Electricity losses in India during transmission and distribution are extremely high and vary between 30 to 45%. In 2004-05, electricity demand outstripped supply by 7-11%. Due to shortage of electricity, power cuts are common throughout India and this has adversely effected the country's economic growth.

Theft of electricity, common in most parts of urban India, amounts to 1.5% of India's GDP. Despite an ambitious rural electrification program, some 400 million Indians lose electricity access during blackouts. While 80 percent of Indian villages have at least an electricity line, just 44 percent of rural households have access to electricity.

So, can India ever have 24/7 uninterrupted power service all round the year?

India cannot have  power  24/7 if it follows the old ways of generation, transmission & distribution. The need for the uninterrupted power can only be fulfilled, if the building creates its own power & decreases its dependability on power suppliers. A nice example of this is the Bahrain Trade Centre, But for this to be possible Indians should have faith in, the ideas of Architects & Engineers. By constructing these type of buildings we can reduce the power load, thereby exerting less load on our present grid.

Also the need for intellegent buildings is the demand of the future. Such as censors control the lighting and other electrical equipment such that, the light can regulate itself according to the surroundings and the heating & cooling can also regulate according to the optimum temperature needed........

Therefore, to have an Intellegent future we have to Think Intellegently...

The theft is one of the reasons for loss of revenues. But controlling the theft may not reduce the gap between generation and demand appreciably. Hence  India should go for power generation in a massive scale.  Private players should be brought in  not only in areas of generation and trading. But also in transmission and destribution also. The govenment owner ship of Transmission and destribution companies is also a reason for the theft and energy losses. Many times the engineers and staff of government power companies and  electricity boards are in collution with power thieves as they too geta share in the bounty.

We are hoping soooo.. One day that time will come when we get 24/7 Electricity in our homes.. Because Power department of India is investing much more............

Its a very serious issue because not only for our development but in our day to day life we are hugely dependent on power & apart from all odds if proper planning extra efforts towards more generation of thermal power & enough consideration to use of solar power is given gaining 24/7 uninterrupted power is definitely possible.

Actually the Electrical Power started at hundred years back in India first time in Asia continent. Using abundant water resource by construction Dams againast main stream of water.

The deeper dams constucted at elevated area, highrer dams at low laying area, such way that the more water column is required for kinetic enegy. By enhancing the water management we can generate more power.

Any how water and wind are regerated naturally we have to utilised it. Similary wind energy also like that. Both hydal and wind Projects boost the envionment.

So on priority basis we have to handle the huge project in all engineering aspect have to complete it. Once for all as totally called as a System Engineering.

Let us not wait a single day now onward.

Yes India can have 24\7 power service all year especially it is possible in small villages  if there is some will to do it from locals & government.Power can be generated in the village itself by implementing some hydro project which will also be helpful in providing employment to the natives. As the situation is in some villages there is lots of rainfalll but due to lack of systematic collection of water there is drought like situation after monsoon. So by proper planning & implementation it is possible . In case of villages where there is lack of rainfall alternate methods can be used for power generation. But all this is not possible without help of natives  & government. There is lots of wastage due to power thefts if this can be sorted out by devicing measures to detect power theft  &  hefty fine to these theives something can be done. But all these things will take time & proper implementation.AS they say if there is a will there is  a way.

We can have 24/7 power supply throughout India if we put in some important measures into our power management system. It can be noticed that we loose a lot of power when our street lights are switched on long before sunset and sometimes even runs through the afternoon. If we replace this manual switching devices by automatic timers which automatically switches on/off at the stipulated time then we can save a lot of energy.  Also we are not using the abundance of natural energy sources available in India such as sunlight, wind and water energy.  We have a lot of dams but there is no proper control on them.  Hence we require proper management of our renewable energy sources.  When it comes to nuclear energy, we have not yet ventured fully into it.  India can acheive 24/7 power supply and this will be possible within a few years as we are growing at a fast scale compared to other nations of the world.

hello shikha,

Now the thing is every one is saying about harnessing renewable technologies for the surplus requirement of energy. But looking at the pace of development it doesnt seem true for atleast next 25 years. You are telling that our T & D losses are also very high and yes its a fact. Alongwith this, there is frequent theft problems, blackouts, approach network to remote places and many more. Then what is the guranttee that this all things will not effect on the energy supply after getting back-up from Renewable energy resources.

So, for now the best option is to first upgrade our existing grid system and convert our grid sytem into smart grid system as soon as possible. Also, the Decentralised generation for remote places can result in better option for providing electricity and not giving extra load on grid system. There are as much as 18000 villages in India which are remote and connecting them with grid system would result in a costly affair. So, these can be provided with Decentralised energy systems using renewable energy sources available at that place thus also reducing transportation cost required for providing fuel for decentralised system.

Renewable energies cant replace our present conventional power station as the amount of electricity required is to high but we can get a substitute or back-up support for grid system using renewable energies. This will also help in making our proposed smart grid system more efficient.

So, the answer is we can achieve the 24X7 electricity goal but will have to go steadily and in more sustainable manner so that it will not boomerang us again and will help in our round-the-clock energy requirement.

India is still on its path towards development. New techniques have been implemented for power generation. It is expected that renewable sources of energy will gain importance in near future. So, it can be expected that India will have power supply for 24/7 all round the year.

As S.V.Swamy suggested an " Investment " as a massive need. Is there any importance of emphasizing activity of ground level of our System?

with this level of corruption and power thefts it is difficult, uncontrlled incrase of demand due to uncontrolled population is adding to this problem.

24/7 uninterrupted power supply is not possible all through the year. The power supply as we know is often associated with a lot of problems. Like the very basic among the troubles is the unpredictable weather. natural calamaties can hardly be prevented. moreover any machine is not 100% efficent and their performance gradually decrease by time. The system has to be shut down for maintains at any stage as per the requirements. so there are a lot of chances of any major supply failure.

I would like to drag your attention at CSEB. The Chattisgarh state electricity board is going through a loss of about 670 crores. One of the reason behind this was frequent theft. this problem requires a lot of mandatory measures to overcome. And further study of power system new technologies that has been introduced in the developed countries can easily prove that uninterrupted power supply is a bit impossible.

No,India can never have 24/7 power supply if it follows the old tradition of power supply & power generation. The govt. should look for alternatives like renewable sources for power generation. Further new technologies should be applied to see that there is no power loss while transmission of electricity from one place to another.

Till date there are places where people don't have electricity even though they have paid for it. And political parties are taking advantage of the ignorance of people and eating the money alloted by the govt. for electrification programs.

So, I don't think India can ever have 24/7 electricity supply.

We cannot live with power cuts though there is a lot we need to do. Nuclear power is the answer and till when we do not develop an alternative to this we just cannot help it.
After what happend to Japan we all have started talking about all this. Who was concerned before that? Anyways we should go forward with our plans with a quality recheck but rethinking on the whole project, i.e., to so or not to is not possible.
