According to a study by the Motion Picture Distributors Association (MPDA), India is the fourth largest illegal downloader of online content. The research says, India trails only the U.S., Britain and Canada in online copyright infringement. It says online piracy of film and television content in India is mainly through file-sharing networks like BitTorrent and cyberlockers, or web-based file hosts such as RapidShare or HotFile.

This report is based on tracking illegal downloading IP addresses on P2P (Peer to Peer) networks, showed that from April to September 2009, India was among the top 10 countries in the world with the largest number of illegal P2P activities and has the highest level of film piracy in any English-speaking countries and here Hindi films are the most widely available domestic Indian content with most downloaders in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai and Tamil films are mostly downloaded in Chennai and Bangalore, while Telugu films are targeted in Hyderabad and Bangalore. According to an Ernst and Young 2008 report on "The Effects of Counterfeiting and Piracy on India's Entertainment Industry", the Indian film industry lost $959 million and 571,896 jobs due to piracy.

So users what do you think, can illegal downloading on internet ever be stopped?

The numbers that the surveys have come up with underpin our constant refrain that the economic and social impact of online piracy is enormous and will have even greater long-term implications if not addressed. We need strong laws to support copyright, strong enforcement of those laws, stiff sentences for people who violate those laws, and most important, an understanding by ordinary citizen that buying pirated movies hurts the industry and makes it difficult for movie-makers to make new films

At least in Netherland, it is not illegal. May be equal in some other countries.

Why these are a tall made available on Net sites ? So long available, how may be stopped ?

In the begining of this Net-world, we were told that things on net will be available free. Now all the commerce on net has appeared. When B2B these may be a paid service - otherwise it should " legally be free ".

However, pirated movies etc are basically circulated thru pirated CDs, DVDs etc. which may be stopped by the Law Enforcing agencies. People awarness may also help. Again : may not these be made "Piracy-protected" ?

i couldn't have agreed with you anymore .piracy need sot be curbed but more than that the big issue needs so .....

just a thought to ponder over , what if we  share stuff with our neighbour  (with a good intention ) ,if yes then isn't this what people try to do on the net  (as it is a medium)??

what if  we have to choose between obeying a law which does not permit sharing of stuff with your neigbour and our moral ground of sharing it ,enjoying the fun which we had, and thus promoting the promise of the author( every1 has a rtheoric of taking the message to the people ) ???

doesn't open source sound to be a reasonable answer here given the fact that two different classes of people exist ,one which can afford and the other cannot and thus let harmony prevail among the two ??

Man has a problem of explaining his desires to let  his content/invention/ (silly novel)  rule over and hence the stigma , higher the price , the better the quality, higher the outreach .I would say more OPEN  the author ,more room for improvement, more choices for consumers ,more harmony in the planet !!

Thank you so much for this debate ,

Yes, it can be stopped by reducing the price of software. The software companies should change their sale strategy in India by selling more at reasonable price so that they will get decent profit.

I agree with Prathana. There should be strong laws for copyright materials. Also, the internet police should be more active and national government should make rules for paid downloading in case of any movie download. Government should also plan of, (If possible), to establish an internet government which directly deals with these kinds of cases. By establishing these laws, Iam sure illigal downloading can surely be stopped...

Doubtful that illegal downloads can be stopped. Guess some people prefer stuff that is FOC(free of charge). As to India trailing the US, Canada, UK is simply due to the low penetration of internet viz the population of India.

This cannot be completely stoped. to some time it can be resrticted, but as long as it is available on net people will have ways to crack the security and download things.

i think, prarthana, you have some problem with internet. Previous debate topic and also this one prove this. But it is fun to participate in your debate topic.Actually you are pointing only the negative aspects of internet.I can tell the thousands of advantages of internet. If it has so many advantages so its obvious that it would also have some disadvantages.Statistics given here has shown the loss of one person but many persons are getting profit either the providers or subscribers through internet. Those statistics are not given. If the movie is good then everyone will go and enjoy in theater but if it is bad then it is waste of money if we watch it in theater. So i will prefer internet to watch that movie online. Also India is second soon be in first position in population so i am not surprising by the numbers given in statistic.

People these days watch around a 100 movies per month and listen to around 10-15 albums a month which if purchased will be damn expensive. So when God has provided us with DL option for free...why not utilise it and save our hard earned money.I don't know whether it is shameful act or not but truth is, everyone does it and are amlost dependent on it.It is OK to say softwares should not be downloaded especially security programs but for the movies and music, people listen to songs on the internet before they actually want to buy it or not.
