"Honour" killings, which tend to feature in Middle Eastern, Turkish and south-east Asian communities, derive their motivation from the idea of shame and honour within conservative and religious frameworks. The key problems are that because it's perceived as a "cultural issue" and communities are reluctant to come forward, progress has been slow.

We need to look at the bigger picture – namely what leads the perpetrators to carry out these acts, and what the government is planning to do about them. The Association of Chief Police Officers estimate that 17,000 "honour" crimes are committed each year.

So users, do you think honour killings can be stopped by better policing?

Honour Killings can be reduced by a better policing, that's the way to control it on the face, but same time this issue need to be sorted out by social awareness, like campains and all, Most Importantly to stop the old practice of the asking permission to the head of the socity,That creates a dilema in peoples mind,Stop such practices, that will give confidence to the family members to face any such issues because. This should be process for long time untill things get settiled compleatly.

These people do honor killing just to satisfy their ego....they have nothing to do with prestige of the family....after doing a murder or two of your family Does your family stand on a high in society.....they are the weeds of the society...and everyone knows what weeds can do......so not only govt or police...every individual should contribute such that these things do not happen........

This type of issues shall have to sorted out by social awareness. Society is the powerful police. If society put's pressure on this type of things it will play great impact. There are so many laws, but still crime happens, so police cant control all the crimes specially in the country of big populations. Society is the best police.

These kind of things will never stop in country like India, unlike or until people realise coz through law and rules and policing people wont adhere... So its just their conscious need to play... Even strict laws are useless coz with the population we have ... we cant chase people..

No and it is not in other countries. It happens in India with more than 500 killings happening with the help of electric wires tied around neck of women and due to low voltage if she does not die cut with knives. Police are powerless with politicians trying to justify them as tradition. We need strong legislation and willingness on the part of the government to act.

Police cant be everywhere.. and the killers are usually the people who are closely associated with the victims.. its usually their relatives.. its very hard for the police to stop these killings until and unless the couple approaches for Protection. Moreover the accused do not consider it as a crime and feel it to be an honour to eliminate the person who brought them defame. Basically the mindset has to change. This will take time..but government should initiate programs in educating people.. Policing can help only if Protection is seeked..
