Workflow is a part of BPM.Workflow is just one way among many to implement business processes.A WFMS controls the flow of work from one person to another. In other words, it controls the information associated with workflows in an enterprise. But a WFMS does not optimize a process.

The two again are not falling under the same umbrella for me. Both are required to effectively tackle operations.

Management is planning, coordination and control. BPM is applying these management principles to an organization's business processes - automated or not. In other words, you can perform BPM without a workflow management system in place, if you treat it as an entirely organizational concept. Of course, it is easier if you have a technology infrastructure in place that allows you to automate certain coordination aspects (workflow), and to automatically record and gather metrics of process performance (Business Activity Monitoring).

A process is a discrete, holistic, temporal and logical sequence of those activities that are necessary to manipulate an economically relevant object with a particular objective.

Business processes are a specific category of processes. A business process is defined as a high level process determined by the overall goals of the enterprise. Business processes contain activities that interface with market partners (i. e., customers, suppliers, or other third parties).

A workflow is a specific representation of a process, which is designed in such a way that the formal coordination mechanisms between activities, applications, and process participants can be controlled by an information system, the so-called workflow management system.

Business Process Management is the sum of all organizational activities centered around the definition, implementation, execution, control, supervision and improvement of processes. BPM can be conducted with or without information system support (although IT support makes it a lot more efficient). It is considered a more holistic view of Business Reengineering in that includes execution, measurement and control of processes, in addition the modeling and improvement or redesign activities. BPM in general is an organizational concept. Workflow Management tends to be seen as the technical coordination of process execution. It is a component of a comprehensive BPM strategy, but does not encompass the strategic or change management activities associated with BPM.

Yes i to agree to this concept of workflow is a part of BPM process.

But essentially both can survive without other.

My Viewpoint any BPM tool provides the functionality for workflow in terms of automation. so what i would suggest is even if there is an implementation for the workflow put it into the basket of BPM as it would help in further customisations at later point of time.

Control as a Management principle for an organization is highlighted in the point, then how come without the proper Work Flow Control the proper BPM can be followed. You cacnnot treat BPM purely as a concetual term for any organization, since work flow is also incorporated in the organizational activities which do require a proper control other wise all the processes might go haywire...
