I believe that HRM is a technical field. Hence so manytimes I refer HR as HUMAN RELATION ENGINEERING.It is Engineering because which Human, a most important component of any company, will most productively fit in which place is called engineering.

I am against the whole topic because its not the expertise in a functional area that makes you the leader of a company , rather its a person's holistic knowledge about the working of the company that should earn him the position of the CEO. I have come across application engineers who have a good knowledge of the customer base and I have come across sales personal who have good people skill and tremendous rapport across the employee ladder. The same can be said about people belonging to every functional area. The jist is that he or she should be capable of meeting the short term and long term goals of the company through his ability to lead the head of the department of individual functional teams. If some one can do the above, he can be made a CEO. This is again the ideal state The fact is Politics plays a big part in each organisation and accordingly Finance and Sale & Marketing team tends to have the best clout in a company . Hence the chances of them getting to the role CEO is higher than those from other functional area.

Appointment of CEOs is a highly complex exercise. The functional background of the aspirants could be just one factor. Political factors such as loyalty to the organizations or the ability to play an effective bargaining role between various power cliques may play a bigger role. So, if the HR senior managers are in a position to swing the political factors in their favor they do stand a chance to lead the organization. In earlier times, HR people had relatively lesser importance. So it required a heavyweight such as Rusi Modi with a HR background to become the CEO. Now, as rightly pointed out, HR function is becoming increasingly more important, Therefore, HR people stand a better chance.

An interesting debate that has been on for a long time. HR has traditionally been viewed as a cost-center and hence HR heads rarely made it to the C levels. This has now undergone a change where now HR is viewed as a resource generating profile and hence the varied profiles in HR we see today.... employee engagement, talent acquisition and management, etc. HR now has a larger role to play in ensuring the success of an organization. Apart from this, it is essential for a CXO to be able to take decisions in any department, whether finance, marketing, production or supply chain for that matter. Nowadays, a different outlook taken by HR professionals by involving themselves in various functions of the organization has helped things a bit. HR heads are now being considered for C level positions.. a good sign since the most valued resource of an organization is its Human Resource!

HR is no longer a resource alone it is far beyond now a days. It's of power and potential. Therefore any Top Management Executives could no longer ignore the importance of the Manpower. Further you shall see the advert requirements are started mentioning as HR Business Partner. In my personal Opinion a person who is from the HR background will have the sound organization cum business knowledge which supports the question very well. Thanks for the wonderful debate.

There is a designation called as Chief People Officer, (CPO) which is the highest C Level positions heard so far for HRs. But all the organizations don't Have this designation, most commonly used ones are VP HR, Head HR, Director, HR, etc. Onicra gives the designation of Chief Human Resource Officer.

CEO is not only a people Management. Nothing but a King of all the operations. HR Head will be there to run the people management, Yes HE/SHE will be the one person who will understand the need of the company. But not exact Technical issues in other operations.

HR’s cannot become CEO’s, Most of the HR’s are people oriented they are not business oriented, In 100 HR’s only 20 will have capacity of becoming a CEO but in 100 CEO’s 80 can be good HR’s. To become a CEO it is the mixture of all knowledge, but for an HR it is more in to People Management.

Sorry Ms Sawant, It is not the Question of ," To be or Not to be". It is based, more on the Practicality. Otherwise , HR has equal potential to evolve a system to identify talents, make procedure/SOP/Guideline to bring out the bests in HR for the Organization. But, when the question of execution / Operation comes, it is under question mark. Certain domain they may fit well but, in most of the other field, they can not meet the expectation. Can I tell you one thing ? A similar aspiration was viewed sometime back in the Armed forces as to see Services Generals as COAS (Chief of army staff). Yet, it is to come out. So let us follow practical way what an organization really look for & fit a man there to execute.
