Telecom market in India crossed over 200 million phone subscribers mark, precisely 264.77 million telephone subscribers. Further, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) stated that India's wireless market is fastest growing in the world. The total number of wireless subscribers was 250.93 million at the end of February 2008, compared with 260.5 million in USA and 550.5 million in China.

Does India has caught up with China’s growth rate, but the number of fixed lines and wireless users are less than that of China with a considerable gap.

How can we surpass them, China is so far ahead of India...

India will not only catch up but beat China Telecom sector as India is fastest growing in telecommunications years on year. Our Stats says that we will definitely reach the pinnacle and lead from front. One survey results that India's further growth is major in Telecom and Insurance Sectors by leaving all the countries behind.

Not with current regulator. Besides, to those who actually read the specs, it is not the fastest technology that matters, but the basic one that is sold to the masses that really matters. Even the fastest technology becomes basic when outside the zones of coverage, and RIGHT THERE is where your regulator failed.

Other countries have country-wide 3G networks, so don't blame the telecoms. They are the good guys here. Regulator isn't.

India is growing economy and well accepted fact by the economists world over. Telecom/Mobile companies are investing huge amounts apart from players within India. Surveys and stats. indicate tremendous sectoral growth..hence, India not only catch but out beat China.

A Positive outlook and frame of mind helps us to achieve everything in life the way we expect it...in other words..definitely Indian Telecom would surely catch up or even cross out China...I guess if am not wrong, more than half of Australia has Indians...this itself implies that we are in no way behind any one...the only thing required is focussed attention & commitment...India ranks almost equal with China on terms of population criteria...Most of the people in China are focussed on productivity along with survival, also they are capable and versatile to any type of working conditions...Indian telecom would surely catch up with China and overthrow them, but what needs to be assessed here is...is it really required..?

Sure Greshma we will surely beat China in numbers be it population or telecom users.

Yet all equipments in use will be made in china............which means this increased base would be benefiting chinese-economy.

So while we spend ......chinese earn.

Remember one thing that today whole world is concentrating on Indian mobile market. From top billionaires to even a owner of medium sized industry everyone wnts to invest in our countrys mobile buisness. But TRAI has to put clear view of the policies and provide attractive incentives like income tax holiday for initial years of investment. Take the case of unitech which is all set with foreigners to dominate and challenge others. A higher class secondary school student to senior citizens they may forget anything to carry but never forget to have a mobile in hand irrespective of their income, status,. etc .... mobile is like a magnet sticking to everyone.

Yes, we can overtake them. It is not a big deal. Only thing required is proper polices and forced implementation of the same. TRAI should be made more powerful.

Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE have now gained a 15 per cent share in the Indian telecom market as their equipment is priced 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than their Western rivals Ericsson, Alcatel- Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks. They’re winning contracts with Indian Telcos like Tata and Reliance.

Its difficult................

Good that U did not want 2catch up with (like) the USA and European Countries.

As an optimist, me too like to catch up with China ... in (say) 5 yrs. Even does not matter if we remain just below China in Telecom Growth .. ( .. theirs is 550.0 milo  right now in China though   ... )

One News Item was doing its rounds recently :

India has more mobile phones than "toilets" in house-holds. Any comment ?

We cannot because faulty policies framed by the Indian government, right from the Independence till the New Telecom Policy was formulated in 1999. In fact if I am not wrong till 1990, we were ahead.
