German scientists have warned that energy saving bulbs should not be left on for long periods or be positioned near a person's head as they emit poisonous substances. Many reasearches come and go and we are left with many conclusions and warnings. We never get to know the effect nor do we observe anything harmful happening. Do such studies have any importance? Should such studies be considered seriously?

Mam, when someone publishes a study or research it means there is fair amount of truth into it. You just cannot brush off the matter saying it is fake. If so then you should resonate.

I do not think so. Many studies about usage of cell phones have come up. Many things are said they remain just a study and nothing in particular ever happens. so I do not mind such studies coming and going ..

Researchers from the University of California
pulverized multicolored LED lights, traffic signal lights, and automobile head and brake lights and then analyzed its chemical content. They discovered that low-intensity red LEDs contained up to 8 times the amount of lead allowed under law. While white bulbs had a lower lead content than their coloured counterparts, they still had high levels of nickel.

In addition, the LED bulbs and their associated parts were also found to contain arsenic, copper, and other metals that have been linked to different cancers, neurological damage, kidney disease, hypertension, skin rashes etc. in humans.

The study found that the production, use and disposal of LEDs all present health risks, which the public should be made aware of. LEDs are currently not classified as toxic, and are disposed of in conventional landfills.

to some extent yes...compressed gases in the energy saving bulbs when emit light can harm skin ....its like getting exposed to harmful radiations being at home...

Yes it can be because some CFL have mercury, but some don,t have. It is clearly mentioned of good companies like havells CFL (energy saving lights). Thanks Adrija for debate.

Thank you Bindu for referal. I think we can not question the study. We can only ask for remedial measures if any and follow them instead of questioning the study.

But I just believe what the science tells me and it tells me in every piece of literature and every statistic that I’ve read that mercury is not a good thing. The mercury contained in the bulbs is completely different from the mercury our parents used to experiment with at school. That was a liquid form of mercury that has to be ingested before it really harms you, but this powder mercury is inhaled. It goes into the air and vaporizes like a gas, and you inhale it and then it’s absorbed into your lungs. It’s an accumulative metal, it just keeps building and building in your bloodstream, so the more you are exposed to it the sicker you become

There are ill-effects on usage of CFL. Ill-effects are even more if the bulb blasts or breaks falling on the ground. Dr. Havas’ research has established that the mercury contained in one CFL bulb can contaminate 190,000 litres (>50,000 U.S. gallons) of water beyond the level considered safe for drinking. Imagine what it would do to the food supply of a restaurant. Should the restaurant be evacuated so that the patrons do not get a dose of this toxic material? One would hope that business people would be concerned about the risk of having a Hazardous Waste cleanup problem should a CFL be broken as well as the potential for further injury to folks who have an Acquired Brain Injury, epilepsy, seizures, etc.

baasically energy saving bulbs are filled with gases to decrease the energy consumption instead of a traditional tungesten method.Using of sodium vapour lamp is so harmful tht it affects all life forms but we still use it.these studies are malicious to divert people attention from energy conservation.S i accept strict manufacturing defects should be addressed to prevent defective parts.

Energy saving has to be opposite to excess of radiation (of undesired emissions, too). But manufacturing defects should be checked.

every study on a subject bears the opposite views after say, ten years. all the postulates are being rewritten after a considerable amount of time has elapsed. what we can do is get on with what we are comfortable/reasonable for the present. yes?

There may be some truth in it say for example geting exposed under such light for 8 hours may in long run be carcinogenic provided done on a regular basis.Bindu I tend to agree with your point of view.

I agree with Bindu. though the CFL consists of a tube filled with mercury vapour which emits ultraviolet (UV) light when an electric current passes through it. The UV light excites the phosphor coating on the inside of the tubing, which emits visible light. This type of bulb consumes a quarter of the energy of an incandescent bulb, while producing the same amount of light, lasting up to ten times as long and emitting 90 percent less heat.

The drawback is that they contain mercury – a toxic substance, causing problems with disposal and health.

As a preventive measures, these bulbs should not be used for study and also as a night bulb in the bed room.

If CFL bulb light harms than why conventional tube light also not harmful?Which light is not harmful? Somebody says and we trust it is not fair.Every electric bulbs emits fotons means light particals.CFL and tube light also emits white due to mercury oxide layer inner side of glass tube.It works like curtain of white color.Sun light is not harmful?Your TV,COMPUTER MONITOR,PLASMA TV all are working on same principal that is cathod ray oscilloscope which emits cathod rays, harmful to retina of your eye.Every thing has plus and minus point so we can not leave them.I have not trust on your matter.I advise you to use LCD LAMPS,TV etc to get freedom from all these harmful products.

I know that it contains Mercury which is harmful to the environment during disposal, regarding its causes to our health ..no idea. Hope someone will clear it with some logic! thanks Mr. Danke fo sharing.
