BSNL is planning to roll out wireless Internet technology, WiMAX to the rural areas. This project would establish 7000 Common Service Centers (CSC) across the country from where the WiMAX facility would be operable from. The project is estimated to cost 1500 crore rupees. With India having a very low penetration interms of Internet access, this would give a breather for them.

The plans are ambitious not just because of the potential value it can offer in rural governance over a long term, but also because it will help India move forward in enabling more citizens make use of Internet access.

But when there is no Wimax for the Urban users properly why are they going for Rural which still has low connectivity interms of Broadband.

So whom should they prioritize Wimax technology, for the Urban or to the Rural?

I think first they should properly connect the urban with Wimax technology and not rural according to me, Rural areas definitely need internet penetration but when they are not having proper Broadband connections in the near adjoining districts it is not going to help. So it would be wise to connect the Urban first and then move on to rural and not the other way around. As BSNL would come to know the intricacies of Wimax as Urban is having all the required technolgy in place to implement something like this, and with this they will know what are the areas that need to be strengthened in this regard, even with so much broadband connections in the urban userbase still the penetration of Internet is very low in India. So we need this Wimax technology first to the Urban userbase to increase the connectivity and better penetration and for better understanding of how Wimax can be used in a right way, and this can be a learning process to implement Rural wimax as a successful one.

WiMax is the correct form of distribution of Internet media to Rural areas!

Urban awareness has reached levels where people know and have a choice for their internet / cable operator. It is the Rural markets that need to be connected so that every person there realises what the power of the net is!! Urban market has enough players and we are also equally knowledgeable about the usage of Net on mobile, laptops, computers etc.

I think BSNL is doing good as its a virgin market and they stand to gain a lot as they would also have the first mover advantage!!

Thanks for the referral Sonal!

I dont know why they are hellbent upon making B.S.N.L bankrupt. They have nonexistent network and pathetic service in Kolkata itself what they will provide in rural areas and to how many customers is anybody`s guess.Every other week I have to call up the S.D.E of the local exchange and use swear words otherwise my broadband freezes. The speed and connectivity is pathetic.Do they not have any business sense?WIMAX IN RURAL AREAS!PROVIDED BY BSNL.They should provide better services in urban areas first.

i think urban india needs such technologies.......what rural areas is better education system and quality of life in the name of proper hygene and food......and educated rural class is already moving to cities for living....so to use such technologies efficiently they must be provided to urban cities and i am not saying that rural people must be kept unaware of technology but internet should be introduced into their system and they must be educated in using internet and how can they use it to help and develop their life style .........but not such technologies like wimax.......yeah proper broadband service i think will help them..........

well what rural basically needs is proper education with atleast a little quality of life......rural areas are not properly educated so how can they use wimax or other technology first they must be educated then only such technologies should be introduced to them.......talking about urban india the educated rural class is moving to cities for living so it is better to introduce such tecnologies to urban

I agree with Sonal but would like to add some more points to her points. Urban areas today has comparatively more population than the Rural areas. People are more computer literate here. By concentrating here first, BSNL, as a company can get lot of profits. Indeed rural sector should not be neglected but they can be taken care with the profits gained from urban areas. Since priority should be given to urban areas more because of its more internet users.

Appreciated.

Atleast  someone (BSNL in this case)  is willing to reachout the remote areas and not confinig itself to money making pockets ( Urban areas). It has wider social implications beneficial for all section of people.

Firstly, the tender is for 7000 Base Stations and not 7000 CSCs. The number of CSCs are far more. Secondly, this tender is based on funds received by BSNL from DIT so the issue here is not about Rural vs Urban but just a procurement step for which funds have already been allocated.

Urban rollouts of BSNL have already started in Punjab and Kerala, which were tendered last year and orders place a couple of months back. For the rest of the Circle Urban Areas, BSNL is mulling on whether to go on its own like in Punjab & Kerala or through a Franchisee model (as in Guj, Mah, AP) as ultimately BSNL have to bear the license fees for both 3G and BWA as well as the CAPEX for both these servicews, which it might or might not afford.

So let us not discuss unnecessarily on Tenders which are just part of the procurement process and bring in Urban vs Rural issues.

Rural could also mean a softer way of entering into the mainstream Urban market.  All flaws and drawbacks can be fixed before entering the urban market which is highly stringent and SLA driven.
