EcoCa, a little-known company in London is challenging Tata Nano as the cheapest car by rolling out a 340 cc two-seater petrol car for as little as $2,200 (Rs 1 lakh) that it says will still ensure healthy profit margins for the makers. Being a small engineering and design company, it is now scouting for a joint-venture partner in India to build the car with the same name. Their price target of $2,200 which will also help us earn healthy profit margins.

EcoCa plans to utilise India’s low-cost manufacturing base to keep the price down for both global and domestic markets.

* It is developed with an investment of around 8 million pounds (Rs 60 crore) and inspired by the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, EcoCa comes with convertible roof and automatic gearbox which means no need to change gears.
* The prototype is made of lightweight, a high strength ABS plastic, which has good resistance to impact, heat and chemicals. * It weighs only 330 kg against Nano’s 635 kg and delivers a fuel efficiency of 27-28 km/litre of petrol against Nano’s 23.6 km/litre under standard test conditions.
* It has a top speed of 70 kmph, much lower than Nano's 103 kmph.

The car has cleared the frontal crash tests in Europe like the Nano and carries options of front airbags. They want to build 1,800 cars per month, which will keep the price at $2200. Higher volumes would further bring down prices. There is a definite potential of micro cars in India with such a vast population yet to have access to any form of mobility.

Yes i support kailash argument... more over Ecoca cc is also very less compare to Tata nano. If we compare the Vehicle cc what Nano is providing and what ECOCA is providing it doesnt sense of less cost. And what about the safety...for nano itself there are lot of concerns about safety...

If u take the bookings of Tata nano when it had launched i think booking for the vehicle is not upto the mark. So the cheap doesnt mean at all for the customer ..they will see safety, life of the vehicle..performance & service wht the company is providing.

Wow ! a car of one lakh!!! This will definitely shut down markets of NANO coming not only in 2 lakhs but also will many defaults. This car has cleared frontal tests in Europe which means it has advanced European standards than TATA's Indian standards. Definitely this car will give a stiff competition to NANo. Not only competition, it will defeat it...

No the impact will be very less or nothing at all - price is not the only aspect which drives a customer to buy a car. Other values would include brand name, service centers, after sales support, durability, adaptability to Indian road conditions and the overall running cost etc. If Tata's Nano is able to create a niche segment it doesnt necessarily mean that other manufacturers can follow suit and make a success game. Think of 25 years back when maruti launched 800 the Sipani Dolphin a similiar priced car went blank from the market.

It won't be a problem for NANO. TATA is a brand name. It has its own loyal customers. Everyone knows its quality standards and for Ecoca, it will a tough journey altogether since its a little known European company. It has to make its popularity in Indian markets before it can compete NANO. Also, people have perceptions that any cheap car has some defaults.EcoCa is cheaper than TATA. People may perceive it has more defaults than TATA! So, it will give competition only in price not in quality because of which in long run, it won't be able to face TATA any more. But one good news is TATA has set a new segment altogether and we'll be seeing more and more players altogether.
