remain in prison for longer than the maximum possible sentence for their crimes.

Yes. I fully agree to the idea. If we accept that jail is a correction home for the people who have done wrong then the entire environment and system of jails has to be training its residents a true professional way of life and BPO which has CRM as a major component of the working system would be a very effective way to correction for the inmates and also would be utilisation of virtually dead national resourse called people in the jails.

Actually Amit this is a great idea but majority level of the prisoners in our country is uneducated and if the government is really trying to impose this new regulation then it depends upon the government but by my response it is bad idea ......

and if they commit ant crime on the net then who will be responsible .........and dude prison is a place to punish the people not a new workplace if it happens so than you will see  all the unemployed youths in there....

sorry dude nothing personal just a thought from me

Nopes not at all....we need to follow modern ethics....dat strts wl jo dikhta h wo bikta h ....if u shw the real product chances are less of getting high sales and wen u add some attraction or gloss to it ...u are superhit..this goes against the school ethics...but what to do in order to be a frontrunner u need to compromise with ur bookish knowledge and have to apply practical knowledge which is far away frn ur ethics and morals

of course this is a great idea, but if it really succeed and implemented in all over India then in feature all the BPO work will goes to Indian jails, with this may the prisoners life will be changed but the money goes to the government. Again the growth in unemployment which may cause to the dangerous attempts like suicide and many more like every Indian knows about the output of unemployment. If this implementation really grows up then there will be no difference between the prisoners and professionals, no one will care to follow the law.

It’s really a good idea but with lot of disadvantages for which common people has to pay. If it’s really going to be implemented then must be with some rules and regulations and with reserved percentage which will be helpful to both prisoners and professionals.

BPO can not be considered as business in prison. But, can be introduced as a Rehabilitation measures. This will enhance their(prisoners) image among people & reinforce faith and confidance in them. Immediately, they can not expect a good returns but, may be in the long run, it may yield good results. Already, extension counters of various schooling /college educations are in place. This step may motivate those who pursue education from the cell.Whatsoever measures are introduced, it is necessary that there needs to be a conducive environment to facilitate to further it.

In this connection I would like to highlight that, the Beggers Rehabilitation centers opened in Tamilnadu is no where seen today. But, still, we find amtin number of beggers .We find rehabilitation centers are empty. Govt./ private enterprising needs to has continuous patronage by all concerned in positive manner.Good luck we can say.
