Following the path of mobile-rich countries like Malaysia and UK, India is also planning to adopt ENUM (electronic numbering) technology to avoid migration from 10-digit mobile number to an 11-digit mobile number. ENUM technology can be a catalyst for DoT (Department of Telecom) to meet the growing requirement of the mobile industry.

Telephone number mapping is the process through which the telephone network (public-switched telephone network) is unified with the Internet address using the Internet protocol (IP). ENUM technology will be similar to the model available in Internet connectivity whereby each Internet connection has a unique IP address.

Do you also think that e-numbering can stop mobile number's migration to 11-digit?

I think yes. DoT should try this out. There are many advantages in this approach compared to the migration to 11 digit number. It would be really great to have all the services using single number and this also helps in increasing the usage of data services in India

Thanks for the referral!!

There are technologies that could be adopted to meet the growing demand but migration to 11 digit is an easier route. With more than eight to nine operators in a single circle and a couple of new operators likely to launch services, India needs to meet the crunch. If countries like Malaysia and UK are getting benefits of it, why shouldn't India give a try? India is one of the fastest growing countries in mobile space.....

well if free up other number 1, 7 etc and limit the capacity provided to land lines we can avoid the migration without anydifficulty.... going to a 11 digit based number system would bad really bad for consumers ......

why was trai made in the first place to uphold consumers grievance rite?!

The whole thing about the length of numbers is really silly - the new numbering system should only really apply to new numbers if it gets implemented.

We could simply prepend 0 to the numbering system and eliminate roaming within India, so the cellphone prefix would become 09 instead of 9X: the only other country that I can think of where "long distance" comes in to play for calling interstate cellphones is the USA, and IMO that's not an ideal model to follow. Of course, the operators would probably never go for something that would decrease their revenue even further. In Finland a typical cellphone number is 10 digits (012-345-6789), similar to India, but we can even get a number as short as 7 (012-3456)
