If we able to predict such a thing then there will be very much help in making buiseness strategy. What type of data we require to make prediction. Is currently any work in data mining of this type is going on anywhere.

I have worked as an associate analyst and done a lot of number crunching. Recession can be predicted way ahead of time provided you have your numbers and data correct. Numbers like consumer spending, bank lending, unemploymeny numbers and many more parameters tell this way ahead in advance of a recession. But you have to work with an honest person not some guy who is too optimistic or too pessimistic

Five predictions for recession

1. Educated and highly-skilled workers getting 2nd and 3rd jobs to finance their lives.

For example, people with college degrees and professional licenses working 2nd or 3rd shift at restaurants or doing lots of extra consulting side work.

2. Consumers will be spending less money on Luxury items such as maids, yachts, underground cockfighting... and basically...

... the depreciation in domestic expenditure on Luxury Items is directly proportionate to Charlie Sheen's daily hooker budget. You know that the Economy starts to suck ass when he has to settle for crackwhore handjobs from Compton instead of high-priced barely legal Beverly Hills blowjobs.

3. People will resort to DIY instead of purchased services, which means.... Basically you will see people customizing their own homes, cars, and possessions instead of spending more money on professionals to work for them.

During the great depression, one of the most successful companies (stock-market-wise) was Singer.

They make sewing machines, and during tough times, instead of buying Armani suits, many of us will be pimping out our parents' retro clothes and old-school prom gear. Plus, companies like Home Depot and hardware stores will experience increased revenue.

4. Expect more Piracy and Bootlegging! ... The porn industry will be pumping out more customized niche content. DVD distribution has been plummeting, and digital downloads are replacing every brick-and-mortar porn shop.

File-sharing programs such as torrents will be used more to advertise user-generated, customized niche content. Recessions usually cause people to masturbate more instead of spending hundreds of dollars on high-priced prostitutes.

5. Consolidation of Powers in every industry will continue at a more pronounced pace. More buyouts, mergers, and monopolization will occur as corporate fat cats will try to monopolize and squeeze every penny out of consumers' pockets. The intensity of competition will increase, and many old industries will continue to wipe out small businesses.

The demand for innovation will increase as it becomes harder to compete in every industry for new businesses. Fortunately, this will cause manufacturers to create better products with higher reliability, greater safety, newer features, and better prices for consumers.

During this recession, we need to position ourselves in ways that will enable us to profit tremendously from the upcoming growth spurt after these adjustments occur. Get some new skills that are esoteric and will be in high demand. Invest for the long haul in conservative stocks, and diversify your money in different industries.
