I just had to create this debate, just when I woke up and saw news online, I was surprised to see something about Google which immediately caught my attention, and Google is one such word which I follow religiously like what they do and what they are coming up with.

Google which always does something new all the time has now introduced new service called Google buzz where users of gmail can share photos, videos and status updates just like Facebook and Twitter which are the current leading lot interms of users in their kitty, and in the current context of time this has somewhat lately weakened the position of Google which it dominated till Facebook and twitter came.

Google buzz is really a bold attempt from Google, and it is said that a lot of features resembles Facebook and it looks like a direct challenge to Facebook. And Facebook which recently on it's 6th birthday has announced that it has now 400 million users. So what do you think people can Google buzz create buzz in social networking? can they really take on Facebook and Twitter? Do share your views on this?

I think they can create a bit buzz here, and Google Buzz is an ambitious project for Google, but then when have you seen Google take on projects that don't challenge established rules and paradigms. Google also seems to be on a quest to dominate every form of technology, and not at all content to leave the lucrative and exploding social networking market to the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

Though Google backed Orkut was there, but orkut was fading away like anything where most of its users are on Facebook and twitter, so google thought it would be better to combine its email service Gmail and google buzz which offers social networking, and you also don't have to invite any of your friends, you will get friends automatically on the chat patterns on your gmail and with gmail already having 176 million users it will be easy for them integrating a service with gmail than starting out and out something new which would have  taken more time to see the results, but to compete with giants like Facebook and twitter in social networking will be difficult as facebook has almost 400 million users and twitter also gaining popularity like anything. But then we are talking about Google here which almost the whole world depends on its search engine...and I believe that they can create a real buzz with Google buzz :)

Hi, sonam its really good to see news which most of us even don't know is already getting discussed on social platform like this, and this is the power of social networking which is real time, you'll get to know things as and when it happens, and that is what google is trying to cash in on and in that regard facebook and twitter have already garnerd the majority of the audience which is out there, and I just love the facebook features. And to me Google is entering a bit too late, with Facebook having more than 400 million users it is almost impossible for google to crack facebook in social networking as people are really addicted to facebook with its features and apps, though the best part about buzz is something which people already know in the form of gmail, they don't have to go anywhere, and I think this was a smart move, but then just imagine if people start to use facebook for sending emails as it has all the features which it needs, Google is not in a good position to create buzz, and Google should stop entering into every segment of technology, and it will do more good if Google at times thinks logical than based on its algorithms.

Well, not in full fledge. C u can buzz only in gmail account if u have it. unlike Facebook or Twitter where u can buzz any time. So the process is good.

Hi Aaron I agree with you, even though there are many social networking sites goggle will create buzz soon. It will take sometime to reach the users. And I love the sentence you have mentioned 'Good companies do a few things right and great companies do all the important things right'. Best suited for this debate.

Thanks.....

This time we expect Google to put in practice what Facebook and Twitter taught them and what due to platform limitations they couldn't implement in Orkut. Independent access to Buzz as a service(apart from within Gmail) and an auto-migration of Orkut users and subsequently abandoning of Orkut might help Google optimize its social networking resources.

Google Buzz will make an impact because its based on the idea of collaboration. Collaboration is the main point of emphasis for many social networking sites moving forward. However, in order for Google Buzz to buzz it will take time because many individuals do not have the same size network as they do already established on for example, facebook or twitter. The concept behind Google Buzz is designed to collaborate other google applications and tools, and if for example, google wave can be incorporated into buzz, you will people really start building their networks as they did with facebook and twitter.

When google launched its search engine, it had minimal competition but  even if it had it would have been no hurdle in its way because its not what google does matters but how google does  it. Google has done with launching 'BUZZ' something that most people are comparing with twitter and facebook, but you cannot exactly compare with either. Its not all inclusive like facebook nor simple message based like twitter. In a context it is a simplification of group emailing , where a virtual team was supposed to send replies to groups and gmail interwined all replies into one link in the inbox. This may be only a start and you never no what google has in its plan for future. Some of the users like me dont like doing fancy stuff on facebook or increasing the number of followers on twitter , we like only our messages to be heard by the people we care for and this is exactly what buzz will do for me. There will surely come a time in future when facebook and twitter will go down as people will find other interesting stuff to do over the network, and believe me there are, now also. In such a scenario its apps like buzz which will still not only survive but become an integral part of a person's life as gmail has become once.

I support the initiative  by Google Inc because of a variety of reasons .Most notably of them is that this isn't a mere copy of facebook or twitter or  anything else but is more than an integration of the two. Also the timeline is perfect as the growth of Android in 2010-11 is expected to be all time high and the Google  gaming consoles rumours start coming in and the Admob work gets competed , one can just be excited about all this !!

ORkut was a pretty much a copy of a typical social networking site but so was lively .In 3 months Google stopped the service of Lively which was a mere copy of second life , my point here is that Google knows best of the failures that can happen or are happening and when is the right to exist  .But one thing is for sure the  research and learning done even with a simple query at any point of time to the ultimate record of human behaviour on the cloud ,Google does this best :)

After all the best of men are known to think and act on equations and emotions .

Google, as a company seldom forecast, it financial growth and is tight lipped about its planned product releases. Consider its phenomenal growth since the company founded by 2 individuals, 11 years ago. Today it has is over 22 Billion turnover, storage space and sheer processing power of well over 200,000 servers that will enable it to do just about anything, with the Web. Full of surprises, it is one of most innovative and clever enterprise with a growth that seems unthinkable. I think, Google will grow into an ubiquitous and invincible force financially and more so socially, in view of fact that its main focus has always been on users

It would be easy to say that we have enough sites that already do this and do not need another one. The problem is, none of them are Google! Of course, it will take some time, but Google will eventually compare to Twitter and the King - Facebook. Does this mean the end of article writing and distribution? Not hardly. But those who have figured out how to combine SEO with SMO, will succeed online during the next five years. After that, who knows!

I definitely agree with Sonam Kapoor regarding Google BUZZ.I strongly appreciate this attempt made by Google.Users from different areas can easily share their photos, videos & comments as they do in twitter & facebook.

I am also very much sure about the success of Google BUZZ.At last i want to say all the users to participate in BUZZ & make the difference.Thank you.

Regards,

Sumeet Biswal.

I, too, was disturbed by the way Google decided to launch Buzz. Unfortunately, I did not realize that using the link at the bottom of the page only removed the Buzz link from the page instead of completely disabling it as I assumed it did. In fact, I just found that to prevent Google from keeping/storing our web (search?) history, me must first enable Web History and then “pause” it. Steps to disable Web History: 1. Go to your account settings-separate from your gmail account settings. 2. Click on the Dashboard link. 3. Scroll to Web History. 4. Click on Remove Items or clear Web History. You may first have to “enable” Web History even though it is likely that you will have seen your most recent searches listed on your Dashboard. 5. Click on Clear entire Web History. 6. Click Clear History confirmation–It should say just above that that this action will also pause Web History. 7. The following page should show that your Web History is now paused. 8. Clear your browser cache and then reload or return to your Dashboard. Under Web History it should now show it as Disabled.

It is interesting to note that Google was forced to retreat on its new Buzz social networking service after its first attempt to quell a growing outcry over privacy issues failed to silence its critics. The company also issued a public apology over the affair, which has given a new and very public focus to long-simmering concerns about the amount of information Google collects about its users and how it uses it. Google said that Buzz would no longer automatically set up an online social network for users, by drawing from the list of people they most frequently exchange e-mail with. That feature, announced last week when the service was launched, was roundly criticiszed. The backlash over Buzz, and Google’s scramble to contain it, has exposed a flaw in its approach to launching services. While that trial and error approach has generally succeeded in making Google’s services highly responsive, it has left the company open to criticism on privacy, since information about millions of its users was exposed publicly before it had a chance to respond.

Google’s agreed that its decision to make automatic user lists public created a great deal of concern and that an earlier attempt to deal with the problem by making it easier for users to hide their information was clearly not enough. Google said it would give Gmail users, who are automatically enrolled in Buzz, the facility to disable it.

Google is follower in this segment. So they have to first catchup with the leader facebook. To see it (Google) buzz need to wait for a while.

Hi Sonam Google, though a global leader , is currently trying hard to be the leader in this part of world, and is still to catchup with others as Yahoo purely in terms of numbers. Creating a platform is just one thing but making it acceptable and known as others would be a tough task. Yes, social networking has tremendous power but limitations too.

A quick point  on the time line and algo of Google

Twitter is a 5 year old start up and gained tremendous momentum in users ( the ones registering ) in the last 6 -8 months. Statistics show that now the new ones registering has declined and activity in terms of tweets has gained. In other words we have  a big deal of users who are now active on twitter but there are lots of others who had expected something else or just couldn't adjust in the twitter space .Isn't this a right time for a company to enter the game which see's the world  with maths ??

Facebook has 400 million people facebooking at some level or the other , hypothetically i assume all of them facebook all the time ( from their PC's , most notably photos and web links) We had lots of other social networking  sites around the time of facebook ,something else compelled 400 million to use to actively .

What if the UI , the outreach ,the "real time-ness", and business model was a lot better ,

will the world not switch over to Buzz and Buzz all the time ? Do we want to lose out on an oppurtunity where in we can proudly  say , we were the first to Buzz  the way some of us were first to use gmail instead of Yahoo mail ? We are talking about Google here and its a fantastic company which believes in the power of the web.( and also in maths n algos :)

Google has launched its new application Google Buzz, its another attempt to take on the social web. While its previous attempts of Orkut and Google Friend Connect didn't fly, Google hopes that Buzz will fly and compete with facebook & other social networking sites.

Definitely in today’s web era, the way we communicate has certainly moved beyond the conventional way of email and chat and Google seems to be trying to cash in on that. With the launch of Google Buzz, Google wants its Gmail users to do their social tasks (like photo sharing, video sharing, status updates and more such tasks) without leaving Gmail. Google Buzz is not a differently maintained platform, it is added in users gmail accounts. The top social media analyst Jeremiah Owyang says "It is a direct challenge to Facebook, in particular". Gmail have 400 million users, this huge amount of gmail users can make popular the Google buzz. Google Buzz can create privacy woes for Gmail users, and for Twitter it is beneficail in short term because it amplify tweets amongs gmail users, but not in long term because Twitter user can quit from tweeting. But the main problem with google application, that they are not user freindly & most important, they are linking one sites to all their sites, which may or may not acceptable to user.
