According to a latest report, one of the foremost reasons for the unsatisfied higher education in the realm of science, engineering and technology has been the lack of proper technical education in India. India needs to go through a radical change, in the way in which the scientists and engineers are being trained. The want of experience on part of the professionals stands as a barrier in the improvement of the technological sector.

The latest issue of 'Current Science' holds that, the present system of technical education is insufficient to solve the problems regarding drinking water, electricity, absence of civic planning, rising unemployment, and various regional developments. Improving a nation's technical education system is directly correlated to its economic health and the social development of its population. One of the reasons for India's failings and America's dominance has been the outdated and ailing technical education system of the former and the excellence of the latter.

So users, do you think the American model of tech education develop India?

In our country, not only are most of these institutes are poorly planned, but in lieu of the government's European approach to funding universities, every additional central university is a drain on precious resources. So I think in order to have a sound background of technological education, India is in need of more power houses of new knowledge. But the lack of proper planning would be a major setback. By remodeling the Indian technology education on the system of American higher education; India can have considerable improvements in the standard of living of the citizens. The funds allocated for establishment of such technological institutes should be used to amend the existing institutions to improve their standards.

Fundamentally there are serious value differences between the american culture and ours. We would be very ssmart in examining everything from USA and then only adopting it.

I have not only been educated partly in the US but also was a faculty in the US colleges. I know the standard over there.

Let me say it bluntly:

NOTHING FROM THE AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM BELONGS IN INDIA.

It will ruin the most potent force in this country. Our intelligent youngsters.

Thanks for invite Disha,

What do we have that we can call our own is the question we must keep in forefront.

Americans are not Indian and vv.

The education system in India surely requires change but copy paste would be the worst idea, in my views.

Yes, certainly. We must learn technology from them.Technically they are the masters and very much superior than any country of the world.

All the times it becomes very sad to hear about our cultural values, our ancient education systems, we had invented a zero,etc.....etc...?.What is this? We accept their superiority in technology and this is so many times, so many persons has pointed out that we are 10 years behind them in technology.

More than 50% our Engineering/Technology collages having just no practical performing facility,30% collages having very old type of practical labs. which needs to be updated, and the rest having facility for limited subjects only. Every year by the mercy of educational ministry so many new collages are coming with out proper practical lab facility with the aim of business only and producing engineers with poor practical knowledge. Many time in Industry an I.T.I. QUALIFIED fitter is a key person of projects and HOD of maintenance. This shows poor performance of an engineer in the practical field. This is an interesting fact that we (India)are having the biggest youth power in the world but we still lagging in technology and our growth is limited up to 9%(data as per the ministry) and that to also possible with the foreign collaborations in technology.

Our Educational Ministry must take necessary steps to prevent this other wise our wise our cream youth power may migrate from India.

Yes, it can. But the govt. should support NRI to come to India  and take up challenges. As we all know, red-tapism makes whole effort tardy and non-implementable.

yas, american style of teaching can atleast put students to more practical approach rather than theoritical approach. results- students can easily get in depth of things dealing with, easy to understand and can know the importance of stuffs they deal with.

The american model of technical education focuses heavily on the practical aspects of implementation. It is a good model of education. However, there are various other models of education and some of these models are already being followed by the Indian system. Thus, if any improvement is required, the existing models need to be re-visited to find the lacunae, if any and also try to incorporate the elements of the american education model and other countries education models in the future. This will take some time to implement but it will lead to better improvements in the future.

I am in total agreement with Disha on the subject. At the same time proper future planing need to be done in order to streamline the whole system as done by Mr Kapil Sibbal recently.

I think it will happen but will take time.

I totally agree with Ms.Disha that our higher education system is in need of an overhaul of sorts but do not see the point in looking towards the US for a rolemodel. Instead, we can look inwards and find great examples in IIT's and REC's. The fact that other institutes do not follow the practices set forth by these leading institutes is binding our higher education system.

No way.

The Concept of One country can not be applicable to other country.

Also i want to say just leave to be the slave of them. Be your own master.

We can only understand the things that are in our language and compatibility. however if we want to understand the things that are in other languages we have to convert that concept in our language otherwise there will be a lack of understanding.

In my view, we in developing countries should not expect to follow the research model that led to the scientific enterprise of the United States and elsewhere. Rather, we need to adapt and develop technologies appropriate to our local circumstances, help strengthen education, and expand our roles as advisers in both government and industry. In this way, we can prevent the brain-drain that results when scientists are not in touch with the problems of their home countries or when they face indifference--and poor financial support--from their governments. He says like indian people stood first in all activities because we learn all this much earlier than them.

it is a matter of broad discussion but i think why should we follow others while we have ability to do so.from past we have more able to teach .we have only think about that there is no interfare in education system .its not a political field we have only think to some difficulties in itand how we remove it better.

If the question is should we follow the american way of technical education the answer is no. The difference in customs and more importantly work-ethics between the two countries are huge. Even the social structure is differs for eg. they are more inclined to acquiring debts than relying on parents for financial assistance and many more such differences. But yes our education system should live up to the standards required by the Indian and global markets. The present education system barring a handful of institutes are lagging far behind when it comes to availing proper technology, resources and practical exposure required by youngsters to turn them in through professionals

To develop India, we need a aggressive and educated task-force to plan, implement and monitor it.  Tech education may be a small part of it, but the quicker implementation is an larger issue.  When we are having a uneducated politicians whats an use of having Americanised Indian techiee?

We do have plenty of resources, but the problem lies somewhere else only.  A policymaker who must be a visionary is highly short sighted.  Blaming only technical people is not  going to solve the issue.

Given a chance, use of existing pool of talent with proper vision will definitely rip-off the benefits better than any other developed country.

Disha, Thanks for referral.

Our education is okay. But, what we need is to reinforce the application part more in practicals whatsoever be the domain of education. May be a Gap analysis done to bridge it.

Better to go back to original ancient indian education model ... which was perfectly and scientificaly made for us .... do not follow any foreign model which is made for them ...

We people are multi culture, multi language, and this condition is not exist in any other part of world ...

Our original education system was the major hurdle in British succession in India ...

That is why Lord Warren Hestings reported to British Crown

" I WENT TO MOST OF THE PART OF THIS COUNTRY INDIA AND OBSERVED THAT EVERY PERSON IS SATISFIED AND THERE IS NO URGE FOR ANY LAVISH THING, WE ARE NOT ABLE TO CONVERT THEM AND GET THEIR SUPPORT AND THE ROOT BEHIND THIS IS THEIR EDUCATION SYSTEM WHICH IS MORE SPRITUAL AND PATRIOTIC THEY ARE COHESIVELY BONDED BY EDUCATION AND CULTURE AND FOLLOW THESE VALUES IN THEIR ROUTINE LIFE. UNLESS WE DESTROY THIS EDUCATION SYSTEM WE CANNOT SUCCEED HERE"

These words are not actually same as written by Warren Hestigs ... but crux is same.

believe in your cultural values.  I can suggest only.

I dont thinks it is a a better solution to copy American style in Indian system. Disha, you are right in your point. We need some overhauling in our education system which is under consideration and the progress is slow.

Actually ouy technical education is better but we have lack of practicle knowledge. We can improve in technology by doing practicle work in variuos fields. It is possible only when we give priority to practicle knowledge in place of theoritical.

One hat cannot fit all. We need to learn from what developed countries have done and not ape them, else we will remain in the same situation as we are after an initial spurt.

What we need is a change mechanism customized to our own geography, we need to make sure that the technical education is in line with the new vision/need and requirement of our country, this vision needs to be revised every decade to keep it alive and aligned with growth.

Without a framework of vision and future even if we adopt a very robust financing model, we will lead ourselves into a rat hole where the education will be come expensive and outdated.
