Dear friends, it seems China and India can take a few steps beyond what the developed world expects them to do and then they can point the finger at developed countries and tell them that they are of the most poorest countries in the worls still they are taking initiatives and actions against pollution which developed countries aren't. The rest of the world is not going to be motivated to make emissions reductions until they see the US part of that arrangement.

While developing countries should not be expected to reduce emissions, they should agree to "deviate from business as usual. The global community should accept that because at this stage, the development of these countries cannot impose reductions or limitations on emissions.

China and India, among the world's biggest polluters, last week signed a five-year agreement to cooperate on climate change leading up to the summit. They have so far taken a united stand on rejecting binding emissions cuts, arguing that carbon caps will hinder their quest for economic development and poverty alleviation. Chinese President Hu Jintao told the United Nations last month that Beijing would reduce the carbon intensity of its economy by a "notable margin" by 2020 from their 2005 levels, but did not provide a figure whereas India has said it was ready to set non-binding targets for cutting carbon emissions in a bid to shed its image as an intransigent polluter.

Carbon intensity is the measure of greenhouse gas that is emitted per unit of economic activity.

Do you think by taking this initiative China and India can Shame the developed nations ?

I agree. With this initiative definitely China and India could use their growing clout to shame developed countries into committing to a climate change deal.

How can we so surely say western countries are not taking any initiative? They have banned smoke emitting vehicles long back and majority of them are running non-pollutant vehicles. Many factories badly spreading pollution have been closed. Emission of smoke beyond a certain limit is a crime there. We are "Planning" to do it now. And we still say they have not taken any initiative and we can become shame on them?

we should consider that the cabon emissions are not only from automobiles & industries. the AC component also plays vital role in that. It wasagreed to reduse the emissionns to 15% by the end of 2015 in the european emission control board. but still there is hunt for technology to reduse carbon emissions. many industries in europe have refused to change the refrigerant to CO2. CO2 canr eduse the carbon emission quite considerable. But industries are not willing to bring invest more money in modifying the the current refrigerant.

I agree that China and India are the big nations of the future provided they use their resources to their fullest extend

India and China can definitely do better than  the so called rich nations! As world's one third population live in these counties, more present in the global space and hence require more safe environment per unit space / land available. While these counties are developing still and not reached to the level of Developed nations like US, they have high potential. Today the developed nations are using only the professionals from these developing counties for their top scientific / technical firms.

Today India may be short of opportunities for such talented professionals, but sooner or later the same professionals will have business of their own with India as base and also get opportunities within the country. As of date, though the pollution norms are lower for developing counties like India, people are going for world class only such as Euro III for vehicles. Also, India is not polluting the world by depositing huge nuclear wastes in the others' territories and oceans. The so called developed nations are doing very hazardous pollution compared to even under developed nations of Africa / Asia.

It is not shame or pride for rich nations but a feel that India is more committed to global security and safety than any other nation.

It is a welcoming move that India and China have taken the lead. At the same time let us not use the work 'shame'; initiatives lead to success only when there are followers. If I am rite, India did not research and find out that the toxic-particulate is increasing at an unacceptable rate and would affect the globe. After all pollution requries no visa !  Not  just on this matter, let all countrires stop looking at the US as a benchmark,... it is drifting.

This is a direct answer to the western nations that they are not the only ones to take initiatives. We, the developing nations too can do that. That too in this big cause, we took before them. We have surely shamed them

mr.sreeram to be frank india & china are developing countries not developed countries. Do u know the electricity demand now is 1.27 LacMW, in 2020 it is predicted that it will be 2.54 lac MW. For that we have to increase the  power plants as double as what we laid since our independence. in this short term weather we will meet this demand?

Point over here is how far has the so, called intiative of what they have taken helped this evil effects of climatic changes in the environment.... Guys this is not a problem related to just a couple of nations.... This is Global and the intiatives have to come from the developed nations, as they have made their stands high on the world map... Talking does not help much as the clock is ticking too fast... This commitment made by India and china is something that the so, called developed nations have to be shamed off......

Bindu is right. They don't merely speak like us but they do silently. Care towards environment was there in their mind much back thus without declaring they directly did actions by implementing laws. God knows when will we implement our promises...
