If you started your career as a software programmer can you become a better Business Analyst. I had this debate with lot of people whether I should go for a person who is in the coding domain or a person who has the business acumen.

What do you think?

Developers can understand the full Developement as well as the Design Stage in any Developement Projects, So After being as a Developer for around 1 year time he will have Technical Expertise over the Subject and also Functional expertise as he will be able to relate how things are going on in the process, Just can perform as a Better Business Analyst than a Non-Technical person.

I don't agree with you Ashish, Business analysts invest a lot of time interacting with business users in terms of understanding processes, and other complexities which are outside the scope of project where as computer programmers tend to invest most of their time working on software that will be used by people. So such business acumen, communication and relationship skills are mandatory over technical skills.

I believe that 'A developer becomes better analyst',and i myself have done the same.

I started my carer as a Developer in an insurance company, learned the domain, took a few insurance certifications and have converted my self to a Business Analyst Life Insurance in an IT company.

And through out my journey i have observed that a person who can understand the code, who has an idea about how the project will be/should be  coded can understand the projects better and can give more valuable inputs for the better ment of the project.

Presently i am working on a Testing Project, and i can see that people who have an idea of coding, can understand and analyse a defect better than others.

Thanks and Regards

Yes, I am 100% aggreed to this topic. Because developer are at the core of the business , they know what actually the customer need and what improvements should be possible. And in terms of Business - A developer can generate different types of solutions for a problem in front of the Customer wherever a simple Business man cant.Thats not the only one reason ...there are many more --Developer are technical in nature & can think out of Box.

If programmer is involved in many IT projects than I don't understand why he can't be because he would be able to better plan a project and have the technical know how of how things work, what did go wrong and be able to prevent bad issues that you’ve dealt with as a developer from affecting your own projects.

I don't feel so... Anyone can be good analyst if the person is having good understanding of the domain. IT skills are definitely required but not at developers level...

After lot of debate I am inclined to say only 20% of Developers have potential to become good IT BAs. The problem developer may face when he becomes a BA, they may see everything from the point of a technical person which is not always the best solution for the business ,there are different aspects which define the final decision.

A Developer can be a good Technical Analyst as they may be technically sound. Developer can assist a Business Analyst for the technical requirements in the business and act as a role of System Analyst – they provide technical definition of the IT solution.  Whereas, Business Analysts need to interact with various probable clients for gathering business requirements, good understanding of business flows, documentation, and a very good in communication.

Business Analysis Stands for both Functional & Technical aspect....not only for Technical point. Iit is possible for a developer, if he extend his knowledge on Functional/Business Scope.........
