The Indian Institutes of Technology – kharagpur initiated a project last year for setting up a medical college and a 750 bedded state of art hospital in collaboration with University of California. But recently central government decided that (IITs) cannot start medical schools without a nod from the scam-tainted Medical Council of India (MCI).

The decision comes as a big blow to the premier engineering institutes' expansion plans. Medical education in our country is completely controlled by MCI which has set guidelines specifically separating it from other form of education, In US there are reputed universities that impart Technical education as well as Medical education in a more successful manner (includes highly acclaimed UCLA & MIT).

Providing cross-stream collaboration with engineering medicine through reputed institutions like IIT would be a challenge and is highly desired for a billion strong developing nation like India.

Government of India should allow the IITs through an act of parliament /Resolution/Amendment in the current MCI act for starting any such medical course with complete freedom to innovate and bring changes in the medical and healthcare delivery system.

Such collaborations are required today as most of the healthcare services are technologically driven today & necessary mixing is required in the overall skill of the graduating class.

Such education will give more dimensions in  treatment and effective management of patients problems.

Medical education in india is becoming a restricted domain and is also effecting the healthcare requirement of common man, recently government introduced the rural medical course (BHRC) which clearly signifies that Indian government has failed in last 60 years from independence to bring the desired healthcare facility to common people. Most of the professions have seen tremendous changes in their educational and research activities but healthcare still remains an un-experimented area (un-touched area for innovation and technology application). The isolation of clinical profession from Medical to Non-Medical domain is huge and creates a gap that needs to be addressed. India is country with so many and huge aspiration, we cannot leave the future of health profession to a bunch of egoistic & self centered health professionals. Such a blend of education is necessary to understand and solve the real nature of life and its impact on technology after all every science has a basic objective to improve human life. We all should be thanking to the people from IIT to take such initiative which is in every way full fills the dream of youngistaan.

Ofcourse, it will benefit both, ie, Medicos as well as Engineers. These days the Medical Care is Tech driven and if IIT with Med Coleege &its affiliated Hospital are colocated, then the down time of Biomed Instruments can be reduced considerably. Also, the super specialists can also get on the job training of various types of Maintainance of the High Tech Equipments they handle so frequntly.

I am putting my point of view here becuase there are only two options to choose from. IIT is a engineering stream, it can strenghthen reserch and can fulfill demands for better equipments but running a regular course in medicine will be asking for too much.

About the MCI, it has been overburdened with many areas. It should be made only a licensing and and standard monitoring body for its members.

There can be no big hypocrisy than autonomous institutions .

No this will degrade the value of medicine. There are few institute who are know for its medical importance. Getting a degree from IIT will not add any value....

Technology is a tool for medicine and not a part of profession.......
