India was set back by the fact that she did not tale part in World Cup qualifiers from 1950s till 80s... The govt refused to send team to Brazil WC of 1950 stating it as an unimp evet compared to olympics... all these events have set Indian Soccer back by many a generation

I agree with baalu. Where there is will there is way. By selecting passionate players, coach, giving required eninities and support, we can build a team. The will to make a good team by authorities can yeild results.

i agree with Disha and libin. india has done wonder in many sectors lately, like in technology, education, trade and industry. there is no reason we cannot qualify for FIFA, provided we do it with a planned effort.

India can qualify but provided that we improve the standards for this game in our Country. For my Friends who mentioned that there is less craze about football in India then I would suggest them to go to North Eastern India, Southern India and States like West Bengal, here football is more in demand compared to Cricket. Every football player who is playing for his country has first played for a Club to prove their potential. In India we don't have Clubs which can stand at the standards of International Clubs. I do not know how many Clubs are run by Government at International Level, if I am not wrong it is all Corporates with large investments who run this clubs. So, no need of talking politics over here. We need Corporates to support this game in India which can provide a better Infrastructure, Manager, Coach, Support Staff for the development of players. Once the standard of our Clubs in the country are improved, I do not see any hurdle to: our players making to Big International Clubs and India qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.

Hi, Disha, yes I agree with you we can make it to world cup provided we put in place a good team under the guidance of good coach, financially supported by the govt. & sponsorship by corporate sectors. We don't have dearth of talents, required to nurture & constant training of the team we can definitely achieve our goal & attract sport lovers & sponsors to popularise the game at domestic level as well. After all. as someone has quoted that"FOOTBALL TEACHES THE WAY OF LIFE. IT IS NOT IMPORTANT TO HIT HARD OR SLOW. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN CONTROL AND KNOW YOUR GOAL". S.N.Rao    Â

I think they can and I don't agree with Deepak here, and whatever names he has mentioned have done a good job for India, and few of them have played for International clubs and chettri is playing for a major club in US, and Baichung just missed by a whisker playing for a top English club, but I think India have the talent but the support staff like top coach and then getting more people into football than cricket is more important, I think Football is a far better game than cricket I don't know why Football is not picking up in India, but there should be some right strategy behind Indian football. Surely in 2 world cups time India should be able to qualify for it....May be in 2018 or 2022 India should be able to crack it guys......

Ya just hope for the best ... but India will never qualify if they have these kind of selector who asks Rs30000 for the selection process or get into the team. People don't have respect for the sports, all they care about is money. How they gonna make it. Soccer you cannot show must advertisement so u cannot earn more. India don't have proper soccer grounds. Bringing a foreign coach won't do anything when people don't have heart to play the game. Better players are never given chance. Or they r never paid well.So just sit and imagine that one day India will qualify.

For those who are not so optimistic please go through the following article India may not have qualified for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa, but they still managed to claim some hardware last week. India defeated Tanzania 1-0 to win the first ever Street Children World Cup, a tournament committed to spreading awareness about the problems facing street children all around the world. The nine-team tournament (India, Tanzania, South Africa, UK, Vietnam, Brazil, Nicaragua, Ukraine, Philippines) consisted of players aged 14-16 that have lived on the streets at one point or another in their lives. The tournament was a great chance for different cultures to come together in celebration of soccer, but also served as a global forum for the children to share their experiences and bring attention to their problems. By coming together in Durban, children living on the streets finally had a voice. As the tournament went on, it began gaining attention from icons in the soccer world, including David Beckham. With stories circulating about South Africa’s forced relocation of the homeless populations of World Cup cities, this tournament came at a perfect time for homeless children to have their voice heard. The event was organized by Umthombo, an organizati on run by former South African street children, with the support of the Durban University of Technology. Plans are in the works for this tournament to be staged in Brazil before the start of the 2014 World Cup. Â

Nothing is impossible. India may one day host the FIFA World Cup if they work towards achieving that dream. For those who think that it would never happen, rethink again. Ten(10) years ago we here in the West Indies/Caribbean(I am from Guyana which is in South America but we are closely affiliated with the Caribbean) never dream that we would host World Cup cricket and it came on us so sudden that we could not believe it was happening. I for one had said it would never happen in a million years.

Thanks for the referral Ms Disha I personally think that all big things are achieved by dreaming small. We Indians have shown the world that we are not lagging behind in anything. Be it in the field of Sports, Entertainment, Business or anything else. All it needs is determination. Agreed that Cricket is the most loved game in India, but with proper boost to football it can be given new dimensions. There are schools which are promoting this sport and youngsters are actively taking part in this. Government should take initiative to popularize this sport, so that the people come for it more in numbers.

Yes, why not? This is just a mentality of our indian sports ministry who only supports Cricket. If the same priorities given to the Soccer, Hockey in our nation then we can do wonders there also. In India we only like to talk about cricket and nothing else apart from it. This is only the reason why, in Sports, India only known for Cricket not for the other games. We have done a tremendous job in almost all area whether it's related to the Technology, Reasearch, Development, Automobile etc.. Only Infrastructure and Sports are the two areas where we still need improvements.

Thanks for the referral Ms.Disha Roy. You have well said. In India cricket has more importance than other games. The sports authority in India should take initiative to give priority & importance for other games like foot-ball etc, without any petty politics in selection and other procedures. Merits of candidates should rule in games.

In India we have good talent but due to politics within the group even at grass root levels some talented players are not coming to limelight. Only who are able to fund themselves and can initiate some influence on the selectors are selected and playing games for clubs, state or country. And the money spent on sports other than cricket is very minimal and the govt is just fiddling with the players. The money alloted as for these sports is also utilised by the association heads and other team members. Why politicians should head or become a member of the sports association when they doesnt even know how the game is played. Only eminent sports persons who played for india or statelevel must be made members of the core committe.

I DON'T FEEL ANY REASON WHY INDIA CAN NOT QUALIFY FOR THE FIFA WORLD CUP.THERE IS NO LACK OF TALENT IN OUR COUNTRY,ONLY THING I FEEL WE ARE MISSING IS WILL & PROPER FOCUS.SEE WHAT WAS THE POSITION OF INDIA WHEN WE STARTED PLAYING CRICKET & EVENTUALY WE WON THE WORLD CUP.SIMILARY WHERE WERE WE IN HOCKEY & WHERE WE ARE NOW A DAYS. ONLY THING I WOULD SAY IS IMPORTANT IS PROPER FOCUS & ADAPTABILITY WITH RESPECT TO PRESENT SITUATIONS.

SO far i have not seen any school/collage/club level football matches are being played in Gujarat in a regular basis.Of course in many schools student plays football by kicking ball in their own direction with out forming a team. The same scenario for other state also.Only few state knows about football game and they used to sing a song of football as if they are the masters. Before and after Independence not a single prestigious world level tournament is being played on Indian soil. By discussing/dreaming one can not become player of the game.It requires a sincere thought/effort right from school level to play and make football as a familiar game.Such possibilities are not seen so far.

As per my opinion is concerned, I think INDIA can never qualify FIFA World Cup because no appropriate interest is given to it. In INDIA where there are more likelihood of money involved there is everything, there is only promotion of cricket & cricket as lots of money is involved in it. Let’s take the case of HOCKEY; I think its losing its existence day by day even if it is our national game. LET’S ONLY HOPE FOR THE BEST.

No history may not repeatr itself here unless we make following efforts 1) Proper coaching camps for football 2) Banning cricket in India for 40 years 3) Proper trasnparent method of rewarding contrcts to players 4) Only best talent taken in 5) Bringin palyers like Kaka, Ronaldo, Rolandino , Messi for training - this requires loads of money here politicians can bring the swiss account to us aslong with people like MAllya and Lalit Modi 6) Having good proper play grounds  7) Many pratice matches with Brazil. Germany, Italy , France 8) Ensuring the players are paid right and good amount 9) Most important - player ,. mgmt and entire process must be with aim to promote India as football country and with love for Indai and for football Â
